We having an easy time setting us our booth since service people are more friendly than usual since Orlando has been very quiet. The hotel itself is a mess since they are doing renovations....within five minutes of the convention site ( Orlando World Center / Marriot ) are at least 6 - 10 hotels in the $35 - 59.00 a night range...as long as you have a car. The trade show runs Thursday through Saturday and if you have the time you can also visit LDI, a related trade show at the Orlando convention center; with their trade show running till Sunday.
As they say in "The Price is Right"....come on down!!!

Wow. 885hPa. That's the lowest center pressure ever recorded for an Atlantic storm. Wilma's currently at SS Category 5 strength, though upper level winds will reduce that strength somewhat before Florida landfall. Nonetheless this one looks like it may be a doozy. Y'all take care now, ya hear?
We're just getting to extra-tropical and tropical cyclones in my aviation meteorology class this semester. We'll (or at least I'll ![[Smile]](smile.gif)
) be watching this one with interest. From the cheap seats of course. ![[Wink]](wink.gif)

Yup, three hours of lecture and that's about what it boils down to Daryl. I s'pose I could just say that and we could all go home early except it's an 8am Monday class and I think all of the students would kill me for making them get up that early to hear such an "executive summary." To say nothing of my program coordinator and department chair and division dean and...
I've never been to ShowEast and certainly won't be able to make it this year. But someday, someday. In the mean time I wonder how well Kinoton stuff floats...

I have received three calls this morning for an update on hurricane projections from people who are flying long distances.
We are going for one day if the weather does not cause problems.
The hotel sits on marshy land, like much of Orlando.

Just take them to the local pancake house Paul. We used to do that quite often with a class of ten. Wed/Thu/Fri afternoons we used to go to a pub for class.
Not only is it more comfortable than most class rooms and lecture halls, you should score yourself a free breakfast (or drinks in the afternoon).

Has SHOWEAST ever been postponed because of a Hurricane or other weather disaster? Im going to be so disappointed if I can't go there this year! Almost as disappointed I was when Bob couldn't get me my DIET MELLO YELLO!

ShowEast in Hurricane country is something that is relatively new. Traditionally, it was held in Atlantic City, NJ. While I'm not a big fan of AC...it was a much smarter place than Orlando. The promise of Orlando was to be closer to South America and open the show up to some un-tapped markets.
What it seems to have become is more of a vaction on the company dole as people are more worried about Tee-times and going to the surrounding vacation spots (Disney, Universal, Sea World). The business aspect of it seems to suffer.
In AC, the show was MUCH more central to the east coast such that techs and exhibitors could come up for a day or two or rotate their employees through and actually provide much more access to the show. At least that is my opinion on the thing.

One block off the boardwalk and AC looks like it's been bombed then flooded then boarded up. Kinda like downtown Las Vegas, one block off of Fremont Street between Main and Las Vegas Blvd and things get a little scary. AC was supposed to be competition to us, but it never really worked out that way. We do envy the sheer number of people living within a one-hour bus ride of the place though. We wish we had that size of market so close by to plunder.
Must be nice to have that kind of academic freedom Daryl. If I did that here I'd be arrested for contributing to the delinquency of persons under the age of 21. Getting fired from the college would be the least of my worries.
When I was a senior at Embry-Riddle I had an aviation law professor that liked to have occasional after-class meetings at a local Pizza Hut. We'd discuss cases over pizza and beer. Since it was a 300-level course, everyone was of legal drinking age. That was one of the better courses I took at ERAU.
Looks like Wilma has slowed down before taking its turn towards Florida. During the turn it will lose some strength due both to being over land and to the shearing effect of the upper-level winds. But once she gets back over warm water she may have a nice long and slow and straight run to build back up. We'll see how the numerical prediction models hold up. These things are always interesting, in the Chinese sense, to watch. From afar.

Hey, they could hold the thing in Philly, Baltimore or DC for all I care but more central East Coast will draw more people than Orlando. Being in a "resort" to me, is more of a distraction then good business.

Showeast was originally a joint venture of the Pennsylvania and Mid-Atlantic NATOs and was designed as a regional get-together. I believe it used to be in Philadephia even before it moved to Altantic City.
Then in the early 1990's it got hijacked to Orlando. I always assumed this was simply to boost attendence at Walt Disney World.

Actually, the last ShowEast in AC was in 1999. This marks the sixth year the event's been in Orlando.

Miami was a consideration but they could not find hotel rooms at a reasonable price and logistics to cinemas.
Even though ShowEast is on as planned, the airports will be closed on Monday while Hurricane Wilma does her visit to the state...some international visitors have canceled due unsure reservations.
We are boarded up and generators and pumps ready.... ![[Confused]](confused.gif)

Generators are nice, but if the power's out for a week, gas gets scarce. After you use them to keep the fridge going long enough to cook the food, they become more of a liability.
For light, the best is about 3 hurricane lamps (kerosene lamps)

cheap at Wal-Mart, K-Mart, etc., & a gallon of cheap kerosene from Ace Hardware will last for 5 hurricane seasons. One lamp in the bedroom, one in the bathroom, & one in the kitchen or living room.
Just put them on a table or counter & leave them there, don't carry them around. Even if you don't have any hurricane lamps, what IS indispensable is a railroad lantern. Flashlights go through batteries too fast & go dark at the worst times, how many dadgum 6v batteries you gonna buy anyway & will they be available, walking around with a hurricane lamp is an invitation to disaster if you trip on a rug or stair, etc. A railroad lantern goes upstairs & around the house with you, outside in the wind & dark & stays lighted, just as they originally were used; they are just GREAT.

You've got some time, hit the flea markets & kitsch shops for a railroad lantern. When the power quits, you'll love it. Shaving by flashlight is ignunt. Also, I had the agreeable experience of hearing someone unauthorized poking around in a building without power say "Ho-o-OO SHIT!" & bolt like a rabbit as I came around the corner of a black stairwell with a railroad lantern after the last hurricane. It must have looked very Cat & The Canary.

Went on Wednesday, did my planned schedule, and got back in time to beat the curfew imposed in Miami....with plenty of fuel to keep our generators going
