Regal just sent out a newsletter email to its loyalty club members saying The Dark Knight will be back in theaters, including IMAX, on Jan. 23rd. Is this strictly a Regal thing, or will the movie be in true wide release again?

According to BoxOfficeMojo it's only going to be 250 theatres. That basically means just major markets. The Early Report on FilmJerk.com is says 200+ theatres plus 50 IMAX.

I will be too, Geoff. I'll be driving past several. My brother will be leaving his city and their digital presentations to go see it at King of Prussia and if I know my brother, he will be bringing a car (or two) full of people with him.

I'm curious. Everyone I talked to so far has said that they would pay to see it again in IMAX. Is there anyone who has seen it in IMAX before who is NOT going to be interested in seeing it again this time?

I might not be seeing it again this time, but that's largely because I saw it 5 times- 3 in IMAX, once in a standard showing, and then once with Open Caption.

Though seeing it again would give me an excuse for taking pictures of more theatres....

I guess the question is, how do we know which theatre is playing it in 70mm and which in digital? I saw it in IMAX this summer in Vegas (Brendan) but fell asleep through half of it (NO- not because of the movie, but sheer exhaustion). BUT I am seeing it with a friend who loved the movie but only saw it standard and who has never seen IMAX before, so I HOPE the Universal City AMC is STILL showing 70mm and not digital. Anyone I know for sure?

From my experience seeing "Eagle Eye" in IMAX Digital I doubt sincerely they could fill a full-sized IMAX screen with the digital product. In King of Prussia PA they still have 70mm as of DTESS. It's a pretty safe bet Universal City still has real IMAX.

Funny I can get away with calling it "real IMAX" here versus the bastardized version and no one complains but if I refer to "real Star Trek" over the upcoming "reboot" (termed as such for Mike Schindler)I get blasted.

Funny how I see your last comment as a non sequitur. What's happening with Star Trek is nothing like what's happening with IMAX.

Hint: With IMAX, the company is falling over themselves to make it seem like the new IMAX is no different than the old and is the exact same experience whereas no one is claiming that the new Star Trek movie is going to be the same experience as the original.

There's now an IMAX MINI here in Sydney at the HOYTS complex at Fox Studios.

The normal look of wonderment that goes along with attending a screening at the other real IMAX here at Darling Harbor(with the world's largest screen no less) is replaced by all accounts by another look of wonderment upon entering the MINI auditorium...that of wondering why they just forked out a premium IMAX price when the auditorium looks no different than a regular theatre.

For the IMAX brand to survive, they've got to sort this out.

Why the hell HOYTS didn't just come up with a new name like KING KONG HOYTS or something (I know it's a dumb name but you get the idea) and just double up some 2k machines themselves is beyond me. They're paying for the IMAX name for no reason.

It is unfortunate Regal's installation of Digital IMAX at Honolulu's Dole Cannery 18 will not be in place until March. I would have love seeing BATMAN:THE DARK KNIGHT in IMAX. I guess I will have to be satisfied watching the movie on a Blue-Ray disc to see how it was presented in all of the special digital IMAX venues.

First of all, switching from IMAX 70mm to IMAX digital can hardly be considered an "upgrade". Maybe I should have clarified, but putting an IMAX projector in a standard shaped theater doesn't make it an IMAX theater in my opinion. Thanks for the info though.

Perhaps "upgrade" wasn't the best word...how about "changed from 15/70 to digital".

But, I do agree on placing a 15/70 unit in a traditional auditorium. I've frequently referred to the local MPX unit as an "Imax, Jr." and I believe that is a very good description.

On another front, I thought the director of Batman didn't want the film to play in the digitial locations. At least this was true on the original release, I believe.

I had heard that as well. I imagine the director wasn't the only one on the crew who felt that way. When you watch the behind the scenes stuff on the Blu-Ray you can hear how proud those guys are of their accomplishments - as well they should be. Other than the variable aspect ratio, I would think that a lot of the stunning results of that hard work would be lost with a digital presentation. I would be very curious to see the difference in box office revenue between the film and digital versions of this release of this movie.

I watched The Dark Knight in both 2K d-cinema and IMAX. I strongly prefer the 15/70mm IMAX version. I really hope The Dark Knight wins the cinematography Oscar. The crew did a lot of hard work shooting the 15/65 footage. It looks noticeably better than the 35mm stuff, even on Blu-ray.

Oh, and the idea of replacing a film-based IMAX system with a digital one is not an upgrade at all. It is a very serious DOWN-grade. IMAX Digital is not IMAX at all. The only real IMAX is the 15/70 stuff. Period.

It's gonna be skewed, though. If you look at sheer numbers, film will win because even when it came out, most theaters weren't digital [and I assume the same is true now]. It's nowhere near an equal number of screens. And if you go by a per-screen number then you get skewed by the fact that, as the new jokey training video tells us, "Digital is a powerful buzz-word."

I saw it today at 3:45 at the UA Colorado Center Imax in Denver. The print was in excellent shape; looked brand new. The sound seemed louder than when I saw it last summer; noticeably more bass.

It still looked too dark to me. (I complained about this last summer to disinterested managers.) I got to wondering though - I sit pretty low & close (3rd or 4th row). Is there somehow less light reflection when you're sitting that low in an Imax theatre?

The crowd was small, around 30, I'd guess.

There was nothing before the movie - no trailers, and no annoying commercials or ads. Yay!

A friend of mine and I saw it tonight at 6pm at the Universal City IMAX Theatre. While I absoultely HATE AMC's redesign of this complex (seemingly nothing was done to the IMAX theatre), the presentation was excellent. The print seemed flawless and was very bright from the back row. Four previews preceeded it: Star Trek, Harry Potter (teaser only), Watchmen and Monsters Vs. Aliens.
