The Loews Cheri 1-4 Cinema in boston is officially closing on thurs 11/8. A lot of people regarded this theatre as a dump, but I love it. It has that old classy feel to it. It has a chandilier in the stairwell and everything. This theatre was once the pride and joy of the Sack Cinema chain. I am sad to see it go.

Very Funny Rach, This is a theatre that I think couls be a great showplace again if somebody took the pride to restore it. Smaller classier theatres are a dying breed.

I've been suspecting something for a while here. The Cheri is about two blocks from my apartment and I've noticed that the chandelier has been gone for the last few days.Since Loews opened the Boston Common theatre (an OK-ish, but very generic stadium plex), the Cheri has been a $3 house, apparently without much success. I'm not a huge fan of it, but I agree that it has more 'potential' to be a real showplace than anything else in Boston proper.

I believe Sean is right. The Cheri had been running as a discount theater but is scheduled to close today, last I heard.

Update: yep, it's gone. They didn't run the 7pm and 9pm shows. I took pictures tonight of someone putting up "CLOSED" on the marquee. 
Let's hope that someone buys the theatre. In any case, it would be rather difficult to demolish it with the parking garage on top of it and I can't see it easily being converted to another use.

It would be nice if the company that takes over the property converted it back to they way it was as a single. That was in the days when no one ever heard of a "Multi-Plex" Another tear - rolls down the cheek.

The General Motors building when it first opened had a drive in movie theatre in the basement. They called it the Auto Pub. You would sit in the car and have your lunch and watch a movie at the same time.

We went in and disassembled the booths today. It looks as though most everything has been/is being removed...and I mean everything...including the "kitchen" sink. First time I've actually had to move a Norelco double-A...I always knew they were heavy...but damn!The manager was telling us that the last time they played 70mm was for Wolf. It was a special show that Jack Nicholson was supposed to attend...but didn't.
I thought it was very interesting that one of the booths opened into the parking garage...that was the only way in or out...unless you could fit through the port hole.

To drag this thread up again, check out this proposal to rework the Cheri into a bowling alley:

In a "College Town" I would think that a bowling Alley could have a good chance for success. Now a clever entrepreneur should approach the owner and suggest that one of the existing auditoriums be preserved and run as a specialty theatre with retrospectives and festival type bookings. They could work extreemly well together.
They could have their cake and they can eat it too.
