I've started looking into a patron pager system, like those installed in many restaurants.

Has anyone come across a system that allows the operation of the patron's pager to be customized? IE., I don't want the flashing lights, or an audible tone -- for obvious reasons -- just the vibration.

Could just open them up and disconnect the lights and the little buzzer/speaker.

Yeah, though I'd prefer to find something that was configurable as a feature.

Our system is made by LRS, and I do believe there is a "vibrate only" option in the transmitter setup settings.

You can enter the transmitter setup menu via the keypad on the front of the transmitter, and scroll through the menu(s) to get to the pager setup feature. From there you can select lights, vibrate, buzzer, or any combination of the above and for how long they do it. With our business being a drive-in, we have our pagers set to all 3, and have them continually go off until they are returned to the charging station.

We got a 20 pager system from www.foodsoftware.com . I believe the gentleman's name I spoke with was "Dan". Very courteous, very informative, and I felt like we got a good value for the money.

We had a bad transmitter that died after one day of use, and I called the 24/7 1-800 help line and was able to speak with a live person at 1:00 a.m. in the morning! The promptly sent me a replacement transmitter, and with the exception of my application needing an external antenna for the transmitter, we haven't had a problem with them at all.

David, Just curious -- what are you using them for? First thing that comes to mind is concessions orders, which would be a very interesting idea.

We work with a local pizza place to provide subs, pizzas, salads, etc. It takes 15-20 minutes for the order to arrive and the problem we have is getting the food to the customer. Now, it's a mixture of SMS, "come out in 20 minutes", or "we'll bring it to you" (if it's not busy).

The food option is really popular (the stromboli are great) and more people are taking advantage of it. The pizza place gives us a deep discount, so we do pretty well on this. Now that we've been open for a few months, our audience is growing and so are the number of orders. It's to the point where our existing "system" just doesn't cut it.

Having the pagers would be a godsend. They're ubiquitous, and people are used to them. They seem foolproof. We could also use them for specialty drink orders --espresso, mixed drinks more complicated than pouring vodka into some tamarind juice, etc. -- that would take too long to have the customer wait at the stand.
