This month's issue (Feb. 2002) of Boxoffice magazine reports that Tom Moyer Theaters has taken over 2 closed Regal Cinemas in Beaverton and Cornelius, Oregon. For those of you not from the Pacific Northwest region, Tom Moyer (senior) operated some 280 or so screens from 1963 till 1989 when he sold his chain to Act 3 Theaters. He had operated his company under many names such as LUXURY THEATERS, TMT THEATERS, EASTGATE THEATERS, and others.

Moyer ran several locations in Eugene/Springfield Oregon when I moved here in 1990. They had the best theatre in the area, the THX house at West 11th Movieland (they also had some *horrible*, older locations that were put out of their misery in the early 90s). I suspect the author of the Boxoffice article might have the sale date to Act 3 wrong, or else maybe Moyer sold the locations in pieces over an extended time period?? I think it was more like 1994 or so, not positive though. I had a couple snail-mail communications with Scott Hicks of Moyer Theaters regarding technical issues, probably during 1993-1994. The responses always came on Moyer letterhead. I believe Moyer was still running Movieland when they installed Dolby Digital in the THX screen, making it the first digital house in Eugene, which was like 1994?Whatever, that screen was Scott Hicks' baby and he was very proud of the presentation there. A friend of mine was an asst. mgr. there during that time and he says Scott was *very* picky about making sure the local staff maintained high standards of presentation.
Movieland was closed by Regal a year or so ago, along with a couple other underperforming locations, and is slated to be leveled any day now (if it hasn't already been).

Scott Hicks worked for both the Larry Moyer Theater chain and Act 3 Theaters.

I went to work at the Embassy 14 in San Antonio in February, 1988 shortly after Act III purchased the Santikos chain. It was within a year or 2 that they bought the Luxury/Moyer Theatres and moved the main office from San Antonio to Portland, OR. That would make it around 1989 - 1990 that they made the purchase.Rick McCluney

Maybe I'm hallucinating about the dates. Could be those letters I got from Scott were on Act III letterhead and I've spaced on it.
