Hi, I've just taken over the running of my town's cinema which has been closed for the past few years, so I'm starting it up again from scratch. I've been offered a 35% discount on the price of Coke in 500ml cans. Does this seem like a good deal, or is it just the starting point offered to all new customers, and I should try to get more?

Maybe things are different in Iceland, but here Coke, Pepsi etc are not generally sold in cans by cinemas. It's more common to use post-mix machines, and the profit margin for the cinema is considerable.

In the declining years of the downtown single screen theatres, it was common to have vending machines in the lobby. There were three that I remember quite clearly: a canned pop machine, a candy machine and an ice cream bar machine. (I don't recommend the ice cream for cleanup reasons)

The concession stand was only open for the evening shows and the vending machines worked for the matinee and late evening hours after the concession stand closed. This predated the deposit on pop cans so that was not an issue.

I certainly don't know the situation in Iceland, but in Canada Coke's contract prices for cans are considerably higher than one can buy the stuff for at discount retail outlets. It's generally cheaper to buy the machinery and purchase the product yourself rather than entering a fridge/dispenser lease plus product contract with Coke. This is true with postmix as well, if you can get the syrup from channels other than direct from Coke.
