They appear to be carbon arc models; I've freeze-framed through it several times to try to see them better.
I got the 1981 laserdisc edition of this, on the Magnetic Video label (which later became Fox) for 40 cents at a Goodwill store- they thought it was a record! What's REALLY neat about this disc is the frame is completely unmatted, so you can see all sorts of stuff you're not supposed to be seeing at the bottom of the frame, like arms sticking out of the puppets and a couple weird parts where you can see these guys lying down on roll-around boards operating the Muppets!

Sounds like a 16mm print of The Abyss I once ran for a special outdoor showing. Since the movie was shot in Super35, clearly the lab just made a 1.33 print straight from it. The audience was laughing all through it every time the boom mics popped into the top of the picture and a grip was seeing picking his nose and the like at the bottom of the screen. Those effect water shots looked really nice with a "blue letterbox" to it. We had to get some cardboard boxes and "make an aperture" for the second show it was so bad.

So, we're not discussing the one seen at the beginning of the movie when they are seeing the premier? Or have I just lost my mind?It's been several years since I ran TMM. Maybe I need to?
