With all the attention being paid to DARK KNIGHT, don't forget that MOMMA MIA is also opening, and that will bring in an entirely different crowd then the Batman. Look for lots of middle aged women to turn out for this one. I think it will be much like the crowd that attended Hairspray. Also, I would expect HELLBOY to have a decent showing. While MOMMA MIA won't do DK's business, it should still be very respectable.

As for me, I plan on catching the new Hunter Thompson documentary. I'll wait awhile until Batman settles down.

Mamma Mia only opened this week in the US? We have had it for 3 weeks. It's been pretty popular lately, we sold out a session yesterday, to my amazement.

Mamma Mia opened in the UK last weekend and it's been doing very good business all week. And it's been strong so far for it's second weekend.

Next weekend should be good in the UK. Dark Knight is opening and expecting strong with WALL-E on it's 2nd week and the ongoing good business of Mamma Mia.

"Batman Begins" opened on a Wednesday and did around $75 mil for the FIVE days. So this one was super-impressive even considering increased ticket prices.

$48.7 (three-day). I don't see $75 million listed anywhere. $48.7 is what I see and only one place points out that it was a long weekend and lists $48.7 as a three-day total (not counting Wed & Thur?).

Edit:

Jul 15-16 (Wed&Thur): $24.2
Jul 17-19 (Fri-Sun): $48.7

Total five-day: $72.9 million

I wonder how much less TDK would have made if Heath Ledger was still alive. I guarantee it would have been less that $155 million. I bet it still would have done significantly better than Batman Begins, though.

Mamma Mia! was indeed the perfect compliment to Dark Knight. The older ladies leaving it were gushing just as much as the crowd leaving Dark Knight, so it may have some legs as well. What a weekend is right. Although the concessions sales were anemic for the midnight shows, Saturday and Sunday people ate like they were starving. And all of us are right in the middle of every water-cooler conversation in the world. Fantastic!
