Does anyone know of any off-the-shelf programs that allow you to use the Caller-ID data to initate events. I am thinking of being able to use it to bring up patron information when they call the Box Office. Or use it to direct patron-specific messages to that caller, even greeting them by name. I know Papa Johns has something like that because when I call to get pizza, they know my address.

Anyone use such a program?

I thought you wanted to manipulate the Caller ID data itself, like calling customers and having George Lucas or THX Ltd. show up on their Caller ID, and then scam them for lots of money or something. That would be ace! I still have the THX Ltd on my Caller ID from when they called me once. George isn't on there, yet.

FWIW: Using the incoming CLID data to trigger a database lookup is one thing. Manipulating your outgoing caller ID information is something else entirely.

Caller ID is appended into the ring cycle from information stored in the Telco switch. The name portion comes from their Signaling System's Service Control Point which is essentially a giant disk farm. To manipulate this data on outgoing calls you would have to have access to their equipment.

If you had a PBX you might be able to alter the line information but messing with the name would be more difficult.

If you had VOIP you might be able to get into the outgoing packets and make changes before they are transmitted.

My buddy works for a regional newspaper which has a PBX and is able to make any number they want show up as thier number on a caller ID.

That is correct. Since a PBX is essentially a mini central office it would send the "number" information. However, as I remember, the "name" portion of the caller ID would still be done by the Telco's SCP.
