Tim Johnson is probably the man to answer this best, since he has recently done so with his movie "6 Days in Roswell". It just hit the DVD market last month.

Well, you can always rent out the theatre, have them run your film, and then charge admission. There's a recent thread about this in the rec.arts.movies.production newsgroup. Some films have been successfully self-distributed ("Man With a Plan," for example, was very big in Vermont and was totally self-distributed by the director), but this can be expensive and risky.More likely, you'd try to show your print in as many festivals as possible and try to get the attention of a distributor, who would then hopefully try to make a deal with you.
If you just want to see your film on the big screen, try to make friends with a manager or projectionist at a local independent theatre where you are a regular customer. If they're film buffs and your material is interesting, they might run it after hours for you.
