I am interested to know if anyone else has noticed some Wendy's locations serving a different kind of bun on their hamburgers. I noticed this for the first time in north Pueblo, Colorado. (Wait a minute, I'm speaking to movie people here.) Er, ahm..."in Pueblo, Colorado by the Cinemark Tinseltown". These buns (which would normally have a slight yellow tint to them) were "typical" white colored and tasted as if they were very much undercooked. The whole thing was doughey! (sp?...wait, is that even a word?) Needless to say this dry, doughey, underbaked "bun" not only tasted bad, but left me paying for it later when it digested...and I was only able to eat part of it!

Now I am back in the Dallas area and I stopped at a Wendy's in East Mesquite on I-30 and AGAIN found that super nasty hamburger bun in use. This time I couldn't even eat 1/4 of it it was so doughey and as before, was feeling it awhile later. Of course both of these instances were purchased at the drive through where as Joe Pesci puts it best: "they #()@! you at the drive through!"

So I decide to give ol' Dave Thomas one absolute final chance and stopped at a Wendy's in Rockwall, but went inside so I could launch it at the cook "just in case it had one of THOSE buns". Turns out it was the traditional Wendy's buns and all was fine.

So my question is, surely there is someone reading these forums (either a member or a lurker) that knows someone who works at a Wendy's. I would like to know what the deal is. Do the franchises have the choice of:
A. Traditional Wendy's bun
or
B. Super nasty underbaked bun of death?
I just wonder why some locations are using it, but know nothing about how the fast food franchises work.

When I worked the drive-in, I went to the local Holsum bakery to get our buns (it serviced most of upstate Vermont). McDonald's had a contract with them to produce the special yellow buns that they used. I was sometimes able to purchase these buns, but sometimes had to use the off-the-shelf Holsum buns. I still remember the racks and racks of yellow buns on brown bread trays.

I suspect Wendy's is having a supplier problem. Undercooked buns will have live yeast, which I can state with certainty from my earlier days of making homemade beer, is NOT something you want in your system. Eating active yeast can cause serious health problems in some people. If you get a bun like that just throw it away and eat only the meat patty, like I do. You could and should report the problem to Wendy's corporate. Dave won't answer though, he's retired and offshore fishing in Ft. Lauderdale.

Yes, Brad. I understand where you're coming from. For I was there all three times. And damn were those some nasty buns. I'm probably still harboring yeast in my system as I write this. Sometimes you get the good buns, sometimes you get the bad. It becomes a gamble. But then again, so is everything else in the fast food industry. I am inclined however to think that quality is something an owner should concern himself with, but I guess I'm being too naive. Anyway, I hope Dave is catching some big fish, because I doubt he'd want to eat one of his own burgers now.

If it means anything to anyone the best fast food I've ever had is from the A&W. I don't know if they're a national chain, but here there burgers actually look like the pictures. Full buns, fresh letuce. Oh its good.

What amazed me about Wendy's burgers is the size of them. My mom brought home some a few weeks ago, and I opened the bun for the heck of it, the thing was nearly as thin as a few dollar bills, and probably the width of a silver dollar. Of course Im exagerating a bit, but geez. Now I know why I dont buy burgers at McD's and places like that.

A&W has some of the best burgers money can buy. Of course the only one around me is up in the mountains, but it is worth the drive. They don't screw up your order like other places do. What's up with that? I order mine with cheese, mustard, light ketchup, and no onions. What do I get at most places? A plain burger with onions. Are you REQUIRED to be retarded to work at a fast food joint? I order them like that because that's the way I like them, and it also forces them to cook it fresh instead of giving you an "off the shelf" burger that they had sitting there waiting for you for two hours or more. This also works when you order "fries with no salt" but I rarely do that.

Why do restaurants assume that everybody prefers TONS of ketchup and mayonaise, mysterious special sauce (with "secret" ingredients), one drop of mustard, lettuce, tomato and onions on their burgers? I guess they also assume everybody is the same.

White Castle Hamburgers are the best. They are small (two bites) they are delicious. You can buy them by the dozen. You can eat them while you drive. They are not messey. They have passed the test of time, they have been around over 70 years. They go great with Coke or Pepsie or Gin. Say no more, send me a dozen.

Joe: Your post reminded me of the running gag in 'The Whole Nine Yards' about Canadians putting mayonaise on burgers. Bruce Willis and Mathew Perry have some hilarious moments with this theme in the film. And who could forget that wonderful exchange in 'Pulp Fiction' between Samuel L. Jackson and John Travolta about fast food?

But back to the topic at hand...whenever I go to Burger King I always ask for no ketchup or mayonaise, as they must then make up a fresh burger for you (plus I don't like those condiments at all) and same with Micky D's...I prefer Burger King though.

We don't have Wendy's in Australia! Well, that's not entirely true; there is a Wendy's chain but they only sell ice-cream, not burgers or any kind of other food as far as I know. It's more like a Baskin-Robbins stand.

They are the same type of burger. When I could eat bread, I used to love the Krystal bombers. Little square burgers with holes in them to let them cook faster and more evenly. Hot steamed buns. Yumm.

Never heard of Krystal burgers. While Castle burgers are about 2" squares,maybe 1/8th thick with little holes and are cooked with chopped onion. put Catsup and mustard, they are a taste delight. Great tasting Small bun.

McDonald's at Grant Park, right around me, always screws up the orders. I'm not going to get to go anymore, because of the head, but when they use to ask us to wait at the "Special Order Parking", She'd say "NO!" and the employee would dissapear.

I have to say that I like McDonald's French Fries. I also got to go driving to Arizona for Christmas a couple of years ago. We stopped at every McDonald's we saw, or so it seemed! I liked "JACK IN THE BOX" though. It was pretty good for a fast food joint.

I like A&W and I like Wendy's, but Wendy's food is in such small porportions. Their large, or "biggie" as it's called is only the size of a small McDonald's french fries package.

Hey Andrew, here's a really good tip for ya. Never, ever, ever anger anyone who is preparing your food. Be as polite as you can. Always wait until after you have it in your hands to complain. Yes, there are people who will do various "things" to your food if you tick them off while they are cooking it.

Yup! And if you complain and they offer to take your name down and give you a free meal the next time you visit, don't do it. They'll know it's you and they'll make sure to make special sauce just for you.

Also, always tip the pizza guy well when he/she delivers. They have your name and address and they do recognize the addresses that don't tip. I have a friend who works at Pizza Hut and trust me, they remember the good tippers and the bad tippers. The good tippers get their pizza deleivered first when the pizza guy gets sent out with multiple deliveries on one run.

My slant on Fast food. I am an expert on this, as I eat tons of it regularly.

Yesterday I went from Asheville to Knoxville, TN. It's a 110 mile drive. In Newport, TN, there is a very good Krystal drive-through that is worth the wait. Yummm.

I ate 10 of them. So did the guy that went with me. Yes, I still live today! White Castle cant hold a candle to Krystal. Krystal was here first, and will always be the best.

I dislike McDonalds. The meat is getting smaller and smaller. BK is OK, Wendy's is fine, except for the location near me that ripped me off at the drive-through twice...

Here's something that ticks me off. Look at the TV commercials. Notice how fine and good the item looks, then see what your order looks like. If we were smart, we would insist that what we get looks like the item in the pictures, or on TV.

Anybody eaten at Arby's lately? Ours only puts a sliver of meat on the roast beef sandwiches anymore. I bitched to Arby's International, but have gotten no answer, so I guess that I wont be eating there anymore. They suck.

Bruce you may or may not change your mind when you taste a White Castle. As I sit here writing this post, I have six, hot delicious White Castle Hamburgers, ready to eat. I will reserve my decision until I taste a Krystal Burger they sound like they are identical. I have never heard of Krystal Burgers until this post.

How widespread are they?

Krystal is the original. They've been here in the south since the 1930's. White Castle is the new kid in town. Around Nashville, I notice that most of the WC's are built very close to the existing Krystal locations.

One difference I noticed between the two is that WC adds catsup (ketchup) before you get them.

Krystals are at their best when the buns have soaked up some of the fried onion juice before the meat and cheese are added. Yuumm.

Here's something that can kill:

Get 6 cheese Krystals, a coke, and a bowl of chili. Eat it all and wait.
Your digestive system will stop shortly.

I love Krystals. There was one location here in town a few years ago, but it closed due to a lack of business. Not that the food was bad, they just opened the place in a bad location. Now if the build one by the interstate....near..my..house..Aaaahh.

If I recall correctly, White Castle was established in 1929. Here in the midwest, we call 'em "slyders" (take a guess why!) and they are not pre-ketchuped. I grew up on these things. Next time I head east, I'll keep an eye out for a Krystal.

Brad as to Your Question about Wendy's Buns. according to a Manager I know, Wendy's does not specify that a particular Vendor or Bun be used on thier products, they do suggest to a franchise the products that Wendy's was founded on but it is ultimately the franchises decesion to follow it to the T.

As to the question of wether A&W is a national Chain. Yes there are several of them in San Antonio and Houston Tx all in Malls now. There are several older style A&W places here in Austin, all are now Dan's or Fran's Hamburger stands. There was one in my Hometown of Corpus Christi that was gone before I was old enough to remember.

Now another goodie that started in my hometown and is rapidly expanding now is Whataburger. Used to be great hamburgers until they started using soy patties for thier meat.

A quick Krystal-related-projection-disaster-story. Back in the early 90's I was a projectionist for AMC's Phipps Plaza 12 in Atlanta. Opening night of Schindler's List went so well, the GM wanted to move it to a bigger house after the last show. So he (being the experienced one) suggested we carry it vertically to make it through the doorways. Without clamps on a loosely wound christie ring we proceeded to turn it vertically and then proceeded to watch it turn to linguini on the floor. 3:30am we decide to take a break from cutting & running to get take-out from Krystal, only to get back & find out one of my burgers had HALF A TOOTHPICK imbedded in the bun! Luckily I'm a ketchup freak and opened it up first to add some more red heaven before my first bite. Needless to say, even after receiving some apology letter & coupons from them, that was the end of a short Krystal eating era for me.

I would not be surprised to hear that White Castle and Krystal opened on the same day in 193?...

When I discovered Krystal in 1976 in Nashville, TN, there were lots of "Northeners" in college that told me about White Castles. There were none in Nashville until about 1986 or so. I've tried WC's at the Charlotte Pike location in Nashville and still prefer the Krystals.

Both restaurants have seen their share of problems over the last few years. Krystal has closed many older locations in Nashville and Atlanta.

I hope that I didn't seem to be "all knowing" in the food arena.

One thing though: If you go to the grocery store freezer and see pre-packaged Krystals and White Castles, LEAVE THEM THERE!! I've tried both and will wait until an actual restaurant comes back to town!

I'm glad that you cant see my "girth" in the picture on the left. Then you'd know how much I eat fast food!!

The nearest Krystal to me is 591 miles. I don't think I will be so I won't be able to taste on in the forseeable future.

I agree the frozen can not compare with the hot off the grill. I am glad that we both have the ability to buy a dozen and eat them up.

Courious how much do they charge per burger? White castle's are .42 cents each.

I'll tell you what I hate about Wendy's and it has nothing to do with the buns. I hate how when you walk inside and order a small chili and two potatoes to go they don't put a fork in the bag. Not only do they not put a fork in the bag, but they do not tell you that you will need to get a fork. I used to work concession at AMC, hard to believe I know, and we would direct the customers to the condiment stands after their order was complete. Why did we do this, you ask. We did it because people don't think about that stuff until they are about to eat. Same as the forks.

I know everyone is asking "why don't you just use the drive-thru where they give you a fork in the bag?" I happen to hate drive-thrus. I always hear people talk about how obesity is genetic and everyone is getting fat but it isn't there fault blah blah blah. The drive thru is the perfect example of the obesity problem today. Not only are we all eating at places like McDonalds, Jack in the Box, and Wendy's where most of their food is nearly or over 50% fat, but all of these people are too lazy to even get out of their cars when they buy this stuff.

We have a Dairy Queen here where they WON'T give you a fork (or anything else) in the bag unless you ask for it. Ketchup, mustard, fork, salt, pepper, whatever....you have to tell them exactly what you want and (with some of their people) how many of it you want. They say it cuts down on waste.

Here in Oklahoma, Wendy's uses the good stuff. Never really had a problem with their food.

I tried White Castle when I visited Chicago last fall. They taste good to me, but they're nothing I'd go bananas over.

As for requesting condiments be left off to ensure a fresh burger... It's really not necessary. You're getting a freshly-made burger no matter how you order it. The meat may not have been cooked right then (a rather long time ago, I was at a BK and saw the guy on the make line take a frozen cooked patty, put it on the bottom half of a bun, and nuke it. Not sure if they still do this, but I wouldn't be surprised), but regardless of the state of the meat patty, the burger isn't actually assembled until you order it. If they pre-made sandwiches, then the bread would soak up the juices and condiments and be all soggy.

When it comes to A&W... They are owned by Yum! Brands. Yum! Brands also owns Taco Bell, KFC, Long John Silver's, and Pizza Hut. Here in Oklahoma, we have a few half-n-half A&W/Long John Silver's stores.

I rarely eat at Wendys. We have a couple of them here. In Lawton, the burger joints rank as follows:
1. Wayne's Drive Inn (local business, about to open 2nd location)
2. Whataburger (3 locations in town)
3. Braums (4 locations in town)
4. Sonic Drive In (7 or 8 of them; they're everywhere!)

We have one A&W store on Fort Sill Blvd. I think there's an A&W/KFC combo store off I-44 in Burkburnett, TX (just across the Red River). They have some decent stuff. Still, they seem a bit different from my earliest memories of A&W. They don't have the drive in model like Waynes or Sonic. My mother worked at an A&W drive in one when she was in high school in New Mexico. I remember drinking a lot of A&W Root Beer when I was a kid. That location got changed over to a Sonic a long time ago.

I don't eat burgers very often though. My cholesterol is a tad bit high for me to make any habit out of eating burgers and fries. More often I'll visit a Subway or Quiznos when going the fast food route.

Well Brad, in answer to your query, I, unfortunatley, worked at a Wendys not too far from my house. When I read your post, I was like, WOW. Anyway, the buns were sort of doughy as well, but, not quite as bad. But, luckily, I don't work there anymore.

The buns that were delivered were from an outside bakery and were in a Wendys plastic wrap bag. Anyway, if you have any other questions to ask me, feel free to do so. I can answer them as good as I can. [Smile]

I went to a Wendy's the other day to check it out. I got two burgers. Both of them were cold (one of them was a little warm on the side) and both looked like they had been sat on.
I made the round to the drivethru window again and returned the burgers for a cash refund. Afterwards, I looked at the website to see if there is a complaint form somewhere. Not that I really cared, but I thought if I complained, I would maybe get a voucher for $10 or something like that. You can see, I have lived in California for three years and learned.
But there was no email, only an address and a phone number in Ohio. Writing a letter or talking to a trained monkey on the phone (or maybe some guy in Bangladesh, if they have "outsourced" their customer service department) would have been too much work though.

I found a customer service number for Wendys: 1-800-443-7266
It wasn't easy to find, though. They should provide this on the website. The number listed there is not toll-free, but I can tell from the prefix that it is a local Dublin number.

Columbus OH is the home of both Wendys and White Castle. Might explain why we are one of the fattest cities in the nation!

Not only are we all eating at places like McDonalds, Jack in the Box, and Wendy's where most of their food is nearly or over 50% fat, but all of these people are too lazy to even get out of their cars when they buy this stuff.

You are right. Parking in front of the place, getting out and walking 10 steps to the door and another 15 inside to the counter (that's already a total of 25 steps) is all the exercise you need to make up for the burger sin.

BTW, I would recommend eating chili with a spoon, not a fork.

Speaking of Wendy's hamburger buns, I wonder why Wendy's got rid of the Big Classic and forced people who wanted those Big Classic buns to get a Big Bacon Classic. I prefer those buns to the buns they use on the Singles and Doubles.

I worked at a Wendys for a week 15 years ago. Back then at least, all you got were hamburgers off the grill. You were required to throw any burgers that were on the grill for too long into the "Chili chute". So the meat in the chili is pretty much the meat of the hamburgers that were on the grill for a little too long.
