took at trip to Denton, Texas (college town north of Dallas)this weekend and noticed that Cinemark is building a new theatre along Interstate 35. The location is only 6 miles north of the RaveMotionPictures 16. I'm surprised that Cinemark would build a theatre so closed to a three year old established theatre that does things equally if not better than most new Cinemark Theatres.

The signage says opening fall 2004 but I'm not sure if that's possible because they've just erected the outer frame. Oddly, Cinemark website never made mention in their Press Release section of the construction of this new theatre as they did when the announced new theatres in Sherman, Texas and Cedar Hill, Texas over 2 years ago. Maybe they wanted quietly enter into RaveMotionPictures territory. Also, it was announced earlier this year that one of those new urban developments with apartments and restaurants was announced for Denton and it was to include a Premiere Cinemas 12 screen.

Denton is a growing town and has the University of North Texas but I don't know if it's big enough for that many theatres in such close proximity.

Denton, by itself, is not quite big enough to support all those screens (yet). However, Denton is hardly by itself in that neck of the woods. The Dallas-Fort Worth megapolis is growing north and northwest. Size of population in other established cities like Garland and Richardson is rivaling that of Fort Worth. What are they going to call the metroplex in a few years? Dallas-Garland-Carollton-Irving-Grand Prairie-Richardson-Fort Worth?

Lots of people are building houses and whole developments in unincorporated areas around the northern reaches of DFW. Communities like Sherman, McKinney, Decatur and more will quickly grow. If the development keeps going, I-35 from Dallas will be urban/suburbanized all the way to Lake Texoma.

So in short, I guess all those theaters are just trying to get in there in advance of the growth, before real estate prices get too expensive.

That theatre is slated to open in December 2004. Once they get the roof on the building things start happening pretty quickly. 6 miles from another competitor is not a bad distance. They will play the same movies and not be in direct competition with each other. Basically convenience will win out as to who goes where. Being near an interstate is a plus.

Well we sort of call it "The Golden Triangle" if you count Denton as the 3rd point. We even have a mall here called by that name, which is where I originally worked as manager/projectionist for a UA there.

That shouldn't be too hard to do. Especially if you are in the same reagions. That way the same Reagion Leader would know what is going on. As far as setting up the payroll it is not very hard at all. Even better now since you either have Direct deposit or a pay card. No worry about what theater your pay check goes to.

They only thing constructed thus far is the outer stone walls. The roof hasn't even been put up yet. The parking lot is finished. I agree with you that it will probably be similar in design to the Sherman Cinemark that opened last December.

The new Cinemark in Cedar Hill, Texas is scheduled to open Oct. 22nd. Kinda a odd date, I figured they would have opened Nov. 5th to cash in on The Incredibles opening up.

After reading the following story in the Fort Worth Startelegram regarding a new Cinemark in Mansfield. The article mentions future Cinemark locations including Allen, Texas. The Cinemark Legacy 24 is at the outskirts of Plano/Allen boarder. Where else in Allen can Cinemark build a 12 screen theatre without eating into Cinemark Legacy's revenue?

Officials break ground on theater

MANSFIELD - City and business leaders on Tuesday celebrated Mansfield's long-awaited movie theater, which could be another economic catalyst in this fast-growing area.

Officials ceremonially broke ground Tuesday on the 12-screen Cinemark theater, which is expected to open on Memorial Day next year and will be the centerpiece of a planned 200,000-square-foot commercial-retail complex at U.S. 287 and Farm Road 157.

Officials hope residents in Mansfield and surrounding communities will spend more entertainment dollars in Mansfield, which hasn't had a movie house since Farr Best Theater closed in 1975.

"With everything that has come in the last couple of years, this says Mansfield is a city now, a quality city," Mayor Mel Neuman said. "It's not just a suburb."

The city is in the midst of a construction frenzy along U.S. 287 that has brought several restaurants and major retailers -- Home Depot, Lowe's, Target and Tom Thumb among them -- since 2000. A deal has also been finalized for a 40-acre Big League Dreams baseball complex at U.S. 287 and East Broad Street, and construction on a $100 million hospital is set to begin in June, just east of the baseball complex site.

Site work actually began two months ago for the $4 million theater, which will have 2,100 stadium seats and is the first phase of the retail complex.

Although no lease agreements with major tenants have been announced, deals have been finalized for an On The Border restaurant and a Cold Stone Creamery ice cream parlor at the 35-acre site. Officials said they are nearing an agreement with Applebee's restaurant.

City officials credit much of the recent commercial development to a population growth spurt over the past four years, from 30,000 residents to about 50,000.

Kossman Development Co. of Pittsburgh, which is building the theater and shopping center, said its venture would be too risky without the $1 million tax incentive that the city granted. The tax breaks will lower the construction costs, which will allow Kossman to offer lower-cost leases.

"Without this incentive that we have, a lot of retailers were passing us by," said Marc Kossman, director of company operations.

Cinemark, which specializes in mid-size theater markets, also plans to open theaters in Cedar Hill, Denton, Rockwall and Allen, said Frank Gonzales, a marketing manager at Cinemark's corporate headquarters in Plano.

City Councilman Jeff Newberry, who has fond memories of watching movies as a youngster at Farr Best, said he will be a regular customer of the Cinemark.

"I'm excited, because I don't like driving to Arlington," Newberry said. "Honestly, I can't tell you the last time I saw a movie."

ALLEN?? Thats a surprise to me! The only way I can see that working out well is if McKinney Movies 14 becomes a discount and Allen gets one of the new 12's or 14's, but still.. Legacy would we awfully close. Is Allen really that big yet? Hmmmm...

I agree, Allen is VERY close to Legacy (5-10 min.), and I'm not sure I see any marginal revenue outweighing the costs. The reason McKinney Movies 14 gets the business it does in such close proximity to Legacy is because of the lower price. Isn't a new theater going to have charge more at the box office, thereby eliminating the incentive to skip Legacy and drive a little farther north? Quite frankly, I'm not understanding Cinemark's recent building strategy- turning 10 year old theaters into dollar theaters and building a new theater down the block of comparable size. That's not really growth... or maybe I'm missing something?

Maybe I'm just partial, I'm not really comfortable with my home theater become a second run [Roll Eyes]

Just heard that Michael Rollins will be opening that theatre. He will be on-site on 11/19. I don't think they will be able to open until early next year.

I think I remember hearing that Troy Downing(gm of Mckinney Movies 14) threw his hat in the ring for the sherman theatre (yes a step down but alot closer to home). Anyone hear if he is looking into changing theaters?

i saw Cedar Hill tonight (which is supposedly identical to Denton) very nice theatre, many improvements have been made to the Sherman design. The exterior is quite nice, one of the nicer theatres in Cinemark! I recommend anyone stop by and visit Cedar Hill if they get a chance. (and purchase a large popcorn and drink of course!) Still no word on who's getting "The Sherman"?

Actually the question has been raised many times as to the actual name of the Sherman theatre (the 12) The website says Cinemark Sherman, Frank Gonzales once said it was Cinemark Town Center, some of the staff call it Movies 12. Makes me wonder what they'll call Denton.

i'm guessing that was some sort of mix up, a theatre in allen is just plain overkill, plus cinemark has yet to give a press release to say they have plans too.

Cinemark’s Tinseltown Theatre in Houston to Re-Open Tonight After Being Declared Snake Free

Cinemark’s Tinseltown Theatre, located at 12920 Northwest Freeway, will re-open at approximately 7:00 pm this evening, Friday, October 1 after having been closed since early afternoon on Wednesday, September 22. The theatre was closed due to a reported sighting of a 7 to 8 foot long, yellow-colored snake by a janitor during a regularly scheduled cleaning around 4:00 am on September 22.

Cinemark asked Texas Snakes & More, a company which specializes in snake removal, to conduct a thorough investigation to determine if a snake was in the building and if so, to remove it. During the nearly 10 days that the theatre was closed, snake indicators left throughout the theatre, particularly in the auditorium where the snake was seen, revealed no snake movement. No snake skin nor fecal matter was found and the dust under the screen and in the nooks and crannies of the auditorium where the sighting took place was undisturbed. Clint Pustejovsky, owner of Texas Snakes & More, spent over 30 hours in a comprehensive search of the entire theatre and has found no snake nor any evidence of a snake.

With this assurance, Cinemark will re-open its doors this evening.

New films opening today are Shark Tale, Ladder 49 and Woman Thou Art Loosed. Also opening for the first time in this theatre are: First Daughter and The Forgotten. Other films showing at Tinseltown are: Princess Diaries 2; Hero; Cellular; Resident Evil; Mr. 3000; Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow; Wimbledon; First Daughter and The Forgotten.

Ben, it's someone from the Cinemark in Lancaster, I believe.

From what I have just heard, it is Kinotron heads, MIT Lamphouses. MIT soundrack with CP-650's. JPL speakers with a couple of aud's with Kliptschz (sp?). More as either the booth manager posts or let's me know.

Went to size up the competition tonight, its going to be a heated battle: Cinemark vs Rave. The Rave theatre actually reminds me a lot of the old Cinemark decor. Their building looks awfully small to be a 16 screen I noticed, but perhaps it was the odd layout. Not sure if I like the idea of putting the arcade in the lobby, lots of screaming kids everywhere.

I saw on the Cinemark website that the theatre opens January 28th. I would have assumed they would have tried to push the opening for MLK Weekend because there are at least 4 big releases that weekend.

I've been to the Rave Hickory Creek several times and I personally like the longer legroom between rows and the wider seats. The sound system isn't too shabby either with DTS and DD in all of their auditoriums.

It will be an interesting battle between Rave and Cinemark. Good thing is that the customer will hopefully win in this upcoming battle.

Does anyone know if the two theatres will compete for bookings? I hope not. I hate it that Cinemark's Hollywood Theatre and UA Galaxy in Garland, Tx compete for bookings. Of the two theatres I prefer the Galaxy so it's a disappointment when a good movie goes to the Cinemark Hollywood instead of the Galaxy.

The today's Dallas Morning News has an article about retail development in Allen. The article talks about Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones new development called Star Creek at 121 in Allen located at HWY 121 and Stacy Road. This development is reported to be 500 acres and to include single family homes and a retail and entertainment district which the article says a movie theatre is planned for this site. I believe this is where Cinemark will build their rumored new theatre in Allen, Texas this year.

If the Cinemark and Rave builds are not within 2 to 3 miles of each other they may be able to play the same movie at either site. When two locations get too close to each other that nasty allocation process bumps into effect.

The only place I've seen where movie theaters within blocks of each other can play the same film is Manhattan. There may be areas in other very large cities where the same thing holds true (mainly where much of the customer traffic is on foot). Here in the middle of the country where most people travel by car, that allocation process can be a real pain.
