Went to see YOUNG ADULT yesterday at the Gateway Cinema, Columbus. I was surprised when I was told that the movie was in a new room...they had converted a former multi-purpose room to a movie room. The room has 22 seats and a very large screen for a room that size.

The problem is that the NEC projector is above the rear door with no soundproofing. It is just sitting there with a VERY VERY noisy fan running constantly. I've seen reports on F-T that boothless locations were opening, but they have some type of enclosure for the equipment.

When I complained, the theatre said they were not planning on any enclosure, but they had at least one other complaint.

To paraphrase our late friend, Mr. Pytlak, this is Digital-Done-Wrong. I hope no one else out there is doing this!

I was surprised how noisy the fans in the NEC are. Definitely not a boothless-friendly machine (at least without some major modifications).

How dare you complain Mark. The theater owner saved money in building the theater and you have no right to complain.

Now get your butt back to that theater and buy lots of concessions to help support them.

NEC's are unquestionably the noiseist projectors out there. The reason is that it takes more air flow because of the Heppa Filters that are used and it takes more fans. The Heppa filters are a good thing. I've seen both other manufacturer's projectors dripping popcorn oil inside the lamphouse... you will never see that in an NEC.

To me the Sony 320s are way louder than any of the NECs - the Sony's just screech at you! I used to joke about the sounds a 320 makes when you fire up the lamp - sounds like the drive belts need to be tightened, or at least have some belt dressing sprayed on them! [Big Grin]

It's nice to know that Sony is using drive belts to turn over it's ignitors... or are they rotating the lamp to age it better?

With three large HEPA filters on the port side of the Sony unit, you oughta feel the air being pulled through through these filters-quite the suction..and no wonder why these are more noiser than the NEC units. Barcos are lots quieter-they just have the front filter and two small port side filters.

Yes, these units do put up a good screech when they get turned on-bet the fans are, as mentioned, belt driven by high torque motors for sudden cooling.

Digital done wrong is done on a hacked motor cycle lift to adjust the height of the projector.

Does no one realize with all the air movement in this machine it's going to get dusty all over this visible piece of equipment really fast?

Chuck a coke up top and let it drip through the vents. That'll teach em...

Seems like common sense to put a $75k machine inside SOME kind of protective enclosure. Do they have no vandals or thieves in that area?
No earthquakes ot knock it down on top of someone?

This if course is also a good point regarding insurance. If I were an insurance inspector I'd not allow that. It's mental.
