Just thinking back to a thread from a couple of weeks ago titled Go Sooners I was wondering what exactly a Sooner was. All of the sports teams I know have nicknames of actual things eg Tigers, Demons, Bombers, Hawks etc.

Of course my favourite team is the Richmond Tigers.

It goes back to the land rush of Oklahoma, much like seen in "Far and Away". At the sound of a cannon, or gun, people would run to a plot of land to stake it as thier own. Some people "jumped the gun" and left before the cannon went off, they were known as Sooners, those that left at the sound of the cannon were known as Boomers.

I recall in "Far and Away" that a few of the "Sooners" were shot for "jumping the gun".

BTW, the "land rush" scenes in "Far and Away" did show how good 65mm negative printed onto 70mm print film can look with modern film stocks and lenses. The scenes had superbly sharp and grain-free images on a big screen.

John,

I never got the chance to see Far and Away in 70mm, but even the 35mm prints looked better than any other 35mm film, and I could only attribute that to the original image being filmed in 65mm. I can only imagine what the 70mm looked like, I can only imagine a bright, steady, beautiful image.

As far as the "sooners", most of them probably were killed, since that was cheating , but being part of Oklahoma's heritage, they hold tight to it

The schooner that is run out on the field after a OU touchdown is pulled by two ponies, named, none other than Boomer and Sooner.
