I'm curious as to what the viewers of this site use. Do you have a dialup modem with a free internet service provider (like Juno)? A dialup modem with an ISP like AOL? Cable modem? DSL connection? Anyone running multiple T1 lines into their home?

I have a dial up modem and two free providers, they are Goconnect and freeonline. I used to use AOL Australia but it was too expensive and actually slower than the free ones.

I use Earthlink but I don't use their software. I use IE 5 and Outlook 5 (Mac). I also use IE and Outlook on my Toshiba notebook when I travel.

Loading pages is usually trouble free, except when the hotels I stay at have crummy phone lines. (Common occurrence) Downloading files is a bitch sometimes, I often only get 2.5 kb/sec download speed.

I'd get DSL but I'm not home enough to use it. I'd be paying all that $$ and I'd only use it about 10 days out of the month.

PacBell DSL at work, nothing at home.

Ky and I use the same DSL. He does a lot of research on the web and is emailed graphic files regularly. I manage our website, so the speed is appriciated.

I use IE5.5 as my primary browser but I just downloaded Nestscape 6 and it is looking good.

When I go on the road, I use a dial-up service and I bitch and moan about how slow it is.

I used a free dial-up service for about a day and was driven nuts by the ads. I'll pay, I'll pay.

I mostly use a 2-way cable modem thru Comcast and Netscape Communicator 4.75. The cable modem does the job very quickly. If I'm at work it's usually a slow T1 .

It is AOL for me at the moment...it has the nice part about being available everywhere I go but as soon as Cable modems hit my neighborhood, I'll be gone...I have the oldest crappiest phone lines at home...I swear they are using morse code to send everything.

ATT roadrunner cable modem (2mbits/sec down and about 40-45 kbits/sec up) about $50 a month ($40 with cable) althought i did read that it might be reduced to 20 a month

At work, I have Internet II access, but I'm not sure if it is used in getting to film-tech. At least T1 speed is achieved, though, if it isn't. At home, I use a dial-up provider with a 28.8 modem.

Equipment: work: 933MHz Pentium 3 with 45G hard drive and 256M RAM (Windows 2000 Professional with Internet Explorer 5.5). home: 200MHz Pentium Pro with 8G hard drive and 64M RAM (Windows 98 with Internet Explorer 5.0).

I also frequently use Sun Sparcstation 10s that we have in the department (running Solaris, Sun's version of Unix), and Silicon Graphics machines running IRIX (Silicon Graphics version of UNIX). I use Netscape on the UNIX boxes.

At home I have a cable modem and use Netscape for web browsing. 700MHz PIII, 256MB RAM, 30GB HD, 19" monitor.

I don't know what the connection at work is, but it's decently fast, I guess I should ask. Running Netsacpe on a 433MHz Celeron, 64MB RAM, 10GB HD with a 17" monitor.

I actually do most of my posting from work.

For the moment, I'm stuck on the end of a dialup line and am suffering from "low-bandwidth disorder." I have an account with a surprisingly decent local ISP (widomaker.com)--dialup shell and PPP access for about $20/month. I signed up for 192k SDSL service from Flashcom (the DSL provider that people love to hate, but not as bad as Bell Titanic, I'm told), but it'll be at least a few more weeks until that gets installed. For mail and usenet, I ssh into a Linux box at my parents' house that's connected to the net via mediaone.net cable service (1.544M down/300k up - $40/month), which is where I run my web/mail/ftp servers (every ISP I've ever used has had mail server problems...I quickly learned that it was easier to run my own, which I've done since October '96 or so; since that time, I've had at least one *NIX box on the net full-time through various forms of connectivity).
My desktop hardware seems to change every few months; at the moment, it's a dual-processor Sun Sparc 20 workstation with 512mb RAM, 20" monitor, 2x 4gig drives, and a 4mm tape drive. A CD burner is on the "stuff to get" list. This hardware is about 4-5 years old, but was the best that money could buy at the time; performance is decent and this stuff is now fairly cheap on the used market (so mere mortals like me can get our hands on it...).

I use a V90 56 k modem and use Optus net isp which I find is very good and fast.I use IE.5.5 which suits me fine,I tried the latest Netscape but it kept crashing most times so I removed it.

I looked into DirectPC when I went the cable modem route. The thing I didn't like about DirectPC is that it still ties up your phone line (used for upstream) so you don't have a constant connection. At college I got used to being 'always on' so that was a big plus for the cable modem to me.

You also have to either go with one of their ISP's or find one of your own, so the DirectPC cost is on top of the ISP's cost.

Then again, it would be a great idea for people in more remote locations that need a broadband connection. As long as their was a local isp to use along with it.

Be careful on those one way connections. Sure they *may* give you fast download speeds, but remember you still use uplink for data correction while you download. I've found that Roadrunner seems to be the best cable system around, @ home second, and charter third....

I have two computers at home...
One is something of a dinosaur that I've had for over four years, pieced together by someone that knew what he was doing, and for the time was a great machine. Not so great now though... The other machine is a not-quite-new HP Pavilion.
Both use dial-up connections, the dinosaur has a 14.4 bps modem, the HP has a 28.8 bps modem. My ISP is a local provider - MidMaine Communications - very reliable, inexpensive, no time cap per month, etc etc...
Hey, it works for what I need it for, so I'm not going to complain.

At home I have an FttC line (Fiber to the Curb). Not cable and not DSL. I get 10 megebits per second up and down full duplex. Although the upload speed always seems a bit faster than the download speed for some reason. The company I am going through is called Wide Open West.

Right now I am leeching off of Film-Tech's dedicated T1 line since I am not at home. If the site seems slow, it is just because I am sucking up the bandwidth to download "stuff"

Here in the UK we are about 100 years behind the rest of the world. As there is no real competition in the telecoms market (there are multiple telco's, but the network belongs to British Telecom, although I believe this is set to change), cable/DSL is only really available in larger towns and cities. BT have their own system, which is available where I live, but it's seriously expensive. If I could get one of the cable companies I'd pay about 25% of what BT want for broadband internet, and get telephone and television for that cash! So for the time being I am on V.90 USR Modem at home, and V.90 on board on both laptops. All using one BT Internet account. The USR modem is one of those message types, it stores faxes and voicemail whilt the PC is off.

My setup has recently changed...

I'm still using Earthlink at home (dialup) but I have and Airport base now. Going wireless is the ONLY way! If the cable/phone comanies ever get off their fat arses and put in broadband service in my neighborhood I'd be all set!

I don't travel for a living anymore so I don't have to use crummy motel phone lines. It was a real pain, trying to connect sometimes.

At work, I'm using the college's network. (I think T-1). All I know is that there is an ethernet port in the wall of my office. I connect my iBook to it and make a couple of settings and it just works. I get about 120K of DL speed, (during low traffic times) so that's why I think it's a T-1.

I got tired of swapping the ethernet cable back and forth between my iBook and the PC in my office so I splurged and bought a Linksys ethernet router with a Wi-Fi port in it. I can get on the college's net with either computer now. In fact I can get a good signal all the way out to the stage in the auditorium. It's easy to get hooked on wireless!

I live fairly close to Joe (hi, Joe!) so I also have Optimum from Cablevision. I had @Home, but they have since died.

If you are on the outside edge of an area that has some kind of high speed access, there was an interesting solution described in an article I read recently. If you have a "line of sight" to someone who can get a high speed line, you may be able to use one of those wireless PCMCIA systems usually used for wireless connections to laptops around the home or office. In the article, a guy who wanted high speed went to his "neighbor" (who lived about seven miles away!) and asked him to have a cable modem installed normally. He hooked up a regular router/NAT to the incomming cable. He then bought one of those wireless systems, but used highly directional antennas, mounted outside. The neighbor provides the "base station" in exchange for free internet access.

The guy who wrote the article thought it might work up to about 10 miles. It cost about $1000 for everything, which is a bit steep, but I know I would probably go for it because I'm on a lot and dial-up is just too slow.

now runing Quest DSL ~$40 a month, on a pentium III 650Mhz
have 5 computers on it now and only goes down durring an outage or a cable cut(thanks to the cat). one slight drawback, can no longer voice chat or send files on messenger services. oh well, its great for downloads.

AT&T proudly says cable modem will be here "No later than the end of 2003!!". Qwest will not commit to providing DSL in this area, ever. I looked into 2-way satellite, but it supposedly can't do VPN, is very expensive, requires a 36" dish.

So I use dialup. ISP is Earthlink.

I'm now on cablemodem. I use Comcast. I will give them credit when Excite went kablooie...we never lost service. They paid for a 3-month hold over so we wouldn't loose service...then started their own network...we got e-mail, phone and snail mail telling us about the change, when it would happen, what we should do if a problem occured and all that....

They did the switch over for us in the wee hours of the morning (and told us when it would happen).

The following day when I logged on and had forgotten about the switch over...the only thing that I noticed out of the whole affair was a tremendous speed INCREASE.

Connection update:

Now using ATT Broadband Cable modem, was @Home before they went belly up. Download speeds are throttled to 1.5Mb (approx T-1 speed) and 128K upstream. LAN connected through a Linksys broadband router, all computers get decent bandwith up and down. Have noticed some latency with AT&T's DNS servers, now running my own DNS server which is pointed to both AT&T's and SWBell's DNS servers, so DNS is no longer a problem.

So I asked my son and he told me that I have an ISP Connection at home (In NYC) and a dial up modem telephone connection in Newport RI. In my office I have ISP Connector also. And...this is no joke.

Just to add a one point to Pete's post: British Telecom currently charges £200 per month for an 'always on' broadband connection, and even then you can only have it if your existing 'phone line is served by one of the 20% of exchanges that support it. This compares with a number of ISPs who offer unmetered modem access for around £15 per month. As Pete points out, you can get broadband on the back of a cable TV connection but those are only available in large urban areas. In more rural areas you'll be lucky to get a modem to connect at 28k.

With these costs it's hardly surprising that only large business and state agencies that have broadband. Even small businesses which rely quite heavily on the Internet still use modems. What makes things even worse is that BT are saying that they do not intend to convert any further exchanges because the takeup rate for broadband is not high enough to justify the investment! Chicken and egg situation if you ask me...

At home and our drive-in (one and the same), ISDN. We're too far in the boonies for DSL or cable. This works great, considering the alternative is dialup. We have 5 networked computers hooked up to it through a router (kids!). The only problem is occasional router lock-ups, which I haven't figured out yet.

At the indoor, AT&T cable modem.... gotta have at least cable or DSL speed if you're processing plastic.

Time Warner cable modem for me. 1Ghz Athlon/20G HD/ 256Mb Ram
I use IE 6.0 at home, I.E 5.0 at work. Work connection is 56k dialup on a Pentium 133Mhz with a 2Gig HD. Yes, P133 with 2.Gig. If I did carbon dating, this tank would probably span back 500k years... or at lest that's what she feels like anyway...

Cable modem.. the way to go IMO. I simply wish the rates would drop a little... I think overall Broadband acccess would benefit if the subscription rates would drop by %25 or so... Dialup rates would then drop as well, allowing more folks who can't afford ANY connection (Dialup or other) to finally get online..

Then again, who am I?

As for me, when in Midland I've got 'stupid dial-up'. Do tech work for an ISP and am still stuck with dial-up. Why is my dial-up stupid? Because I'm lucky if I can get 21,200bps. In fact I celebrate when I get such blazing speeds. Just too many taps on my line. Currently I'm debating setting up a wireless ethernet bridge direct to the ISP. That'll fix'er good.

Remember David, you can only get your high download speeds from cable modem if your neighbors who are also in your pool are not also downloading all of their porn at the same time you are (this is the only reason the internet exists. Right?). So if your porn is coming down too slow for you, just go next door and beat up the person on the computer.

At work we ore on Janet (the Joint Academic Network) via a Cisco router and an E1 line. Until earlier this year, this was from Telewest, and presented as unbalanced G703 on a pair of 75 Ohm BNCs, then through a converter to X21 into the router. No a different comms company, can't remember who at the moment, presented as X21, direct into the router.

At home Pipex ADSL, 512 down 256 up, via a Netgear RO318 router and Eicon 2430SE ADSL modem.

IE6 most of the time at both places.

Because I use the internet a lot during business hours, I have found cable modems to be the best because it allows me to go on line without tying up my business phone line. I use Road Runner and I am very pleased with their service.

Up until about a few weeks ago I was using a DSL connection. At times I was downloading things at about 1.2 MB/Sec. I recently moved, now I am using a dial up connection.

I can't wait till my new place is ready... I will then get DSL again...

Jason, I was just kidding. AT&T cable modem svc. rocks. The idea with the "IT SUCKS" sign is to discourage all my neighbors from also signing up for cable modem. That way I can have all that bandwidth to myself! I never was very good at sharing.

Just to be clear, I don't really have such a sign in my yard either!

Usually DSLReport's tests are pretty reliable. I just got 458kbps down and 815kbps up. Which means I'm still in my office in (the basement of) the engineering building. Time to go home.

Your link already has the result built into it. You have to cut the URL after "...speedtests/" and hit the link on the page to run the tests. I knew my speed sounded too good to be true.

Your URL has a result built in of 5687kbps for download and 5819kbps for upload. That was hard to believe.

My actual result is 909kbps (110.9KB/sec transfer) and upload of 737 kbps. I've actually gotten better - I've seen transfers of up to about 175KB/sec, but this sounds about right.

I'm stuck using dial-up as DSL and cable are not available in my area. We're 2 miles away from being able to get it [Roll Eyes] . But for dial-up, it isn't so bad. We had a local service called Hyperaction, but they were bought out by QX.net based in Lexington.

We used to use DirecWay (formerly known as DirecPC), and overall did pretty good. We started out having the one-way satellite, but eventually upgraded to two-way, so no modem was needed. Averaged around 120 kb/sec, which is great compared to 5 kb/sec (if we're lucky). But it was too expensive to keep, and plus there was like a limit of something like 150 MB/hour. If you broke that, you would run at the speed of dial-up (around 5 KB/sec) for 30 minute or an hour [Roll Eyes]

I think I read somewhere that Governor Fletcher is looking to have all of Kentucky have access to broadband by the year 2006 (or was it 2007?), but I guess we'll see.

I have a new laptop with a wireless g thingy in it. I don't want a long term contract for service at my home so I will be using it at the Library and Starbucks, Borders and the like in my area. It's teeny tiny.

A note to people who may be a few miles out of range of higher speed internet...

I'll have to do some more research and find a link of a person who did some contracting work for Apple. He was able to "connect" using various types of wireless internet; then placing an external (very tight focused) directional antanae which was aimed at a different building a few miles away. One of the examples he used in his site was that he would use places such as churches which had (bell) towers. He would simply offer the church to split the cost of using the internet connection.

The one single downside was the cost of set-up; which was typically a minimum of $400-500 for the transmission equipment alone.

Another reminder to people who use either always on connections or wireless connections; is to invest as much as ones budget will allow in all types of internet security. Its interesting that even computer experts will attempt to get away with cutting corners on internet security.

My Qwest DSL has been sucking major ass lately, I was very tempted to change services because they were offering me to have someone to come and figure out the problem for a fee of $100. [Roll Eyes] Then for some reason when I did some adjusting from different phone/power jacks my DSL came back up. Hopefully this will be the last of my internet troubles. [Smile]

Well, I was wrong that my DSL wouldn't have any more problems. It's still acting up every now and then. Don, thanks for the heads up but I'm changing my ISP anyway... TO CABLE BABY! The good stuff. [Big Grin] I hate how my IP address keeps changing and yes I've tried every possible way to forward the IPs but I'm not going to spend $30 for tech support to let them tell me something I already know how to do. They probably have some stupid system detector to keep me from doing it myself.

I have cable at home; you're right Jen, cable is definitely the way to go!

Unfortuantely down here at school, I have to deal with a very annoying Broadband connection. Its always been painfully slow, and not always reliable. My best friend used to go to a tech school and he had a ridiculously fast T1 connection that I was always very jealous of!

I have cable at home now, DSL at my day job -- slower than the cable, even though they're supposed to both be the same speed -- and still clunking along with dialup at the theatre. I have that "propel accellerator" installed on the dialup account and it makes film-tech load just about as fast as the damn DSL does.

I could have been wrong in the termonology...though I do remember him saying that's what it was. I'll have to ask. All I remember is that he was able to download at amazing speeds, and I was jealous!

For my home setup, I've had a DSL connection through SBC for about five years. It seems to work fine for the most part. SBC has recently been upping the download and upload bitrates for customers to get more competitive since a number of cable carriers in places like Oklahoma City have been offering really huge download rates (some connections up to 4Mbit/sec).

Our office connection is a wireless broadband setup. Bandwidth is pretty decent (around 700k to 1Mb per second upstream and downstream), but there is a latency lag of around 150 to 200ms. That makes it pretty useless if you want to do things like Internet gaming. We have this kind of setup since we're just outside the service range for DSL. These kind of setups can be problematic. The connection is dependent on line of sight with the ISP tower or a relay anntenae. And the connection can be stomped with interference. We had no connection for a couple days last week because of some kind of interference problem back at the ISP. No telling what caused it (they think folks at Fort Sill were running something that jammed them).

An aside, maybe this might just be my perception, but overall I think Internet speed nationwide is slower. It seems like everyone has some kind of gripe about lag time. I would not be surprised if that is the case. The internet is completely infected with denial of service attacks and trillions of pieces of spam filling mailboxes every freaking day. The ISPs themselves share some blame in this for their lassie-faire attitude toward malware-infected e-mail and spam. The ISPs are losing lots of bandwidth and money for a problem they could largely solve themselves. If they run active anti-virus filtering that automatically deletes any malware infected e-mail coming through their servers that would free up a lot of wasted bandwidth. You wouldn't have so many PCs being infected with worms and being turned into bots that vomit out spam or run DOS attacks.

Think of it as being a type of caller identification for the internet. This way there would be no practical way of forging an IP address. Think of the many other advantages this will have. Theres a probability that this will be available sometime in late 2006.

Other goodies to look for in the near future:

Pentium Five; otherwise known as five squared. Never guess what the entry level clock speed is? Can you say 5ghz? The range of spped should top out around 8ghz. Entry level systems should start out at about 2k. Most systems will come standard with a variation of RAID either mirrored or non mirrored versions available. In the box also look for options of: between 4-8 in chips, liquid cooling, 512 graphics card w/ twin fans.

In other computer news: Longhorn OS soon to be renamed. Present program takes up almost 5gig of space. Can't wait to see how big the SP1 will be.

Still on Road Runner cable at home, and even though they've supposedly increased the bandwidth, some times of day it is quite slow. I suspect a few "power users" in the neighborhood.

As much as I would like to see this happen, I have strong doubts it will. Why? The amoral dirtbags in the direct marketing industry already polluted the "Can Spam" act and made it into the "You Can Spam" act. Through the same act, they made emerging IP caller ID technologies being developed by Yahoo, Microsoft and a number of others basically illegal. Considering Intel cancelled the 4GHz Pentium IV because of heat problems (the 3.8GHz unit already gets as hot as an electric iron) it is extremely doubtful the "Pentium V" chip will debut at any speed near 5GHz.

Near term, Intel will roll out their 600-class numbered Pentium IV chips with 2MB of L2 cache late winter/early spring 2005. Around summertime, those "P5" named chips will appear. They're about 10 years overdue on this, IMHO. For the longest time the only reason for any user to have a dual processor box was to run Adobe Photoshop or some 3D rendering application faster. Now that the speed curve for CPUs is pointing now toward parallel processors (instead of making one CPU faster and hotter) it might create some new directions in computer design.

i don't know why, but a couple months ago i just stopped getting spam. i used to get maybe 10-25 a day in both my accounts (yahoo and ythis), then it stopped with no action on my part. now i get maybe one every couple days. couldn't be happier.

Qwest DSL 640 kb download. They have started deploying 1.2 meg, but we seem to be at the wrong end of the line and can only get 640. Someday Comcast will allow us to use the ISP of our choice (instead of MSN) and we will dump Qwest entirely. With cell phones (my wife and I each have one - Verizon), who needs Qwest?

Actually there are plenty of 4ghz Pentium 4's out there. I operate an Alienware ALX with one- backed up with both liquid cooling and extra fans. My alienware has well over 1tb of internal stored data and is used as more than a gaming console- actually does double duty as a business backup. It also has well over 1,500 logged user hours with zero problems of any kind. I also know several people who have similar models with no problems with theirs either. In a message group with almost one thousand users only two have experienced any problems. The problems were documented as: placing the tower in too tight of an enclosure, and also one managed to have a v-spike slip through. If you want I can also provide links to the people who build these units at the Alienware headquarters in Florida. One can also have an Alienware custom built for them for under 5k. Dell should have their version of the 4ghz out any day now- probably in their 8400, xps gen4, and also some of their other business lines.

Yes all of the higher end P4's do give off plenty of heat, but definately not more than any well built system should be able to deal with. Its usually a case of poor design- usually found in scratch built systems. If one has the proper amount of ventilation along with a few other common sense issue; then it should never be a problem. In terms of heat- it does get a bit warm but if done pepperly no damage should ever occur. Its not like we're talking about enough heat to melt the connections. Also be sure to note what the processing power is of some of the current laptops. Even with the limited breathing space the only time a laptop should run into any problems is due to an issue such as improper handling of the unit or placing it on something such as a carpet. Most heat related failures are due to: either poor design of the hardware (usually scratch build), mixing improper components, or usually the most common which would be user error (note carpet problem above).

On the other side of the issue- there are also other factors that contribute to overheating such as:

Poor placement of components.
Video card placing to much heat onto other components.

The new P5's are very much a reality. They exist at this very moment in a type of prototype phase, and have been extensively tested to work quite well. Its only a matter of time now before they hit the consumer market.

Using medium broadband ASDL at work and home 10MBPS works well considering I was on dial up and getting 21K , must say I am amazed at the amount of people around the globe who still only have access to dialup.

Good observation about the amount of people outside of the US that are still using dial up. Here in the US it will be almost completely phased out within the next two to three years; mostly due to the following issues:

Next generation systems arriving.
Next OS's, even outside of windows.
Updates will simply become too large to practically download (see example below).
Security issues.

The next Microsoft Windows operating system which presently goes under the name of Longhorn is just barely under the line of five gigs. With those volumes of data imagine how big the sp1 and sp2 would be; just a bit too large to download for most practical purposes.

You may be able to overclock a 3.x GHz Pentium 4 to the 4GHz mark or beyond. However, there are no 4GHz chips being offered "offically" by any major computer builder. All of the news I've read from places like Tom's Hardware Guide suggest the 4GHz P4 is still dead.

Alienware doesn't have any 4GHz models listed on their website. Their top of the line ALX desktops max out at 3.6GHz for Intel P4 and Xeon chips (the Area 51 versions; the Aurora SLI model uses the 2.6GHz AMD Athlon 64 FX-55).

As for Dell, their Dimension 8400 and XPS desktops max out with either the 3.8GHz P5 CPU or the 3.4GHz P5 extreme waste of money edition.

Intel is finally adding 64-bit capability to all its new processors, including the upcoming 6xx numbered series of Pentium 4 processors. 64-bit WindowsXP Professional is expected sometime in the Summer or by year's end. It will take longer for software developers to recompile their apps for 64-bit. The XeonDP, XeonMP and P4 6xx chips will be the last new single core processors Intel ships. Everything starts shifting to dual core (with significantly slower clock speeds) starting this summer.

What's the best e-mail clinet to use? I have nothing but trouble with Outlook and changed to Thunderbird 6 months ago which was great, now for sum reason it takes 10 minutes just to load, I have unistalled it and have reinstalled it 4 times and same problem?

I though I might give Eudora a squirt to see how it goes..any suggestion

You're probably using the 0.8 or 0.9 version. I had similar problems of lag with Thunderbird 0.9. Those problems disappeared when upgrading to Thunderbird 1.0.

With search engines and email , I also made the change to Firefox and Thunderbird email , one of the best changes I have ever made , they both work well.

Back to the basic with computers , I am using an old P111 733 pc and home, it has 512 memory and 2 x 80 gig hard drives running XP Pro , the old girl works really really well, at work we have 3 state of the art P4 PC's with 2.6 GHz CPU's all running windows XP Pro .

The PC's at work are so slow when compared to my old P111 , maybe new tech is not the best tech ????

For some strange reason Alienware has pulled the 4ghz from their line-up; most likely due to one of the following reasons: That the demand for the chips has exceeded the supply, or that the cost of the chip was so very excessive for a single tower set-up. The entry level price for an Alienware ALX with this type of processor costs well above 5k minimum; which is with things such as the bare minimum of chips, video card, hard drive config, etc... One could very easily spend well ver 10k without even touching the screen options.

I personally own an ALX with a 4ghz due to the following reasons: because of the business which I own, and also for the capabilites it has (even in excess of very extreme gaming). The tower has not been hardware modified at all since it has left the factory. The original factory settings still remain exactly as follows as stated under the catagory of view system information: Pentium 4 CPU, 3.99 GHz, 4.00GB RAM. Proof available if desired.

Alienware still offers their Intel P4 570J w/HT which runs in at 3.8, just as Mr H stated. The direct link to their 5500 tower is as follows; although its not quite an ALX.

I'm waiting for an official answer from Alienware as to when exactly the next availability of the next batch of 4ghz chips will be offered and I'll update the link.

As for the Dell 8400; did I misread or misunderstand the above quote about the waste of money thing? As far as operating systems goes (windows) its incredibly difficult to match that particular model. The 8400 is considered as the developers desktop computer- especially with things such as its RAID options.

The problems I was having with Outlook was it would lock up for no apparent reason and the lose any emails in the Inbox?, it used to be trouble free till I changed from 98SE to XP pro, I had a tech have a Cpt. Cook at it and reinstall it but it would have a spacko attack without any warning and for no real reason.
I will try the latest Thunderbird and see what it's like

For the last several months I've been actively watching the web sites for a number of computer builders, including both Dell and Alienware. I'm in the market for a new notebook PC as well as a replacement desktop for the office. I've never seen 4GHz chips being offered on any of the Dell and Alienware product lines. Overclocking is another issue. 4GHz has certainly been done in different demonstrations. I've just never seen a major vendor offer an overclocked 4GHz unit as a standard item covered by warranty.

I was just making a joke about the 3.4GHz P4 Extreme Edition offered on the Dell 8400 and XPS desktops. You're paying a premium of several hundred dollars for an extra megabyte of L2 cache. Yet various benchmarks from sources like PC Magazine or Tom's Hardware show there's not much of a boost gained from it.

The only currently available mainstream Intel processors that seem to be benefitting well from having 2MB of L2 cache are those Pentium M notebook CPUs. Please note, I don't consider Xeon CPUs to be "mainstream." The soon-to-be-released Pentium 4 6xx series of CPUs will have 2MB of L2 cache along with a few other features. It is doubtful they'll have the excessive price tags of those "extreme edition" P4 chips.

Anyway, I gotta think of some ISP related stuff to try to get back on the topic of this thread. I heard some kind of buzz a few days ago about a few people in congress suggesting ways how to encourage wireless broadband technologies and access to spread. The main suggestion was loosening up some of the regulatory processes to cut through governmental red tape.

To get back onto the topic of the thread as mentioned earlier...

Most of the next generation of internet is likely to be wireless; both indoor woriless connections, eventually evolving to outdoor very long range wireless. It will be difficult to ballance the speed of the connection versus the need for security.

To this present day, I've seen very few well secured wireless systems. Most of what I have seen is just gambling with ones computer or network security.

It interesting that most people don't have a problem with paying for the big budget hardware items, or even the software to back it up. Some people don't even have problems with paying a significant amount of change for internet connection even when most of the bandwidth is never really effectively used.

Then the same people seem to have a problem with spending money on internet security and other security methods needed to protect their computer. In some areas theres a type of crime trend where people break into houses and businesses. When the police arrive nothing really appears to be disturbed- only later to find out that their computer system has been compromised.
