Hello all. Just had a quick question. I've recently relocated to the smog ridden metropolis of Los Angeles by way of Detroit. I'm looking to get back into the theater biz, perferably management but projection as well since I managed both. I don't know quite what the deal is here though. I know unions for projections are dying off but knew LA still was going pretty strong.

Anyone have any info regarding this? If so, what does it take to join? Can non-union join?

Local 150 is hanging in there--they have a few theatres under contract for operators and/or service work. Mostly limited to the big first-run and premiere screens in Hollywood, Westwood, and West Los Angeles. Plus they have several AV companies under contract providing industrial and trade show projection services in some hotels and convention centers.

Studio projectionists working under the Hollywood Basic Agreement are now covered under Local 695 after the consolidation from a few years ago.

Don't know if they're taking sign-ups right now or not. Usually they aren't. Sometimes things get busy (like during vacation periods) and there might be some action on the extra boards. It really helps to know someone though, or already be an IA member from another local. The LA market is a tough nut to crack.

Is that a typo? Are you saying Los Angeles IS NOT part of SoCal? [uhoh]

Local 150 has lost many jobs over the last 7 years. Because of theatres going limited service and mergers of companies (GCC/AMC), older theatres closing, loss of the Drive-In. This is the only time you will make more money working in management than as a Union Projectionist in a theatre. During the last years that Local 150 had contracts with most of the major chains. There were many jobs to work and the extra board.
The last year that Local 150 had a good job to people ratio was back in 1996-97. Local 150 is just hanging on by a tread these day's.
