Panther attendance has been PATHETIC at the theater I'm at in San Francisco. When I left earlier tonight, I had exactly FOUR people watching the 7:30pm show.

I think the biggest crowd we had at any show since it opened Friday was about 50. The late show on opening nite had maybe 12 people.

However, I think it has something to do with the upscale neighborhood the theater is in. Generally speaking, this type of comedy never does well there. It's considered a "mall movie", and most of the people who live in that area wouldn't set foot in a a mall multiplex.

On the he other hand, "He's Just Not That Into You" and "Slumdog Millionaire" are selling out almost every night lately. "Frost-Nixon" "Revoloutionary Road" and "Benjaman Button" are still doing extremely well and occasionally still selling out depsite the fact we've been playing all since their opening dates.

(Well,actually, the last few "Frost-Nixon" sell-outs don't really count since we moved it into a tiny "screening room" size theater that can hold maybe 40 people, if they all take their coats off! We could probably show home movies in there and sell out most nites)

After the first movie did relatively well, I was floored by the weak opening for the sequel. And given what I saw at my theatre, I wouldn't be surprised if that $12 million is somewhat inflated.

What really had me surprised was the continued strength of Mall Cop. In the fourth weekend it did 50% more than the opening weekend of Pink Panther 2.

The first movie made $20 million opening. Not great but not terrible either.

But you're missing something big:
People who didn't want to see the first one are unlikely to watch this one at all and a lot of the people who did watch it hated it. So you've got a medium size pool of people who saw the movie and from that you get to find the few that actually liked it enough to sit through a couple hours of the same thing.

Chris, I have to disagree with you about the first movie. While it didn't break any records, it did go on to make $82 million - about 4 time the opening weekend. And the week to week drops were relatively small - less than 50% for each of the first 6 weeks and all but one week was less than 40%. Furthermore, it made $50 million from DVD rentals and another $23 million in DVD sales. Plus it had a B rating from over 25,000 Yahoo users and a 3/5 rating on Netflix.

I'm not trying to argue that The Pink Panther was a big hit. I'm just saying there was no reason to think the sequel would do so poorly.

Weird because on imdb it has over just over 21,540 votes and an average rating of 5.1 out of 10.
