I have a 56K modem and was wondering if it is running slow. I downloaded the large version of the Interlock video last night and it took 5hrs and 12min at an average rate of 3.44 KB/S. How does this compare with other members with 56k modems? Rick

on a really good day on line #2 I can maintain a 5-6 k/s download streams off napster. most other web downloads are slower. your numbers seem right.
We are getting DSL soon

On Napster a maintain anywhere from 1.5 to 3.5. Occasionally 4 or 5.Rick

The theoretical maximum download you could get off of a 56k modem would be 7k per second. But of course the FCC limits the download speed of 56k modems to 53k (because 56k is just waaaay too fast to be considered safe), and then again you never really can achieve maximum ratings anyway. So 5 to 6k would be good for a modem.
Why they even make modems able to go 56k is beyond me, since the FCC just slows it down to 53k anyway. If you have ever bypassed the FCC and downloaded at 56k, you know that it is waaay too fast and causes much destruction and death.

I have cable modem service from at&t.It is blazingly fast. Once you convert from dial-up anything you'll never want to go back.
For example, I've downloaded most of the manuals on-site here to HDD and plan later to write them on CD. The entire platter section took only about 15 minutes to catch it all and similar for the rest.

For those interested, Film-Tech is currently being serviced on it's own dedicated T1 line. This is why there have been no problems recently and increased speed. (It has only gone offline in the last couple of months for one evening about a week ago when some workers cut into an improperly marked underground line.) Our very own friend and forum member Scott Norwood has been maintaining the server from a couple of thousand miles away.
