At my old theater, we recieved a fax from the home office with a picture of a marquee. They attached a nasty-gram stating that if anyone had a marquee that looked like this, then that theaters management would be in trouble! The marquee read: Erin Brockovich Screwed My Dog Skip!

Here in Maryland, one of our theatres had this on not one but TWO marquees. They didn't know

, but it was on the HUGE one facing the road and above the box office.

The movie "Blow" made for very interesting marquee sayings. At the time it was often preceeded by "Josie & The Pussycats".

I posted this somewhere in here a few years ago, but my favorite was Stop Or My Mom Will Shoot JFK. Of course, it wouldn't fit, so I had to put Mom Will Shoot JFK. I took great pride in that.

This one isn't a theater marquee, but a sign for a video store. The curious use of Handel Gothic and its tight letter spacing makes me wonder what kind of movies they offer for rent.

For those who understand French;

This marquee is In Geneva, Switzerland:

The First row is the name of theater; LE PLAZA
The second row is the theater's company brand name where I'm working: EUROPLEX CINEMAS
And the thrird row is the french title of the movie: "CATCH ME IF YOU CAN"

Have you ever seen a theater bulding running to catch a guy ? [Wink]

While only marquee in the loosest sense:

Pitney Bowes (the postage meter folks) had very big, red, neon letters of its name atop its factory. This was about 1/4 mile from and dominated the nighttime landscape for a good stretch of the I-95 corridor through Stamford CT. You could not miss it.

Some years ago for a couple of nights the "B" of the sign was not working. Clearly seen by all driving this busy stretch was:

"Pitney owes" [Eek!]

Needless to say the "B" was quickly repaired. [thumbsup]

I remember at one of the first theaters I worked at in the late 90s' as a projectionlist trainee, we had a guy who had to go out every Friday and change the title. One Friday in the summer of 99, he was on a vacation, so a custodian did it for him, and instead of putting up both the first and last title or a abrivating it, he only put the first titles on, so it said for a whole week "NOW PLAYING: SOUTH (Park) WILD (Wild West) STAR (WARS)". Needless to say, we got quite a lot of people coming in thinking we were also an adult theater and thought "South Wild Star" was a porno. Luckily it didn't hurt our reputation, but it just went to show how oblivious some people are. [Roll Eyes]

Back in the early 90's I worked at a GCC and became the Marquee change guy. Our Marquee was out by the road and we went through a period of a few weeks where somebody would rearrange the letters for the lines that were accessible without a ladder.

I don't remember many of the new titles but one that I do recall was that "The Cutting Edge" became "The Cunt Edge." I should have taken pictures or jotted some down because sometimes they were pretty creative.
