With all the press of other competing technologies such as IMAX and Real D. It is kind of nice to see Dolby get in on the action. I have always and will firmly maintain the notion that Dolby needs to get in on the naming of theatres calling them Dolby Theatres with Dolby Atmos.

Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, a production of New Line Cinema and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures, and the second installment in the Hobbit film trilogy, will hold its worldwide premiere at the Dolby Theatre in Dolby 3D and Dolby Atmos sound on Monday, December 2. “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey was presented in Dolby Atmos. It opened up so many possibilities in terms of using sound for storytelling and delivered an experience so realistic, we knew it had to be a part of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug,” said Dolby Atmos rerecording mixer Gilbert Lake. “The goal of the sound team is to make audiences believe they are on the journey through Middle-Earth with Bilbo Baggins, Gandalf, and the dwarves. Dolby Atmos delivers a soundscape so realistic, you can practically feel the swoosh of an arrow flying by your face or the fiery breath of a dragon over your shoulder.” Academy Award winning trio Christopher Boyes, Michael Hedges, and Michael Semanick (The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King) return to helm the sound mix with Academy Award winning rerecording mixer Gary Summers and acclaimed rerecording mixer Lake, who recently completed the Dolby Atmos version at Park Road Post Production in New Zealand. “We can’t wait to see what Peter Jackson and his masterful sound team do with the expanded capabilities of Dolby Atmos for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug,” said Doug Darrow, senior vice president, cinema, Dolby Laboratories. “Dolby Atmos is a paradigm shift from traditional channel-based approaches like 5.1, 7.1, and 11.1 as you are no longer just watching a movie, but experiencing it. I'm sure if they ever get into the theater business they might just do that.
