This is the last year for ShoWest at Bally's. Next year it moves to Ceasars and will be run by Nato. It will also have a new name, not ShoWest.

That's another reason I'm savin' up. Have been to the Bally's convention once, but have never been to Caeasar's Palace except a walk-through one time, so hopefully the NATO convention will live up to their promises of all the ways it's going to be better.

Quick question, I've always wanted to go to showest but due to travel expenses, time off, etc I've never had a chance. Should I just try and plan better? Or is Showeast a pretty good substitute? Showeast is really close for me, and I can't wait to go to either show

Just wanted to know if showeast is even close

If you can only go to one...ShoWest is the one...it MUCH bigger. Mind you a Cinema show is but a "gathering" compared to other industries. ShowEast's trade show is about 1/4 the size of ShoWest.

I went in 2006 and 2007 and had total fun at both. But true, would like to make the 2011 premiere convention across the street at Caesar's Palace looking from Bally's.

I've been attending these shows since 1982 so I will definitely be there this year since it's the last and I can say Good Riddens to Balley's!!! They really should tear that place down... it's become way too dated even for Vegas. I am looking foreword to the new Show at Cesar's next year and may actually attend the entire shabang... A new location/producer for Show West is way over due.

I am also planning on checking out the Pawn Shop that is featured on Pawn Stars... Those guys are such a hoot!

So they're going back to Caesars. Everything old is new again. My first ShoWest, where I got to run the Tron promo reel for Disney (who provided all of the projection for ShoWest that year), was at Caesars.

Hopefully, I'll be so busy next year I won't be able to attend.

Mark, be ready to wait in line at "Pawn Stars." I was going to stop there last week and there was a line of 50+ with a door man limiting the number of people allowed in at one time. This was at 7:30 in the morning so I just drove right on by.

It's pretty much now the "DLP Cinema and digital signage (last year's hot item) Show"

The glory days of being able to sneak into/crash the lunches, schmooze-a-rama and dinners are long gone as well.

I still have a good time there however.

Chris... I drove to the pawn shop last night around 10 pm thinking the later the better chance I might have of getting in. No such luck though as there were about 15 people standing in line to get in ... Perhaps 3 am would work better but Chumley will be sleep walking at that hour!

Showest seems to have more foreigners this year than English speaking people. Only Cinemeccanica displayed a film projector, ok Kinoton did too for those that want to spend uber amounts of dollars! Christie is backlogged with d-cinema projector orders till September.

Film 3-d is looking mighty good!!!!

I am also at the Gold Coast. They replaced the restaurant there with a TGIFs. That sucks IMHO. I won't be staying here next year because of that.

A side trip to Hoover Dam to see the utterly amazing arch bypass bridge was well worth the time. When you come around the curve and meet the massive arch head on you almost slam on the brakes in awe. It's truely an engineering marvel that no photo can do justice to. Ya have to see this in person!

I've also heard that some other company contacted one of the remainings with 35mm because they closed a deal for 35mm as well as D-Cinema and couldn't deliver!! Figure that.

Actually, Strong also has a film projector. In fact, only Christie isn't showing one, of the regulars (they did at ShowEast though).

I must say, ShoWest is as busy as I've seen it in about 4 or 5 years...much more vibrant than in past years.

As for film 3D. Not only is there Technicolor 3D but the folks that designed the famed Paramount box as well as the SiriusII are back and reissuing the SiriusII. It will run most any over/under film based 3D.

Another entry is Oculus with side-by-side version but with a twist. Rather light efficient and one isn't going to splice them and mess up the left/right orientation.

The question is for the film 3Ds...who is going to make the prints (that is, which studios will strike 3D prints and will they actually have multiple inventories for the various types)?

Unless the studios commit, it is safer to go with Digital 3D instead of film. Studios need to commit to bringing 3D content on film.

The new 3-D disaster: Once again, nothing was learned from the 'stereo sound fiasco' of the '90s. But, most of the suits involved were probably still in high school when that happened.

I was mighty impressed with two things at Showest...

1. The new NEC projectors... The 2000 and the 3000. They are amazingly re-designed and no longer the rats nest the 1600 and 2500 were. Both projectors feature a three screw(captive screws) 2-plug 15 minute light engine swap.

#2 was the new GDC Server. You can play back directly off the DCP should it arrive late and you can move the RAID drives between any other server... and not have to keep track of which drive is which within the array. Thus it is another way to keep extra films in the booth for near instant access. Also is the possibility of using an SSD for the OS in the server to get the boot up time drastically shortened.

The Sirus 2 lens is compatable with Technicolor Prints, like they will let you use it... but they are asking 20K for the lens... a bit too steep for what will soon become a paperweight on some one's desk in this day and age. The Sirus Lens did have a Kowa Look to it! Donno about Bell and Howell in there but I'd say if they are there is more Howell than Bell.

I noticed more foreigners then I did English speaking people this year. Next year I'll have to hire a translator!

ShoWest, the movie-theater industry’s annual trade convention, is always filled with endless variations on carpeting and bathroom cleaners, but it’s also the place to check out more exciting innovations, from new concession-stand items (I sampled a Buffalo chicken flatbread sandwich and a mini apple dumpling) to forthcoming onscreen entertainment (Phish in 3D!). Here are the two coolest things I saw at ShoWest this year:

Cinema Immerz is the latest attempt to create a more overwhelming sensory experience at the movies. The apparatus fits over your shoulders and sits on your chest, where it vibrates and pulsates along with the onscreen sound. The demo featured the trailer for some Z-grade sci-fi movie, and it kind of felt like having two cell phones set on “vibrate” sitting on my chest, only a little more intense. The device is first rolling out for home video-game players, but the company hopes to have wireless versions available for movie theaters soon.

The fancy Coke booth was touting a machine called Coca-Cola Freestyle, clearly the awesome beverage dispenser of the future. Currently being beta tested in a single Atlanta theater, Freestyle has a touch screen with 106 different varieties of Coke products (including flavors from around the world), which the machine mixes itself on demand according to precise calculations. Coke’s rep noted that Freestyle was developed using technology that had initially been created for cars and medical devices, but this is clearly a much better use.
