So If I play a Cd encoded in Dolby Surround through the non-sync of a Dolby Cinema Processor, does it actually play it back in Dolby Surround.

Not exactly. I believe the non-sync input only accepts 2 channels (left and right). And even if it accepts more channels, a standard CD player can only read 2 channels. However, the processor can be set up to matrix any 2-channel non-sync source much the same way the optical soundtrack is matrixed. By doing this, you will have 4-channel surround. Check the manual for your particular processor for details.

Not likely. AFAIK, the matrix handles non-sync differently than the regular optical sound (no center channel and much lower surround level than optical). Running said CD thru the matrix in format 04 (after padding the level down quite a bit) should work however.

Except that 04 includes type-A noise reduction, whereas the Dolby-encoded CD doesn't have (and doesn't need) noise reduction--it just uses the matrix encoding.

And, on the older processors like the CP50, there are four non-sync inputs (LCRS) and non-sync bypasses the matrix completely...

CP55's can decode a surround channel in non-sync, but not a center channel.

The CP55 and 65 and 500 can all be programmed to treat the nonsync input as a non NR encoded signal and decode it with LCR outputs from the matrix
