We just found a few headsets in storage for our box office window speakers. When plugged into the headphone jack, one worked beautifully then ended up like all the others: the microphone works so customers can hear us, but the speaker in the headset does not (we can't hear the customers). Anybody come across this problem? Know how to resolve it?

Scott,

It is very not likely that all of these headsets are bad.

What happened between the time the new one worked and when it stopped?

Can you access the terminals for the earphone and see if there is actually a signal there?

This sounds like the problem is elsewhere. Is there a circuit that mutes the customer's sound when not in use? Simply a noise gate that allows the talking to come through but keeps the traffic background out. If so it could be muting too much of the sound.

Be sure there is a signal there before discarding the headsets.

Check the actual headphone plug, it should be soldered with wires to the board, sometimes these wires or bad or the headset port is bad. If the port is bad its an easy replacement, if you still have a radioshack near you they sell it. If not you should be able to order from any electronics site online. Usually the port goes bad due to employees messing with it.

It's definitely not the headsets. They're brand-new, in-box. It seems more likely that the jacks have gone bad in the actual window mounted casing. If I were more savvy with a soldering iron, I'd replace them sometime; but I fear damaging the whole thing altogether and then having to shout at customers through the window.

If you can find a local electrician they should be able to fix it with no issue, they're pretty simple electronically.
