What is your nomination for worst movie ever?
For years it seemed Plan 9 From Outer Space got top billing in this category but some of the crap released this year makes Plan 9 look like a blockbuster.

My vote has to go to, "Even Cowgirls Get the Blues"Vote for movie so bad its great is "I Drink Your Blood" absolutly great with the right crowd
Posted by Brad Miller (Member # 2) on 11-02-2000, 01:41 AM:
Jason, "I Drink Your Blood" definitely sucks big, big time. Damn funny though if you like absolutely godawful movies. For those not familiar with the movie, imagine a group of hippies traveling through a town when their van breaks down. They molest a girl and Grandpa gets real pissed about it, so he decides to take his shotgun and go take care of them. Of course, they slip him some drugs before he can finish threatening them and he is rendered useless. So the little grandson (imagine that ugly kid from "Disney's The Kid") gets mad and decides to inject blood from a rabied dog into their meat pies (apparently it is the only thing the bakery serves) and they all start foaming at the mouth and go crazy trying to kill everyone. The real funny part is they are all deathly afraid of water! Absolutely horrible. Definitely check it out!!!
My vote for worst movie of all time would have to go to "The Curse of the Queerwolf". This thing was technically shot quite poorly and the entire film was dubbed, even though the actors all spoke english. It's about a guy who picks up a girl at a club and during sex gets bit on his ass, only to find out that girl was actually a guy, and not just a guy...a queerwolf. This fellow who is now a full blown queerwolf, now turns into a raging homosexual whenever the full moon comes out. No film could possibly be any worse that this one. For a while, Blockbuster video even carried it. I'm not sure if they do anymore.
Hey Ian, you guys should book Queerwolf and see how it does!

For years, I thought "Liquid Sky" (1982) was the worst. I saw it again last night on video, and it's not so bad.I guess my personal pick for the worst movie from a big studio would be "Return Of The Fly" from TCF. Aack!
It's not scary at all, or did I just miss something?

Randy. Apparently, you still haven't seen Blair Witch 2. Definitely upholds the general rule regarding sequels being worse than the original. Not the worst movie ever made, but pretty damn close. I can't imagine anybody worth a damn enjoying it.------------------

I think all the peopel who thought Blair Wretch Project #1 was scarry were all mistaking NEAUSIA for being scared!By the looks of the floors on opening weekend I'd say there were a LOT of scared people!
Posted by Brad Miller (Member # 2) on 11-03-2000, 04:25 PM:
When I ran the first Blair Witch Project, I changed lenses for the show. Since the masking was moveable on 3 sides, I ran trailers in scope, then did a lens change to a NEW sized lens in flat (with newly set masking motor stop-points) that only brought in the side curtains a couple of feet and raised the top masking right to the ceiling. The black sides of the image were projected on the walls and the picture fit the newly sized 1.33 screen. Surprisingly, the picture wasn't too dim! I remember hearing about lots of compliments on the rig from patrons who had seen the movie at another theater where they could not mask off the sides and/or the screen was pathetically small. Size certainly wasn't an issue at this point and there was tons of vomit to prove it!Of course, a true academy print would've been better, but the next time I get another print in like that, I'm doing the same modification.
Posted by Randy Stankey (Member # 64) on 11-03-2000, 05:48 PM:
The BEST modification I can think of for the Blair Wretch would involve a 55 gallon drum, a gallon of gasoline and a match!

And the Imax films Tiger Child and Journey of Discovery

My vote for this years worst goes to Coyote Ugly. The first Sat. nite it brought about 250 customers, by the time it was over there were only about 50 left. Why would anybody make amovie about women dancing on a bar with their clothes on?
Posted by Dave Williams (Member # 299) on 11-03-2000, 10:29 PM:
First off, I happened to like Bottlefried Earth. I am a huge fan of bad B style science fiction, I grew up on the stuff. Blair Witch wasn't far off from that either, and I enjoyed it for what it was. I think you have to accept things for what they are and not try to force every movie to win an academy award.NOW to my choice for worst film ever.
.... IDLE HANDS... This is the hands down winner. This film actually pissed me off, and that has NEVER happened before. It was so formulaic, and it was almost a drop dead copy of Evil Dead. Just a bad copy of evil dead. I dare you to find a worse movie than this Idle Hands crap.

How about "Cemetery Man"? It's an oddball Italian film from a few years ago. I'm sure it's not the worst ever, but it certainly isn't all that far off. Cool poster, really, really bad movie. Then again, whoever thought it was possible to make a good love story starring dead people should be shot.
Posted by Dwayne Caldwell (Member # 417) on 11-04-2000, 01:09 AM:
I liked the detective from The Cemetery Man. The one who would grossly overlook or misinterrupt the painfully obvious clues that Rupert Everett's character was the killer. But that ending's meaning was kinda of lost on me."There's an armed man running around here. You've got a gun! That's good. Now you can defend yourself."

In the years I've worked in this industry, I have had the misfortune to exhibit some of the biggest pieces of crap imaginable-
Fresh Horses with Molly Ringworm-just pretentious junk
Half Baked-the most irresponsible film ever made. How a pro-drug film could be released three years ago is beyond me.
But I still think the worst film ever is Caddyshack 2. Talk about disgracing one of the funniest films of all time-I'd still like to know how this happened.

Posted by Mark Lensenmayer (Member # 134) on 11-04-2000, 09:07 PM:
Worst film I have ever seen is from the legendary K. Gordon Murray, and it is the Mexican Film Classic, LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD. It has some of the worst dubbing, the worst singing (Little Red Riding Hood sounds like a Wagnarian soprano!), and the single worst costume and performance in history by the Wolf. NAFTA caused this to be withdrawn from many outlets, certainly for the betterment of humanity.Runners up would have to be RABBIT TEST, the humorless comedy by Joan Rivers about a pregnant man (Billy Crystal), and the horrible comedy by Dan Ackroyd "Nothing But Trouble", with Chevy Chase, Ackroyd, Demi Moore, and John Candy.
BATTLEFIELD EARTH is profoundly bad, but it seems to glory in its badness. Definitely one of the funniest films of this or any other year. And if that doesn't prove my leverage, I'll just report you to the home office.

Dead Alive is a very funny and original film by Peter Jackson(Heavenly Creatures, The Frighteners, and the upcoming Lord of the Rings). While very gory, it shows a sense of style not seen in 99% of the cookie-cutter horror movie garbage out there.
And Grease??? While not my favorite film, it's stood the test of time well enough to do very well in it's rerelease two and a half years ago.

I am however surprised at some of the listed movies. Idle Hands? yes was a copy of evil dead 2 but found it amusing none the less. I enjoyed the original Blair Witch but the sequel BLEW! so all in all there is no accounting for taste.------------------

Rick,What exactly does a "booth certifier" do? Do you certify that projection equipment is setup properly and such? I wish you'd come here to Huntsville, AL and DECERTIFY
all of the auditoriums at Regal Hollywood 18 (numbers 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16) and Regal Madison Square 12 (numbers 3, 4, 5, 6, 9, 10, 11, 12) that have 1.85:1-only screens with no adjustable masking that show scope with aperture plates that cut 23 percent of the image off on the sides!

Evans:My next article for Kodak Cinema Notes (December 2000 issue, H-50-57) is about "Caring About Composition". I urge theatre designers to avoid "one size fits all" screens, and the misguided idea of common width projection for "scope" and "flat" just to fill the front wall with a big image, without regard for quality.
I also take the opportunity to remind projectionists of the need to use the SMPTE 35-PA (RP 40) test film to verify their image size, and avoid showing soundtrack or perf images on the screen or masking. Finally, a reminder of the need to check framing to avoid seeing microphone booms and bathing-suited actors in "nude" scenes.

Evans,
no I don't certify the theater or the house, I am 1 of 35 certifiers for Regal who has made a large commitment to improve it's presentation by getting it's better booth people to go out and train the managers how to handle films and upkeep thier equipment. it will be a daunting task as my district has 13 theaters for me to train thier people. but that's what my tag means.

John and Rick,Thanks for your responses. I really wish the practice of using "one size" screens would go away, and I really wish someone high enough up the chain at Regal would order the Huntsville, AL screens be fixed in their Huntsville theatres. It would require the addition of top masking in 12 auditoriums at Hollywood 18 and 8 auditoriums at Madison Square 12. It would require different lenses and aperture plates for scope. In fact, back in October of 1999, someone from Regal told the Huntsville Times that adjustable masking would soon be added to all the screens at Hollywood 18, but Regal has never made good on that promise. Is anyone from Regal Cinemas upper management reading these forums? On my theatre ratings on my site, this causes both Regal theatres in Huntsville to get a 7.5 point deduction from the rating they would normally have.
In their current state, these Huntsville Regal theatres (formerly Cobb) are unacceptable and are a disgrace to the motion picture industry. That's my opinion, although I'll be the first to praise Regal if the screens are fixed to support both ratios properly.
What's really sad is that Regal recently installed stadium seating at both locations and digital sound in all auditoriums of one of the theatres, and left the unadjustable screens as they were. In my opinion, the screens should have been the top priority.

Money is a big issue right now. The term "digital sound" on the marquee brings in people. The term "moveable masking" on the marquee doesn't. I doubt those theaters will ever be corrected, regardless of company. You need to move!

I well aware of the lack of "artistic awareness" by the general public when it comes to using the proper aspect ratio to maintain composition. My wife practically refuses to watch a DVD letterboxed presentation of a 2.39:1 "scope" film, preferring a "pan-and-scan" VHS version that fills the screen with the "bigger" 1.33:1 aspect ratio.

IMHO, it is easier to justify pan-n-scan video versions of films for home viewing than it is to justify commercial theatres with "fixed-ratio" screens, though.
Watching a movie at home on a television screen is necessarily a "compromise" situation. It is a very different environment from a theatre and serves a different purpose. Something must necessarily be compromised, either scale or composition. Some films can look pretty good in full-frame TV transfers, while others are totally butchered. It just depends on the film and the telecine operator.
On the other hand, there's really no excuse for a commercial theatre, which is a purpose-built structure supposedly designed by knowledgeable professionals, to not properly accommodate the formats that are expected to be shown in it. Top masking might be acceptible in an older theatre where widening an existing pre-widescreen procenium cannot easily be widened, but is similarly silly for a newly built theatre.
I would also argue that all theatres should be capable of showing flat/Academy and flat/1.66 titles properly, as well, but I would be in a minority there...

There was a movie in the late 1970s; I remember the name as "Funny Car Summer", but that title isn't in imdb, so I must have it wrong. It was some nonsense about racing hot-rods. I was in grade school, and had the most exciting trailer -- lots of great looking car crashes. It was all we could talk about until finally it was released. Then we all made our parents take us to see it, and all we could talk about the next day was how much it sucked. They had put every exciting frame of footage into the trailer. Pretty bad when a 9 year old walks out of an action movie thinking, "What a ripoff." Sheesh!

for the worst movie of all time there are three that come to mind, First being Crash Course with Jay Leno and Pat Morita playing "gritty Detroit Detectives" total crap, second would be Slums of Beverly Hills, I remember when we got that, and sitting through the run down I thought I was gonna vomit, I wanted to walk out and get a refund, but I didn't pay and I couldn't leave, it was torture. And second is called Death Valley, I don't really remember much about it, it was made in 1981 when I was 1 year old, but I saw it a few months ago on a movie channel at a hotel I was staying at, and me and my girlfriend just starred at the TV for like 2 hours totally confused as to what the hell we were watching, it was so bad I want to see it again, but have no idea where to find it, even blockbuster doesn't have it

Worst movie? Hard call - there are SO many! I'm not sure I would even attempt this without breaking it down slightly into 1) So bad it's good/funny/entertaining and 2) so bad it's painful to watch more than the opening credits. The former category can be a huge source of entertainment! I think that the Ed Wood films certainly belong here. Plan 9 IS a fun movie without question, so it's not 'bad' as such.
A few come to mind that are hysterically funnny:
Squirm - an early 80's horror effort about a power line which falls during a storm and mutates worms...I screened a 16MM print of this to some friends a couple of years back. We laughed so hard and so frequently that for humour value alone it outstrips many 'straight' comedies. Logic, story and continuity errors that have to be seen to be believed.
How To Make an American Quilt - I can't believe that anyone is capable of watching this without convulsing with laughter. What were they thinking? Great entertainment for all the wrong reasons. I screened this for the owner of a theatre on his 50th birthday and he was pretty much howling with laughter throughout.
Wide Sargasso Sea - Full of totally inane dialogue and definitely from the Zalman King school of directing. It's set in Jamaica and everytime one of the English settlers gets slightly challenged in a conversation, his standard comeback is, 'But this is not England...I think I'll go for a walk in the garden!'. This piece of dialogue recurs about 5 times throughout the film. By the time he's about to say it the second and third time you're already doubled over on the floor. Makes an excellent double with the aforementioned 'Quilt'.
On the 'movies that are so bad they're BAD' front, it's hard to go past, 'Bloodsucking Freaks' (aka 'The Incredible Torture Show'). This is reprehensible, offensive AND boring. My hatred for this film is almost without peer. I could mention films by Herschell Gordon Lewis but I suspect even these have some camp value and could fit into the first category as well. They were popular as Z-grade drive-in fare in the 1960's.
And films that I dislike immensely that are VASTLY overrated?
The Piano, without question. I can't stand this! The most torturous 7 reels I ever sat through.
Before I close this entry I should make special mention of Australian films, as they are such a rich source of untapped schlock. They are uniquely articulate in bringing 'awful' to a whole new level. I'm referring, of course, not to the ones that don't make it overseas, but to the ones that don't even make it on screens HERE. Trust me, you don't want to know!

"What Do You Say to a Naked Lady" was pretty bad.It was a '60s (or maybe '70s) Candid Camera big-screener that foreshadowed "too hot for TV" videos. They basically did the Candid Camera routine, but with foul language and nudity. It was rated X. When I was working at my theatre (before buying it) the owners actually brought this film in just because it was one of their favorites!!
It had some legit scenes, mixed in with others that were supposed to be "people being themselves" but were clearly staged...you could tell by the bad acting.

(i) On the masking/matte issue: I would much rather have prints with 1.33 masked into a 1.85 matte, a la 'Blair Witch' and 'Into the Arms of Strangers' than have cinemas show a proper 1.33 frame cropped to 1.85.As for the worst films ever made...
'Ma Vie Sexuelle'
'Dracula A.D. 1972'
'Photographing Fairies'
'The Ice Storm' (known as The Shite Storm in our projection box)
'Death Line'
'Days of Thunder'
'Mighty Aphrodite'
But THE worst film of all time for me has to be 'Nelson - The Life Story of Britain's Immortal Naval Hero' (Immortal? Didn't they realise that he got shot?!). It's a silent from 1917 I had to watch as a student. The idea was WWI propaganda (the message being that we kicked their butts at Trafalgar, ergo we can do it again) and it's got every gruesome cliche you can think of. You just KNOW that the intertitle 'Kiss me Hardy' will eventually flash up, and sure enough... Another highlight is Nelson in hand to hand combat with a polar bear during his early career exploring the Arctic. The animal in question is quite obviously an actor in a furry costume, and seeing the scene at 24fps makes it even funnier.

Death Race 2000 was campy fun from the Roger Corman camp(directed by the late Paul Bartel, I believe). I actually own it on DVD. Certainly not to be taken seriously, especially when the casting includes Mary Woronov(the principal from Rock n Roll High School, and one of Warhol's players from the 60's)and David "Kung Fu" Carradine. Just good dumb fun.

If something was wrong with it, I wasn't going to be the one to find out, lol. But as with anything, I am sure someone has opinions completely opposite that of my own...

"Meet Wally Sparks", one of the first "films" I ever built, gets my vote for worst.
"Baby Geniuses" also ranks up there for films that are... well, rank. We got that gem from our competition as a circuited print, and it had a nasty green-yellow scratch through most of the reels, which myself and the other projectionist who screened it found much more entertaining.
Is anybody here a fan of "Mystery Science Theater 3000"? That is one of my favorite TV shows of all time. I have seen hundreds of foul movies and enjoyed every minute of it thanks to that show!
Posted by Mark Gulbrandsen (Member # 72) on 02-28-2001, 09:48 AM:
I agree that Mystery Science Theater is great fun. They have a field day with the worst movies made and turn them into hysterically funny shows. I have one of the Laser Disks with "This Island Earth". Used to watch it regularly when it was on cable but don't know if it still broadcast on a regular basis anymore.

Someone please go demolish any Hollywood pull belonging to the guy who decided video games could make good movies.I'm thinking of Super Mario Bros., Street Fighter, and Mortal Kombat 2 (the first had one or two good fights and expensive enough FX to redeem it in a way).
It remains to be seen if Tomb Raider and Final Fantasy will continue the trend. I don't hold out much hope, but at least the FF movie will make for sweet eye candy...

Mystery Science Theater
My friends and I used to gather on Friday nights (in the 60s) and do our own MST. A local TV station had 50's bad scifi on at about 11pm every week. What fun to make fun of bad film. I still have a 1959 print of Angry Red Planet that I run on occasions like new years parties. Everyone gets to poke fun and make comments. It's one of the few times when talking during the movie is encouraged. I wish they had not cancelled production on MST------------------

At least Godzilla 2000 was ment to look cheezie. Not like the 1998 version that should have looked good instead of bad. What would have made the 98 version better would have been if they took the lips out of sync with the soundtrack. Then it would have fit in with all the other Godzilla films.
Posted by Randy Stankey (Member # 64) on 03-18-2001, 08:06 PM:
Godzilla 2000 was actually a TOHO picture, if I remember correct, wasn't it? (Meaning that the original company that made it, TOHO, made it to look cheesy on purpose.)

Godzilla 2000 was a Toho production. They did not actively TRY to make it look cheesy - instead they tried to make it look like, well, a Godzilla movie, which is a genre of cheeziness all its own. The reason the Godzilla franchise maintains its reputation for corny sci-fi is how seriously the creators of the film took the moderately ridiculous subject. Just listen to the commentary track on the US DVD and pay attention to the writer of the English language script expounding about the character dynamics and philosophical dilemmas underlying Godzilla 2000's story.
What astonishes most people about Godzilla 2000 was how much it cost: $11,000,000. The localization for US markets was $5,000,000. Any bozo could dress up in a monster suit and make a bad movie - Toho, however, elevates it to high art.

By far the worst movie I have ever seen and I even fell asleep during it because it was so stupid was "Jigsaw Man" which seemed to me to be a ripoff of a James Bond film...My friends that I saw it with tell me that I snored thru the middle hour of it. I haven't seen too many others in the theater that I thought were real turkeys. I've seen plenty of video turkeys, though. Enough of that..

What's funny about this thread is that most of these 'bad' movies have good qualities to some people. Personally, I enjoy the old cheesy movies that were considered 'bad' at the time but for some insane reason I enjoy them.I love "Plan 9...", for instance.
But Brad has inarguably the best example with "Queerwolf" though. There is nothing at all good about his one.
I'd have to put "Blair Witch" as a close second, but Queerwolf is the worst of of worst!

Worst Movie??? I was always told that one of my favorites happens to be one of the worst made in history. I truly love watching "HUDSON HAWK", because it just makes me laugh every time I watch it.But a list of my worst... Hmmmm...:
1. DUMB & DUMBER (fell asleep AND walked out)
2. SHOWGIRLS (Great story... BADDDD ACTING!)
3. BLACK & WHITE (Should be CUT & TRASH. Did they take what was on the 'cutting room' floor and make this
?"

Worst movies ever:I walked out on "Firewalker" with Chuck Norris and Louis Gossett, Jr.
Absolute worst might be "Queerwolf," but could also be "Monster Dog," a werewolf film with Alice Cooper. The movie was made in Spain and Cooper only participated because they told him it would never make it to this country. Alas, with the "miracle" of video ...
BTW--I love "Plan 9." The genius of Ed Wood is that your mind oscillates about 60 cycles of "This man is a genius/This man is an idiot" every minute. A most disconcerting viewing experience.

I am shocked to hear so many people have actually seen Curse of the Queerwolf!
That movie was actually shot on Super 8mm Ektachrome 160 (ugh!) silent stock and has got to be one of the worst films ever made technically. Still, for those who can enjoy bad filmmaking at it's worst, the film is pretty funny.

After further consideration I have a nominee for absolute worst film of all timeMOULIN ROUGE
Reason: Overdone sets, awful mishmash of former 70s hits, but worst of all is disorientating fast editing.
This film sets out to single-handedly ruin the genre of Musical Comedies and succeeds admirably.

'Cookoo Patrol' gets my vote. I'd never heard of it either, but it was shown a a meeting of a society mainly concerned with 9.5mm film in London a few years ago. It was not shown on 9.5mm, but an absolutely mint 35mm print, run on a DeVry portable. I wonder if this rubbish was ever released; it does have an entry on the IMDB. Maybe I saw the only print of it.

I don't know if "Operation Delta Force II: Mayday" ever saw time in a movie theater, but HBO aired this stinking piece of shit just the other night. This has some of the most laughably bad action sequences, terrible acting and terrible writing you could ever see in a would-be military thriller. To top it all off, the show rips off verbatim a bunch of submarine visual effects directly from "Crimson Tide"!! I mean, we are talking the same actual film clips. This is worse the the TV show "JAG" lifting jet flying shots out of "Top Gun" and "Flight of the Intruder"!
If Dale Dye is all about getting military stuff right, he should be ashamed of himself for participating in this one. Geez.
"The Giant Spider Invasion" has to be one of the worst movies I've ever seen. I saw that one when I was just a kid, and even then I thought it sucked. The only plus in it is you get to see the Skipper (Nate Hale) from "Gilligan's Island" get eaten by a giant spider. Well, actually, I remember it looked more like he was climbing into the giant spider's mouth. Some shots of the giant spider rampaging through town clearly revealed a four wheel vehicle underneath.

Truly bad films happen when otherwise talented people with high aspirations and plenty of budget end up cranking out something dreadfully bad. An example would be John Travolta's Battlefield Earth. Or The Adventures Of Pluto Nash (which I didn't see myself but I take it on faith that the box office numbers accurately reflect the film's badness quotient).

My worst list:
"She Devil" starring Roseanne
"Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead" starring Christina Applegate
"Dumb & Dumber"
"Blues Brothers 2000" Why the hell did they release this one in 1998 instead of 2000?? Why not call it Blues Brothers '98? Were they in that big of a hurry to watch it bomb? Anyhoo, the only thing I liked about this one was the music (just hit mute between the songs). I loved the original Blues Brothers(1980) with John Belushi.Just looking at the 1 sheet for "Queerwolf" tells me not to go there.
