Hey,
I'm planing a holiday to the US next year and was wondering where i'd be able to see 3-Strip Cinerama, I read that the Cinerama Dome in LA is being renovated and to be open in spring, anyone know the actual date? and if they will be playing the 3-strip films?

Seattle - cinerama, www.seattlecinerama.com, they can run 3-strip.Or come to the UK and go to Bradford to see 'This is cinerama' on the first saturday of each month. Or in March the widescreen festival may show 'how the west was won' in 3 strip.

Thanks Phil Connolly,I just visited the Seattle Cinerama Website, hmmm does that flash animation represent the quality of projection there? with the scratches and jumping images? 
I really want to see HTWWW, as i have it on Super 8 , it would be nice to see the all of the movie in real Cinerama
perhaps i should change my plans and goto the UK instead.

For more on Bradford go to HEREI saw HTWWW last March, it was very good, the print was amazing considering its age and they had just commissioned a new soundtrack, so it sounded great as well.
I sure other film-techies who have been to bradford can tell you more. Unfortunatly I don't know much about the Seattle set-up or how often they show 3-strip.

Don't waste your time at the Seattle unless you know for sure they are running 3-Strip stuff! You will invariably be greatly disappointed as I was. Keep in mind that it is also run by Generam Enema! They do not run regular daily showings of films on the Cinerama screen anymore, but run on a much flattened out screen instead. They remove that entire setup to run Cinerama films on the strip screen which for some rediclous reason resides behind the "flattened out screen". Although they have a 3 projector installation they have only used it one time on one day for the Seattle Film Fest since installing it. If you wait long enough there is an installation going in at the Cinerama Dome in Hollywood. I don't know the timeline on this but I do know that new 3 projector prints are being struck to run there. The Dome is closed right now and being completely refurbished. It is supposed to re-open in early 2002.
Other theatres that operate daily on the Cinerama screen are the Uptown in Washington DC, and the Villa in Salt Lake City which has the largest Cinerama screen still used, www.villatheatre.com
These are the only three that are still operating on a daily basis on the giant curved screen that I am aware of.

Seattle has set up & run Cinerama only on *one* weekend since
the remodeling/chinese-red-light-screen-conversion modification.The procedure for changing over to run 3-strip requires that
the theater GO DARK FOR A DAY, while something which resembles
a re-enactment of "It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" occurs
in the auditorim.
Then, to change back, they must GO DARK FOR A DAY again while
le Danse du Doofus is again performed within.
Check the forecasts at weather.com for a cold day in Hades;
another Cinerama presentation the Seattle Cinerama house
will likely occur on that day. It could happen, it's just
not likely on your shift.

Philip If you can delay your holiday why not come visit us here in Bradford next March for our next Widescreen Weeekend 15-18 March 2002.
As next year is the 50th anniversary of Cinerama we hope to show as many 3 strip films as possible over the 4 days. For those of you who haven't been able to attend previous Weekends because it came only a day after the close of ShoWest we have moved the dates next year to avoid the clash.

Hey Dick,
Why not bring your stuff over here to Salt Lake City during the Winter Olympics next year. You could set up your stuff at the Villa ( www.villatheatre.com ) and run the films on our 96 foot screen, which is the largest screen left in the US. The three booths are all still there and waiting for you. I think Cinerama would get great exposure during the games plus who knows, with Real Cinerama here no one may actually end up going to the games at all and you may have to run extra showings to accomodate the enormus lines that would form around the building.
