This year we have.

4321 - British indie film from the makers of Adulthood.

I've a headace over the last two allready.

At first I started tearing the latter onto the reels of the former then noticed that the soundtrack didn't match and I had more empty reels than I did reels on the platter.

I went to IMDB to count how many "Pride and Prejudices" are out there, when I found a listing for "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies", a feature starring Natalie Portman scheduled for 2011, which is based on a novel that really exists at Amazon.

Then I lost all interest.

These can cause problems in the NetFlix line:

"Alien" and "Aliens" (gotta see them in the right order)

"Slacker"(Richard Linklater's first feature) and "Slackers" (2002 teen flick)

"Crash"(2004 the Academy Award Winner) and "Crash"(1996 the sicko film about cars)

"Working Girls" (1986 doc about prostitution) and "Working Girl" (the Melanie Griffith movie)

Of course, back in the glory days of porn there were lots of parody titles.

Last year, I had a Hindi movie titled Hero and a Telugu movie titled Heroes (and they were totally different films, mind you, not two versions of the same film, as often happens in Indian cinema) open on the same day.

It's more interesting when movies with similar titles come out at the same time. There was "Big" and "Big Business", and the local twin theater showed both at the same time. My first year working at a theater we had "The Doctor" and "Doc Hollywood", and a lot of customers weren't sure which was the movie they really wanted to see.

Speed, One, Ransom all those titles have been used many different times (sometimes with an article in front of the word). But those are pretty basic words. Sometimes it's obviously that they are trying to trick the audience, we all know The Evil Dead from 1981, right? There's also a somewhat bizarre Japanese horror film called (in English anyway) Evil Dead Trap from 1988.

as for ones at the same time:

Live Free or Die (2006) got its limited theatrical release not long before Live Free or Die Hard (2007) did, right? I seem to remember some confusion existed about that.

Crazy Heart (2009) Crazy on the Outside (2010) and The Crazies (2010) all came out within about a month or two of each other. A Serious Man and A Single Man are both from 2009, and are both up for Oscars tomorrow (though, for different categories).

Not strictly two movies, but I wonder how many people went to see James Cameron's "Avatar", thinking it was based on the TV cartoon of the same name?

Another example I can think of is "The Ring" coming out around the same time as the second "Lord of the Rings" movie.

Of course, The Last Airbender is also a movie coming out in July of this year.

Both films were in US theatres at the same time. And yes, there was confusion, mostly from families showing up to the latter looking for the former.

I remember seeing a campy buddy cop movie in the mid 1980s called Running Scared, starring Gregory Hines and Billy Crystal. It was one of those hazy, desaturated Peter Hyams movies where's he's both the Director and DP.

Then another Running Scared movie was released in 2006. Totally different movie starring Paul Walker and Vera Farmiga before she starred in The Departed.

IMDB shows 2 other movies of the same title and a TV series.

Another one that was a bit odd: 28 Days and 28 Days Later. Both movies were released only a couple years apart. Made for nice channel surfing confusion when looking for movies to watch on cable/satellite.

I was disappointed that 28 Days Later wasn't the sequel to 28 Days ala "Another 48 Hours" and "Die Hard 2: Die Harder" and "2 Fast 2 Furious".

Oh, right, that one even caused some confusion theatrically, not just on cable, even though they were released over 3 years apart (in the States anyway). One of the internet movie ticket websites (I forget which one) had 28 Days listed when it was really 28 Days Later.... Complete with a picture of the poster with Ms. Bullock on it and a summary of the Betty Thomas film, even though it was actually the Danny Boyle one that was playing. Thankfully this wasn't for my location, but I imagine there were more than a few people that got foiled by that.

I see there is a documentary from 2008 called 28 Days to Vegas too.

Well, the opening title for New Moon was in fact just "New Moon" no silly "Twilight Saga" on it ... granted the closing title did say "Twilight Saga New Moon" (without the "the" at the beginning, oddly). But it's true that it's kind of silly to have "The Twilight Saga" tacked on to the front of each of these titles in the promotions... as though the target demographic wouldn't know what it was. People don't seem to have difficulty figuring out that new James Bond films are in fact James Bond films, despite "Bond" or "007" not being tacked on the title.

There was a lawsuit over the porno "Very Dirty Dancing" from Vestron who produced "Dirty Dancing"- they thought people would think it was a sequel to their movie. There's tons of porn take-off titles though.
