Just to let anyone interested know, City Screen York (UK) are holding
'A celebration of the wide film format- The 70mm Experience'

You've got less of an excuse than Greg. Jet 2 do cheap flights from Geneva (pretty close to Villeurbanne if my brain hasn't crashed) to Leeds/Bradford Airport, which is only 30 miles from York. Despite there being Yorkshire terriers, Yorkshire humans (by and large) don't bite!

So Greg lays out £25 to get to the airport, $600 for an air fare and $200 in accomadation, plus buys the movie ticket and takes a week off to do so. And you buy him a £3 beer ? Sounds like a fair trade to me - sounds like you are following company financial policy - Ms G would think be proud of you !

Btw. Denmark now only has 2½ cinemas left capable of showing 70mm films for 5.387.174 people. Isn´t it terrible? I have to go and live somewhere else - oh, wait a minute, I do that every year during Wide Screen Weekend [Cool]

Even the Danish Film Museum, may it rest in peace [sleep]

, is not interested in 70mm [Mad]

(except a few gentlemen in the library and the projectionists [beer]

). They don´t even have 70mm screenings facilities! [uhoh]

What kind of museum/Cinematek is that? [thumbsdown]

Only silent b/w, Carl Th. Dreyer and Asta Nielsen movies and Dogma 95 videos [dlp]

has their interest. Anything wider than 35mm is not considered interesting. A typical amateurish Danish - non recommendable - approach. [puke]

I recommend everyone of FilmTech.com write them an e-mail at dfi@dfi.dk asking for 70mm facilities.

Ill do everything I possibly can to help promote the 70mm film format, as you do too.

Lets hope the rumors of the new 65mm production are totally true and this time next year many of us have a 70mm dts print in out premier theatres, run by people who care about film and will ensure a 70mm print is screened with the up most pride just like when films such as Lawrence of Arabia were released in the past.

www.fproj.com . You may find a bargain and be able to screen the 70mm premier format in your cinema!

Thomas - picketing the Danske Filmmuseum probably won't do much good. They've probably all been admitted to a psychiatric hospital after watching too many Dreyer films. That is if they haven't slit their wrists.

I emailed the danish film museum and got a reply back from the director of the museum.
He said it ws down to the expence and not having money to install 70mm when the cinemas were built, also said they didnt have enough room in the projection room!

Any excuse on the space issue. Our York cinema has very little room behind the projectors but perfectly safe to operate the gear with in Health and Saftey guide lines.

A 35/70 platter is the same size, projectors are of similar sizes, the Cinemeccanica Vic 8 is probably one of the most compact projectors. DP70's and DP75's are a litle bigger.

So really the Danish museum would instsall it if they were to get a projector very cheaply?

F... The Danish Filmmuseum. Who ruined one of the last existing 70mm prints of Kurosawas beauty DERSU UZALA by using a WET chamber under the ceiling as store ?? Who send all their 70mm prints to Norway ? - hope they been taken better care of up there... No respect for the art of arts !

What is it with Mo i Rana (the Norwegian film archive)? Some pushy wanker from there rang me up about two years ago offering a commercial nitrate storage service. He did a real hard sell on how dangerous nitrate was, that they were professionals who could look after it for us, blah blah blah. I very politely explained that we have perfectly good nitrate storage facilities ourselves, which meet FIAF and SMPTE guidelines for temperature and humidity and which are approved by the local fire brigade; but he kept going on and said that he would call back later 'after I'd had time to talk about it'. He did exactly that - in fact he was 'phoning us constantly for about a month until I eventually had to tell him in rather firm language that we weren't interested.

If I had to hazard a guess as to what's going on, it would be that they had built much bigger vault facilities than they needed and were trying to make some money back by offering storage facilities to other archives. But shipping preservation master elements hundreds of miles when you don't need to is something no responsible archivist would do (let alone the safety risks of moving nitrate). I was astonished that this guy seemed to be touting for business all over Europe. Presumably he did his hard sell stunt to the Danish Film Museum and they bit.

Here here - a great result for Darren, Joanna, Bill, Charlie, Nelson and anyone I've accidentally left out!

I'm sure that the York 70mm weekend will grow from such a great start to be a regular feature in the calendar, alongide Bradford's Widescreen Weekend and Nottingham's British Silent Film Weekend.
