Dear fellow Film-Tech Forum Participants,

I think it is time to admit that 1) We are all nerds and 2) there was just a disruption in the nerd-force. I don't think this is the right category to talk about the new Star Wars trailer's content, but can we at least talk about the trailer release? I'm surprised nobody has started the thread yet!

30 theatres were going to get the trailer. Cool... for those 30 theatres. Do any of you work at those 30? If so, were people out of their minds over it? OR, did you get screwed when they decided to release the teaser online anyways? From what I heard about the AMC in Westminster (the only Colorado theater), the staff that got off at 2am were coming back in at 8am to watch the trailer when the keys unlocked.

Also, does anyone know when the rest of us can expect access to the trailer? Will is just be in the upcoming week's trailer packs?

Anything else notable about the Ground Level aspects of the trailer release?

I guess the days of wonder are long gone... George Lucas managed to destroy most of the hype with his lackluster prequels and his constant messing around with the existing movies with every new release. Star Wars jumped the shark or nuked the fridge quite a while ago.

Around here, those new Star Wars movies only create the slightest amount of buzz. I cannot imagine anybody buying a movie ticket just to see this god damn trailer.

Anyway, this new trailer is boring as hell. It's about 25% just black to start with. And what exactly should we get all excited about? Cross-shaped laser swords? Tie Fighters? X-Wings? A Millennium Falcon?

Lucas probably saw it coming and decided to sell it all off to Disney before there was nothing of value left. Maybe J.J. Abrams can give the franchise some new swing, but to get the world excited about Star Wars again, he needs to deliver one damn good movie.

I think you are underestimating the value of Star Wars.

If Abrams presents a good portion of "new" mixed in with a generous sampling of "classic" and tops it off with a killer story, it could be one of the biggest hit movies ever.

I think most people would agree that the biggest problem with the most recent 3 movies has been the lame storylines and the weak direction. Also, this upcoming movie will be into uncharted territory, so that should be a plus. With the last three, people knowing where the story was going to be going before even seeing the movie had to be a detriment.

1. None of the theaters that got the trailer have Film Tech members working there

2. Film Tech people don't give a poop about trailers running on YouTube - they'll wait to comment until they see it on the big screen where it belongs. (That'd be my situation.)

There are only two movies coming out in 2015 with any chance of opening bigger than Star Wars (Avengers 2 and Hunger Games 3.2). I'm guessing with the Disney marketing muscle, it opens to 165-175 million in the U.S..

I for one am very excited about the new Star Wars! No theaters near me had the trailer but I seen on a Star Wars site. Loved the new trailer and the openings scenes premise of the idea of a force sensitive StormTropper is really interesting. I liked the new 3 sided lightsaber as well.

Well, if it wasn't for Disney, who were heavily invested in George Lucas' IP already (think of all the Star Wars and Indiana Jones theme park attractions, some of which just recently got a makeover) and the considerable value of those other assets that came with the deal, like Industrial Light and Magic and Skywalker Sound, he would never have gotten $4B out of it. This trailer carries Abrams signature already. I'm not sure I do like it and it fits with Star Wars. It looks hectic and unnecessarily mystifying. Star Tr...Wars meets Lost... Then again, let's not judge a movie by its teaser trailer just yet, let's at least wait till the next trailer [Smile]

Loved the "alternate" trailers. Especially the lens flared one. It would be one big dick-sizing fest:

- Abrams: Mine got a bigger flare than yours.
- Lucas: Yeah, but mine got a double-length laser shaft with spikes, beat that.

It always felt like they wanted to fix part of the damage Jar Jar had done to the franchise, by making him look bad in Episode II. Although this character deserves an R-rated death, I don't think such a scene would make the movie a whole lot better. Maybe they still could fix it in the next movie but then have it directed by someone like Quentin Tarantino [Wink]

Or... alternatively, in a year or 10, Lucas could come back from retirement and bring us the THX remastered special editions for Episode I, II and III. Those WITHOUT Jar Jar, because back when they were shot, they couldn't be made without him, the technology simply wasn't available at the time.

There's actually such a version out there (it doesn't remove the character entirely, but makes it much more bearable), although it's not entirely endorsed by Lucasfilm (understatement of the year). It also hasn't been updated to the BluRay release.

The trailer is on this week's Deluxe trailer drive ... 2D and 3D versions and it isn't even encrypted!! (That part is kind of surprising, actually. But given it's Disney, maybe not as surprising since they don't seem to be as paranoid as other studios, what with opening keys a few days early the way they do.)

Finally completed my HFR testing, for the second time. Got to choose the 2D scope trailer and the 3D scope trailer to monitor the transition to 48 frame. Chose The Force Awakens as my 3D.
Just as Joe Redifer described it.
Watched it 8 times as this is how many HFR 3D capable houses I work with.
If I never see it again, I will be fine.
Unfortunately, the 2D selection was 50 Shades of Grey.
That was a bad choice. 9 & 1/2 Weeks revisited.

I finally got a chance to see this teaser on our screen a few nights ago. I watched it with a friend who is way more into Star Wars than I am. We cranked the sound up nice and loud.

I can honestly say I got chills when that familiar theme kicked in and the Millenium Falcon flew across the screen. Very obviously, this is just a teaser and it's impossible to tell much of anything about what's going to happen in the movie from it. But I thought it was totally cool.

I theorize that the title might change because it doesn't really make any sense. Why would the Force need to "awaken?" The Force was triumphant at the end of Episode VI, was it not? I mean, good prevailed and evil was vanquished, so what "awakening" is necessary?

So given those thoughts I have a feeling a new title might possibly emerge somewhere along the line.

My friend, well, he's in total Star Wars geek heaven.

An awakening of the force could be thought of in many different ways, my guess is that the force has been dormant for 30 years and Luke Skywalker is living in exile sort of like Yoda in the original trilogy. I figure that a team of Imperial leaders were frozen in carbonite and have been awakened. This would then awaken the force within Luke. The force must of been dormant and when in the presence of a powerful Jedi or Sith, one can really feel the force. That is just my guess.

I think the trailer really hit the spot. It is one of the better teasers that has come along in a long, long time. I think the movie will break enough records.

The Force isn't good or evil, it is the unseen power that some special people can harness. There is the light side (such as the Jedis) and the dark side (such as the Sith). The Sith, were defeated at the end of Return of the Jedi.

The title isn't going to change, and it makes sense in the context of the plot itself, which the plot is out there in various corners of the internet.

I dunno, it just sounds more like a catchphrase than a title. It sounds bland. Besides, if I was Disney I'd be loading up the internet with phony bait articles and titles and stuff just to keep people guessing.

I'm about as far from a Star Wars expert as you can get though, so I will wait and see like everyone else has to!

Just got goosebumps at the new trailer, it was amazing to hear and then see Chewy and Hans Solo at the end of it. The crashed Imperial ship was cool. This is going to be epic and maybe even haunting.

This trailer hasn't shown up on the trailmix drives yet, unless it's living under some goofy code name. I wonder if it will theatrical-debut with the new Avengers? That would make sense.

I'm probably one of the younger folks on here, being only 29. When I was growing up, my parents were pretty strict about what we could watch. I had seen less than 20 movies by the time I was a teenager, but Star Wars was one of the movies I could watch. I wore out so many copies of the original trilogy on VHS. Star Wars is just so strongly linked with my childhood that it was really like seeing my long lost friends. I absolutely cried happy tears when Han and Chewie came on screen. So excited!

Yes, when I was 11 I saw the 1997 Special Edition re-release, all three, in theaters.
