Am I the only one who thinks this is totally unnecessary? Apparently the sequel will follow Lightning McQueen and Mater around the world meeting up with foreign cars. The sequel is due out in 2011.... [Eek!]

Where did you hear read this? PIXAR is really against sequels to there movies, except for the Toy Story franchise? I havn't heard this any where.

It is legit. During the Rocky Mountain convention, there was a seminar put on by Rentrak. The guy was demonstrating the release calendar feature and was showing how far it goes into the future... I remember seeing Cars 2 on Disney's list.

I know it was not everyones cup of tea, but the first Cars movie did do north of $250 million, and it sells a ton of merchandise to this day.

The bottom line Sally is if it makes money they'll produce it. I've managed theatres playing films I wouldn't walk across the street to see for free. I actually enjoyed "Cars" at a theatre I was managing and booking. Packed the house too.

IMDB has it as a 2012 release. I really enjoyed Cars and don't mind at all that they want to take it for another spin.

[thumbsup]

Cars 2 will be released in 2011, John...it was originally 2012 but now Pixar's "Newt" will be taking that space. Nearly all the films I'm looking forward to are sequels...Pirates 4 is confirmed, Ghostbusters 3 is on it's way, apparently there could be another Bourne installment, and Toy Story 3 of course. After all that I'm not sure there's any movies left I'll want to watch. Apart from The Hobbit of course, which will be filming near us very soon!

I liked Cars, and I would go see a second one. I thought some of the photo realistic animation was spectacular, and I hope they try to push it even further. Of course the first one took over 2000 processor years to render, sooo they better get hoppin!

Ghostbusters 2 was complete crap. A third one isn't pre-destined to share the same crappiness but probably will.

Agreed completely. A total waste of digital bits. At least one of the original cast (Aykroyd) is too fat to run around chasing ghosts! Maybe they can digitally put him back into shape.

I loved Pixar's Cars. Some members of F-T hated it, but that's not going to change how I feel about the movie. Cars was awesome. It also happens to be one of the very best looking movies one can buy on Blu-ray.

As much as I liked Cars, I have some feelings of dread about a sequel for that movie. However, Toy Story 2 was a lot of fun. And I'm pretty sure Toy Story 3 3D will be pretty good as well.

Pirates 4 and Ghostbusters 3? Yeesh. I'm already smelling poo poo fumes from that.

That is all but guaranteed. My father's literary agent is Henry Morrison, executor to the estate of Robert Ludlum, the author of the Bourne novels. He was an executive producer on the two previous Bourne movies and is talking with Universal about the movie. Hardly anything specific can be reported about it other than Matt Damon and director Paul Greenglass are attached and Scott Burns is working on the screenplay. Morrison is dealing with that project and working on a lot of other things -like my dad's own books and now screenplay work. Through that association I know a new Bourne movie is pretty certain (even IMDB has stuff posted about it). Morrison just finished working an optioning deal on a classic and controversial western novel so it can be made into a new movie. It was previously adapted into a movie decades ago. This one will be more true to the book, and R-rated for it. Obviously I'm not going to specifically say what the novel is since the movie deal isn't final yet. I'm hoping the best for my father since he has been working his ass off writing for the last 22 years and he's long overdue for some big success.

I'd be willing to bet they'll PG-13 it. You don't make a PG-13 rated franchise and then all of a sudden put in an R-rated segment (unless you're trying to kill it). You can make the PG-to-PG13 transition, but that's about it.

Wasn't Paul Newman's voice in the shitty first movie? Since he just croaked and is now a rotting corpse (maybe even being embalmed as I type this), I see this as a sign that Cars 2 should absolutely NOT even be attempted. If they make it closer to the book as Bobby says it could be decent, but I doubt Cars 2 will be R or PG-13.

The original western I'm hinting to was released in 1943. It was based on a novel written in 1940. There's no current "franchise" in place on it. The novel definitely has some stuff in it, that if accurately visualized, would get an R-rating. My father's screenplay of that old novel keeps much of that stuff intact.

Anyway, that's off topic. I only brought it up to show my father's business relationship with Henry Morrison -and that gives him a bit of an inside view on what's happening with the 4th Bourne movie.

[Confused]
[Razz]

There's no doubt Cars 2 will be G-rated.

Oops, I'm guilty of skimming there. I thought you were referring to the next Bourne movie. Sorry about that.

I loved Cars, so I'm excited about a sequel - especially coming from Pixar. My least favorite Pixar movie was A Bugs Life, and I still really liked it. I think that speaks volumes for the quality of the films they release.

I agree with Sally, why bother. I hope Pixar doesn't start turning out sequels left and right, and not have any new movies to show for it. Though I'd be first in line for a Wall-e sequel [Smile]

I'd pay to see Ghostbusters 3 with the original cast. Fat, balding, old, I don't care, I'd still watch it. I will NOT watch it if some idiot like Ashton Kutcher or the like is cast in place of one of them. The second one was a stinker, but I loved the first one.

Maybe the Ghostbusters video game I've been waiting for FOREVER will come out next year and not be canceled like it was a few months ago [Mad]

Posted by Joe Redifer (Member # 3) on 09-27-2008, 07:31 PM:

It was never canceled, that was a misleading rumor. The game was written by Dan Ackroyd and Harold Ramis. All of the voices have been recorded, including Bill Murray and Winston. The game continues the story from the first two movies and was considered by Ackroyd to be the true legitimate sequel, so it'll be interesting to see how a movie turns out.

Bobby, but do you think Cars 2 will be closer to the book?

The whole thing just smells of cash-in mentality among all the principals involved. How long since any of them have had a hit? (Wasn't Harold Ramis involved in something decent not too long ago? Memory failing, must lie down.) With Cars 2, at least you've got John Lasseter, who is an admitted car freak, and probably has a few more automotive stories to tell, and his source material isn't from the 1980s.

We were in Disney World a couple of weeks ago and there is talk of a WALL-E robot who (which?) will actually go around picking up trash and interact with guests.

Joe, have you seen a date for it yet? I know it's not going to be in October anymore. Hell, they had some of the game to play at some of the Comic Cons this year.

Um, so did the new Indiana Jones, but I still saw it.

Well, they already have the robotic trash can in Tomorrowland. Although that is a remote controlled job. Somewhere there's a picture of my mom's goofy ex-husband with the thing. People who see that picture often wonder why the hell he got his picture taken standing next to a trash can (with his arm around it no less). A robotic Wall-E would be cool.

Cars was a great movie, much better than Wall-E in my opinion.

The Blu-ray edition of Cars makes for a great demo disc, and if you've ever seen the extras on the Cars disc, there was plenty of creative material oozing out of those characters. "Mater and Ghostlight" was great!

A sequel to a great movie should always be approached with trepidation, but there have been examples of sequels that equaled or surpassed the originals. Rooster Cogburn, Toy Story 2, and Aliens are three that come to mind right away.

Heck, I'd even see Wall-E 2 if they just stayed on Earth (no humans, and no Eve) and followed Wall-E and the cockroach around!

Agree with TS2 and Aliens, but Rooster Cogburn sucked mightily and smelled of ca$h-in-itis.

John - you are right about the cash-in, but the John Wayne/Katherine Hepburn combo had great chemistry. I thought it was a good movie. Although it didn't have a great line or scene to match "Fill your hand, you son-of-a-bitch!"

Posted by John Wilson (Member # 269) on 10-07-2008, 06:19 PM:

Yes, great chemistry...shows even back in the 70's they went for the stars and forgot to write a decent script. [Roll Eyes]

IMHO, Cars seemed "borrowed" from the 1991 Michael J. Fox starrer "Doc Hollywood" - so much so that I am surprised that there has not been a plagerism lawsuit filed.

Wonder what they will "borrow" from for the second one?

Posted by Mike Blakesley (Member # 26) on 10-08-2008, 06:44 PM:

Oh come on...it was a 'fish out of water' big city/small town story, sure, but it had no more to do with Doc Hollywood than any other FOOW story, of which there are many.

Even though he did lend his voice to the Ghostbuster video game, Bill Murry has NO interest in appearing in a "live action" version of GB3. Also Rick Moranis considers himself retired and wouldn't even do the game. From what I heard the plans are to do a CGI film (similar to the Clone Wars movie) instead.

I am 50/50 on this. Though I would perfer a live action film, I understand that the guys are way too old to pull it off. They would have to recast and since Ackroyd and Ramis own full rights to the franchise, it is doubtful that they would ever go that route. Somehow I doubt that this project will get off the ground.

Recent Murray interview on GB3...

http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=49375[

Q:
You play a hero in "Ghostbusters" and a villain in this movie. Is it more fun playing a good guy or a bad guy? And what persuaded you to go back for the rumored "Ghostbusters 3"?
Murray:
Well, you're way ahead of me, but that's okay. There's someone trying to write a script for another "Ghostbusters" movie. There's two fellows from "The Office" that are writing a script, but I have yet to see it. And I'm more involved with, you know, trying to get the dessert we order at lunch than I am with the new "Ghostbusters" sequel. (Laughter) But it's possible. It's a great idea that they hired these two guys to do it, 'cause I think it could be a fresh look at it. And it could be funny. We did a sequel and it was rather unsatisfying for me, because the first one to me was 'the goods.' It was the real thing, and the sequel, you know, it was a few years later, and there was an idea pitched. They got us all together in a room. We just laughed for a couple of hours, and then they said, "What if we did another one? Here's an idea these guys have got." So they had this idea, but it didn't turn out to be the idea when I arrived on the set. They'd written a whole different movie. And the special effects guys got their hands on it, and it was just not the same movie. There were a few great scenes in it, but it wasn't the same movie. So there's never been an interest in a third "Ghostbusters" 'cause the second one was kind of disappointing, for me, anyway. But the third one could happen.

Q:
So would you go back for "Ghostbusters" again?
Murray:
Only if I could play an evil person. (Laughter) No, it's mostly all about the script. I don't have any obligation to the franchise or anyone. If the script were good and I thought we could do it, it'd be fun. But, you know, it's only now that this has ever been a prospect. No one's ever talked about it for a long time, 'cause the second one was the way it was. This is just kind of a clever idea. I think they see that, and the fact that every interview today has asked me about the "Ghostbusters" movie--every single person--means that there is some interest for it. You think you're talking about the "City of Ember," but I've answered as many questions about the "Ghostbusters" as I have about… well, not as many, but, I mean, on every single one. So there's interest in it.

~~~~
*sigh* when I see it in a theatre, I'll believe it. Same with another Dirty Harry flick.
I must have old information then. Mine came from an interview I read in I believe Yahoo Games with Dan Ackroyd about the new game game because of course while talking about the game, they had asked him about the possible third movie. This was a couple of months ago so things may have changed by then.
