It is hard to believe Hawaii had only one digital 3-D theatre for almost two years and by the end of this week there will be a total of five. The Reading-Consolidated's Ward 16 became Honolulu 2nd digital 3-D house when BOLT was released a couple of months ago and three more are scheduled to open this Friday. The theatres with new 3-D installation are Regal's Pearl Highland with Real D and Reading- Consolidated's Mililani 14 with Dolby 3-D. The 3rd theatre is Regal Dole Cannery 18 with their 2nd 3-D system but it is an IMAX system this time.. All theatres are scheduled to play the JONAS BROTHER'S CONCERT 3-D film. The IMAX showing in 3-D will run only one weeK because WATCHMEN is scheduled to open the following week in 2-D IMAX. This will not be the end of the 3-D expansion in Honolulu because Regal is scheduled to open a new multiplex complex with all digital projection in Kapolei near where I live by this fall. At the rate new 3-D films are being released, I am sure there will be more theatres that will be capable of playing them by the end of the year here in Hawaii and everywhere.

From what I've heard, Regal had some pretty lofty goals of having at least 1 - 3 Real D capable screens at each of their locations in time for Monsters vs Aliens, but ran into some pretty big roadblocks with the financing. Their short term solution was to shuffle around existing Digital Projectors that the company already had installed in other buildings, particularly in buildings that had more than one, and move them to other locations to try and expand their 3-D Capacity. I also heard that they had some sort of agreement with Real-D that they were obligated to have a certain number of screens outfitted with their equipment by a certain date.

Monsters vs Aliens is the big one that is being pushed big time for the 3-D. Paramount had hoped to have it on over 3000+ 3-D screens on opening day, but given that DCIP seems to remain at a standstill, and the credit markets are still not that good, they will be lucky to see even half of that.

Donno, they sell big cans of popcporn at Costco during Christmas time... % flavors in one can I think... They may be the ones doing that!

The really bad thing about Real-D is that you can't install any other brand of 3-D at that site for 10 years... There are better systems available too!

Dole Cannery is a mall that occupies what used to be, well, the cannery for Dole before it was shut down.

Idunno about that. There's a theater in Florida that has 2 Dolbys and one Real D (it could be the other way around, I can't remember exactly) in the same building.

I believe it depends on if you sign an exclusive deal with Real D that it would prevent you from using any other system.

The Dole Cannery Centre opened many years at what used to be exactly that, The Dole Pineapple Cannery. Rather than demolishing the original cannery buildings, the developers who had purchased the property decided to develop it into a shopping mall consisting of trendy shops with movie theatres, banquet halls and a international food court. When it first opened, it looked like is was going to be successful but when the public preferred to shop at Honolulu's other malls especially the Ala Moana Centre, almost everything at the Dole Cannery with the exception of the movie theatres, banquet halls and a few stores, everything else folded. The parts of the building where most of the stores were look pretty bleak now.

I enjoy going to the Dole Cannery theatres especially when they will have a IMAX screen this weekend and stores like Costco and Best Buy are nearby.

Customers of ours have checked and this is the only way Real-D does it. There IS no choice in the matter and there is at least other system that IS much better.

I heard a rumor that our "local" Regal Cinemas just added 3-D. Not sure if it's true. Guess I will find out soon enough.

We just had 3 of our port glass' replaced for when our digital shows up. I'm sure if there's a difference or if its just "you're getting digital, you'll get new port glass too."

Also, can anyone explain what "TRU 3D" means? Its said on the Monsters vs. Aliens trailer it'll be available in tru 3d. Both my tech & I watched this at the same time and turned to each other wondering what that term meant.

Yep! Some port glass is NOT compatable with polorized 3-D... especially some plastic type port glass. Also... good port glass can make as much as a couple of foot lambert difference in light level! Tru 3-D is just a bunch of hype.

It's not in "TRU 3D", it's "InTru 3D". I think that Intru is just a 3D animation division between Intel & Dreamworks.
