So this afternoon I walked into my theatre's men's room and noticed a slightly vinegary smell. Definitely not urine, but something else. Some obnoxious little s**t had put two ketchup packets under one of the toilet seats. There was ketchup splattered everywhere. On the floor, on the walls of the stall, on the door of the stall, and most likely on some yet to be identified customers pants. Maybe this one has been around for a while, but I'd never seen it before. Fortunately, it wasn't that hard to clean up. Just some Windex and a few paper towels, but I gloved up anyway. On the one hand, at least it wasn't graffiti or physical damage to the restroom. But it was still obnoxious.

We had someone urinate on the ceiling once. Yes, the ceiling. I'm not quite sure how they pulled that off.

Oh man, that's brilliant. I wish I'd thought of that in school.
I remember a kid in my elementary school collecting a bunch of ketchup packets, stacking them carefully, waiting for a victim, then slamming his foot down as his victim passed, sending a huge mess of ketchup at their leg. Trouble was the packets...all of them...burst open in the opposite direction, covering HIS other leg in ketchup.
Everybody laughed at him AND he got detention.

People at my old theater used to unscrew the coupling at the bottom of the flush valves on the urinals. When some unsuspecting guy came in to take a leak and flushed, he'd get all wet!
We finally put LocTite or something on the threads so they couldn't be unscrewed without tools.
Posted by Chris Slycord (Member # 4239) on 05-13-2007, 04:13 AM:
That's nothing.
I've had to glove up due to someone taking a dump in the urinal.
Once, one of the other supervisors cleaned up where someone (or possibly a dog, though I doubt it) did the same... this time in the carpet of our video game room.

Ha! I can beat that!
Have you ever seen a cloth roll towel cabinet?

Instead of paper towels, it uses a long roll of cloth towels that rolls up again when you pull down for the next section.
Years ago, we had one of these in the men's room of my parent's bar. It was my job to change the roll when it was used up.
So, one day, I go into the men's room to check the towel dispenser and I find that the toilet paper had run out so some idiot decided to get up and wipe his ass on the roll towel!
Let's put the hygene issue aside for a minute. HOW did some guy get his ass up THAT HIGH to wipe shit all over the towel?!
It's a mystery that remains unsolved to this day!

They're not as common as they used to be, but we still have those towel cabinets over here.
There seems to be something hanging down behind the one in your photo through which the used towel passes on its way back into the cabinet; could that be to somehow prevent something that happened here many years ago? I was still at school at the time, and all of the cabinets at my school, and I think at all the schools in London were moved to a lower position on the wall. The reason for this was that a child at a primary school elsewhere in the Country had stood on something, put his head through the loop of towel, jumped off and spun around, with fatal results.
There are other problems with these things; the towel runs out, leaving the tail end of it to get used repeatedly, and it thus gets soaking wet. the towel never seems to take up at the same rate as it feeds out, so the loop either gets too short to use, or so long that it falls on the floor. The supply of clean towels sometimes runs out, so that the old one has to be turned round and used again. Then, of course, there are the rental and laundry costs; you can't exactly wash these things yourself in the sink!
Compare this with paper towels which generate lots of waste and mess, and also run out, and hot air dryers which draw a lot of power, and never seem to be very reliable.
Any inventors here who can come up with a better hand drying system? It's something that's certainly needed.

Properly maintained, they are better than paper. No cleanup. No trash cans and they get your hands drier than paper.
The loop will stay the same size if you thread them right. We ALL know how to thread things correctly... RIGHT?
If the loop is maintained at the correct length, there will be no danger of strangling. And, if you check your restrooms for cleanliness often, there's no problem with them running out and getting all messy.
Heck! If my Dad could teach a ten year old kid to take care of a restroom, I don't think it would be too hard for any other employee!

I think I agree; towel to take off most of the water and a hand dryer to finish off works quite well.

I would say that the vast majority do not keep a constant loop size; whether this is due to poor design, poor maintenance abuse by users or something else, I cannot say; I'm not an expert on them.

How things should be, and how they are, are often two very different things. The ones that were in my school were pretty old, probably early '50s.
As far as I know the fatal accident only ever happened once, but that was enough for the education authority at the time, the ILEA, to mount all towel cabintes so low that most users had to bend down to use them.
In the real world, I still see significant problems with all hand-drying methods.

First, put the projectors in the restrooms. Next, cut holes in the lamp house. Now you've got a dual-purpose projector/hand dryer.
Plus, you get an added antimicrobial effect if you don't use OFR bulbs.

Wow....I don't want to sound insensitive, but what did this kid have, some kind of suicide wish? Or perhaps this was just natural selection weeding out really stupid genes. So the next thing the authorities do is scramble to lower ALL the hand towel dispensers down near the floor all over the country so that everyone has to bend down to dry their hands? Seems like that natural selection thing wasn't able to weed out enough of the stupid genes that had evidently worked their way into the staff at the regulatory department.

There's a rubber pinch roller that the fresh towel goes through as the user pulls the cloth. Those rollers drive the takeup roller that winds up the used cloth. If you don't thread the takeup correctly, it won't wind up the right amount. At first, it won't wind up enough then, as the roll of soiled cloth gets bigger than the supply roll, it will start pulling in too much.
My Dad taught me how to thread the machine ONCE. From then on, I had to do it myself. If I did it wrong, I got my ass beat... LITERALLY!
I don't think that kids should get their asses beat for making minor mistakes but I do think that too few kids are being held accountable for things they do wrong.

It's a long time ago now, probably around 1971-2, but the fatal accident was real, I remember reading about it in the news, so it must have made the national press as it didn't happen locally. As far as I can remember, very soon after it happened the ILEA (Inner London Education Authority), which no longer exists, issued instructions to their schoolkeepers and cleaners that the loop of towel had to be under a certain maximum length, i.e. too short to get a head through, and very difficult to dry hands on as it was almost touching the bottom of the cabinet, and that any cabinet which failed to keep this length was to be taken out of use. This was a temporary measure until the cabinets could be lowered to such a height that the feet of a school-age child would be on the floor if they did manage to put their head through the loop. Some school buildings changed in use over the years, e.g. from a secondary school to an infants one, and nobody tended to bother about mounting the things a a suitable height for the users; people tended not to consider the needs of children when these things were installed, in much the same way that few people considered the needs of wheelchair users until quite recent times. They tended to be mounted at typical adult height, and it was quite common for younger children to have to stand on something to reach the towel. It certainly happened in my school, which was unusual in being all-age from 6-18. This may be how the accident happened; I don't know.
I've never heard of any similar accident, and the chances of it happening again are probably very small indeed, but it was proven to be possible, and with such serious consequences I doubt that the Authority really had any option but to do something about it. Looking at it from the point of view of the parents of the unfortunate child it is understandable. Putting a loop of towel around your neck while standing on something like a chair may not be very sensible, but five and six year olds sometimes do things that aren't very sensible. So do much older people.

Here in Taiwan it looks like they solved the issue of drying your hands. Every bathroom I have been in has no paper towels or dryer of any kind sometimes you will see a dishrag hanging there but that is all i have seen. Also the chinese style toilet is quite different I would describe it as a urinal laying in the ground that you squat over. Also you go in one bathroom in some places and there is a separate room in the bathroom for the ladies and sometimes there is not. I noticed also the cleaning ladies come in and clean around you no matter what you are doing at the moment.

We also had the roll towels until about 4 years ago. I liked them a lot and would still have them if the linen service would have stopped sending us moldy/greasy "clean" towels. I think the only places that really use them anymore are auto shops from the looks of the towels we have gotten in recent years.
Posted by Mark Hajducki (Member # 1732) on 05-14-2007, 05:05 PM:
I have seen an electric version of the roll towel machines. On the press of a button it issued a length of clean towel, then after a few seconds pull up the slack.
There are also disposable versions which issue a paper towel, but still on a loop so people don't litter.

OMG!!
Yeah...bathroom pranks and oddities.
People like to steal randomn stuff from our bathrooms, like the little air freshner things. We found one of them down the street. Also, just recently, someone stole the stick to our plunger.Left the rubber suction thing, but took the stick.
I wonder what the point value of coolness is on those types of things...
"Hey man...check THIS out...I got the stick, to the plunger, from the vogue theatre!!!!!!"
"Wow, your the coolest ever...."
And yeah, last week I swear to God, I had to unclog a toilet in the mens restroom. It wasnt clogged with toilet paper.
When I finally realized what was going on, and had found another plunger, with the handle...I literally had to pull my shirt up over my face in order to plunge without hurling all over the place.
In regards to people who find it neccessary to share their bodily waste with everyone...I just dont get it.
The extent some people go to....
Anyway, I remember those roller things...always confused me because it looked like the ucky old towling was coming right back out. Still dont understand the concept of them. LOL

Uhhhh, the roll is like a couple of hundred feet long. Are you saying you still don't get that?
Our theatre was built before there were concession stands, and thus they didn't see the need for restrooms. A ladies room was installed "as a convenience." When the law required two restrooms, the only solution was to convert a broom closet into a mens room, and there's only enough room for a urinal in there. (We use the other room as a unisex room in case a guy has to do a sit-down.)
Well you can imagine what happens occasionally in that urinal. Not fun.
Posted by Monte L Fullmer (Member # 2797) on 05-17-2007, 03:32 PM:
Speaking of W/C sizes: I know of a 900 seat theatre that has very small restrooms - mens with a urinal and a stool, womens having only two stools...but it did have a very small snakbar, so it kinda follows how Mike's ROXY was laid out - W/C size not in a necessity as they are now.

Here's one my friends and I tried in high school with varying levels of success:
Saran wrap the toilet bowl. Then put down the lid.
This trick works best when applied to toilets in the girls bathroom. I don't think enough females look before they sit. The lids in those bathrooms often don't have the piss drip gap either. So that makes it easier to hide your work. Depending on the bowl, you may need to use some clear tape if the cling wrap won't stick. The more neatly you do the job the harder it is to see the cling wrap. A light dusting of spray adhesive (from art class) can take away enough of the gloss to fool the eye even better.
Posted by Mike Blakesley (Member # 26) on 05-17-2007, 06:27 PM:
A guy at my day job did that trick once.
We had a secretary named Jane who used the bathroom like clockwork, every single day at 11:30 AM. You could set your watch by her. So, at 11:20 my friend Dave went into the restroom with the saran wrap. It was completely invisible.
Backfire: At 11:28, our boss went into the restroom. BUSTED! But we all had a good laugh after work.
Jane said it wouldn't have worked on her...she'd have known something was up when she found the toilet with the seat down!
Posted by Bobby Henderson (Member # 840) on 05-17-2007, 07:55 PM:
That's one reason why the trick does work in a womens bathroom. There's no reason for the lid to be in the "up" position.
Posted by Mike Blakesley (Member # 26) on 05-17-2007, 09:10 PM:
We only have one restroom at the store (Yes, another old building). In an auto parts store with one restroom, it's probably in the "up" position 99% of the time.

About 3 months ago we had someone set fire to toilet roll inside a dispenser. They must have lit the flame on a cigarette lighter and then pushed it up into the roll. I got summoned to check the toilets because the staff on our ticket check station could "smell burning". There was me using a paper cup to chuck cups full of water all over it until a manager with more sense came a long and unloaded a fire extinguisher on it.
Good job it was a metal toiler roll holder, don't know what would of happened if the vandals had hit one of the plastic ones will still had about the place.

Posted by Chris Slycord (Member # 4239) on 05-19-2007, 02:48 PM:
Not really a prank but once a guy comes walks past the doorstand and tells me "One of the stalls in the men's room needs to be looked at."
I get there and see the thing clogged by a thick pair of underpants. So I find a rubber glove and pick the thing up. Immediately a bunch of crap dumps out of them. Apparently, the guy in question crapped his pants and tried flushing the evidence down the toilet.
Posted by Bill Enos (Member # 440) on 05-20-2007, 01:52 PM:
One of the concession workers used the stall in question while we were waiting for the last few to leave the auditorium. One of those last few went into the ladies room after the employee left it. No one entered between the employee's exit and her entering. She was in there for about 10 minutes and left in a hurry. We thought she was the culprit but were uncertain because the mess wasn't discovered until the next morning and the employee left for Europe for 6 weeks that morning at 6 am. and just returned a few days ago and confirmed our suspicions.

Yup, like a shit grenade went off. Even the toilet paper roll was caked with shit. I was the only one there for several hours longer, so I undertook the task of cleaning it up.
Ever since, I've been wary of people in that kind of hurry, and figure if that would ever happen again, I'll just quit.
Posted by Bobby Henderson (Member # 840) on 05-21-2007, 06:15 PM:
I came close to cleaning up a similar mess, but instead threatened to quit my job right then and there.
This was back when I was in high school at Quantico, VA. I had a part time job working at the Staff NCO Club on the Marine Base there -washing dishes, busing tables...the sort of shit job a 10th grader could get.
We had this wedding reception on a Saturday night. It was pretty busy and the party-goers were getting good and drunk as hell. I go to use the bathroom only to find much of it demolished.
Someone had either punched or kicked a hole right through one of the wooden walls of around the only toilet in that men's room. And in the bottom of the stall, down next to the toilet, some drunk bastard was lying face up, passed out with his pants down around his ankles. His upper torso was covered in vomit. His lower areas were soiled with shit...as was a good amount of the bathroom floor.
I only stayed in there long enough to verify the son of a bitch was still breathing. I informed my boss about the drunk in the men's room and the mess either he or another friend caused, adding that I would quit before being made to clean up that mess. The way I saw it, somebody in the wedding party needed to clean up the restroom and pay for its damages. And that's what happened.
One sad aspect is things probably would have went differently had this been some civilian affair. I would have just had to quit my job and leave a coworker with the shit/vomit detail. At least in the Marines there is some fair level of accountability.

I worked with a guy many years ago who had an ostomy bag. He once showed me an unused one. From what I remember, it would not be possible create a shit grenade like incident by accident.
Even if pressure were applied to make the contents expell, releasing the pressure would stop it and only a small quantity would be released.

Old women hover. They don't want to put their bums down on the toilet seat so they just hover over the pot and let it rip.
My mother used to work in the Ladies Apparel department at a Macy's branch store. She used to tell me stories like this on an almost daily basis. She says it's because they hover.
She's also seen shit grenades go off in the women's fitting rooms. Apparently, they can't find the restrooms before they have to go, so they just let it fly in any convenient place.
Posted by Mike Blakesley (Member # 26) on 05-24-2007, 01:24 PM:
I've never understood why women (or anyone) "hover." Take a wad of paper towels and wipe the seat off (using water if necessary) and then just park it. Have a little confidence in your immune system. It's not like your butt skin is going to soak up the germs. You probably pick up more bugs from the door handle getting in and out of the restroom.
Posted by Randy Stankey (Member # 64) on 05-24-2007, 03:47 PM:
Seriously!
If a restroom isn't up to my standards I will go somewhere else, of course. But, if I think the seat may need a "touch up" before I sit down, my first stop is at the paper towel dispenser. Just add a little warm water and wipe.
What's the big deal?

Here's ANOTHER shit case:
Ushers cleaning #2 theatre found a BIG #2 in front of a seat where a woman of questionable intelligence had been sitting earlier. The woman was known for coming to see the Disney film, "WILD HOGS" almost every week of its run. She always bought a LARGE popcorn with tons of butter added. She was known as the Butter Lady. She also always wore the same clothes, and judging from the smell, she rarely bathed.
Anyway, when questioned, she denied doing anything, but when pressured by security, she blurted out that she had gone in the corner.
We banned her. All the employees rejoiced!
Two nights later, she returned. Said she had been to the doctor and wanted to see Wild Hogs again. She didnt get in.
A bad thing for me: I discovered that this woman lives in the house right behind MY home. Her house faces the other street, but it is her. Now, anytime I am in my back yard, I get cursed at from her house, loudly, and have been told by a friend that works at the local grocery store, that she is bad-mouthing me to anyone that will listen to her there.
The story will continue, I'm afraid...
We also believe that this woman was responsible for the shitting of our handicapped stall in the ladies room 2 nights before this happened. She was there.

One of the great things about working in an independent house is that you can deal with the assholes at street level without being concerned with the assholes in the ivory tower who never worked with the public at all. Maybe somebody should detonate a shit grenade in their executive suite restroom.

Someone projectile-vomited all over the mens room at a place I worked. It's one of the grossest things I've ever seen: All over the walls, the floor, one of the stalls, etc. I was working swing shift then, and the regular night cleaning crew refused to clean it up. They had to call in someone else to take care of it as a "specialty job".

Jason,
Long time no see!
Security singled her out after seeing her walking down the hallway from said theatre with brown ooze on her leg.
Nasty stuff.
Im not too worried about her rants toward me. I had nothing to do with her being banned, and was not even there that night.

At my wedding reception two years ago my wife and I found a shit storm in both the mens and womens bathrooms. It was apparently set by my sisters kids friends (who were never invited). They caused all kinds of damage to the church where we had our reception.
Instead of getting to our honeymoon suite, we stayed cleaning up the shit storm of hells spawn for three and a half hours.
My sister refused to apologize because "kids will be kids" is her answer.
I have not spoken to her since, nor do I ever intend to. Most of the family has also cut her off for that reason, as they thought it was abhorrent of her to bring uninvited people and then not stick around to fix the mess they make, forcing the bride and groom to clean it up.
I hate people sometimes.
Ciao

Dave, this is one of the worst pranks I could think of -- people doing such a thing at a wedding reception -- at a church of all places. That's about as hateful a prank as I could think of.

I'm hanging in there.. and I don't spend much time at all here anymore, maybe two-3 times a month..
You said quote: Bruce McGee

DAVE:
I wouldn't speak to a bitch like that either. I'm sorry, no, actually, I'm not sorry that I say that becuase only a sorry bitch would allow this to happen AND walk away from it.
