Film-Tech and CPI have secured a room for everyone to get together this year at ShoWest. It will be on Wednesday evening. Does anyone (other than Mark) have a *good* suggestion for a place to go afterwards for dinner? As I mentioned in another thread, no seafood or chinese, but everything else considered.
Posted by Mark Gulbrandsen (Member # 72) on 02-10-2002, 03:45 PM:
Remember Brad when U say Mark you're also saying Gord, Kye, Ian, and Aaron. We all discussed this last night on the chat and we feel you should just get a bag of day old Big Macs, join us with them over a the Seafood place and you'll be happy as a peach.

Brad,
Forgot to mention that Ian knows of a place that has both seafood and red meat, perhaps a littel raw stuff too. Check with him on this. Might be a good place to go.
Mark @ GTS
Posted by Brad Miller (Member # 2) on 02-10-2002, 03:50 PM:
Nope Mark, you fellas are on your own. You could throw a steak in front of me, but with the stench of seafood in the air it mine as well be a fresh doggy turd.

The biggest buffet in Vegas is the Belageo's and they have excellent steaks roast beef pork venison seafood italian and chineese in one place. Something for everyone
Posted by Mark Gulbrandsen (Member # 72) on 02-10-2002, 03:56 PM:
Brad,
Good seafood does not have a stench to it.Gord,
Thats the place U mentioned last night. Its fairly close by if I remember correctly. The breakfast buffet at Bally's is also realy good.

Eating isn't the problem in Las Vegas, deciding is the problem. At Paris
- Les Artistes Steakhouse - French Steakhouse
- Mon Ami Gabi - Parisian brasserie
- Le Provencal - Italian style restaurant with French flair (Ky and I had quite a good meal here last year.)
- Le Village Buffet - Dishes from five French provinces (Allways had a line)
- Le Café Île St. Louis - French coffee shop
- JJ's Boulangerie - French bakery (Good place for Coffee and pastery)
- du Parc - Seasonal Café
- La Chine - Hong Kong-style concept
- Ortanique - Caribbean with Jazz music
At Bally's
Al Dente
Bally's Stealhouse
The Big Kitchen Buffet (Site of the TFF Tech Breakfast)
Chang's at Bally's
Sidewalk Cafe (This Denny's wannabe is the site of many high powered meals before the trade show starts.)
Sterling Brunch
And you haven't even left the property.
If you walk accross the street to Bellagio, you will find:
Le Cirque (Yes, that Le Cirque!)
Circo (like Le Cirque (same kitchen)without the tie and the attitude)
Necter
Prime Steakhouse
Picasso
Aqua
Noodles
Jasmine
Olives
Chintaro
The Buffet, Set in the atmosphere of a European marketplace, The Buffet features Italian, Japanese, Chinese and American cuisine as well as an elaborate seafood selection. Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner daily.
The options are endless.

Markster, the "stench" of seafood is not only smell, but sight as well as far as I am concerned. I simply do not like seafood in the least bit and will not be around it, so please stop wasting your efforts on trying to convince me to eat at a place that serves seafood. You will have a better chance of getting a lifelong die hard vegetarian to chow down on a big steak before getting me into a seafood place. It is just not going to happen. Go enjoy a cockroach of the sea (I think you guys call them lobsters) without me.Is that clear enough, or should I reword?
Posted by Gordon McLeod (Member # 33) on 02-10-2002, 04:21 PM:
Okay here is a solution since the show is more than one day longTUESDAY NIGHT SEAFOOD at the RIO
WED NIGHT FILMTECH DRINKS and RED MEAT at a suitable place( not that establishment in the dessert that Bob Maar is always talking about
)
Posted by Paul Mayer (Member # 355) on 02-10-2002, 05:32 PM:
And for off-Strip, non-hotel, locals kind of places I'll put in:Great Mexican and margaritas: Lindo Michocan On DI between Eastern & Pecos
British pub and grub: Crown & Anchor On Tropicana east of Maryland Pkwy
Best Japanese buffet (sorry Brad): Makino On Decatur north of Flamingo
I admit to the downside of needing transportation to get to these, but they're worth it.
Cheers!
Paul

I think Monday night would be a good crown and anchor night with some newcastle brown or do they have Tetleys best bitter
Posted by Mark Gulbrandsen (Member # 72) on 02-10-2002, 07:12 PM:
I can live with Gords suggestion of Tuesday For fish and Wed for red meat. Sounds fine to me. Just let everyone know when and where.
Mark @ GTSP.S.: Brad, I'll bring U a bag of fresh carrots!
Posted by Mark Gulbrandsen (Member # 72) on 02-10-2002, 07:41 PM:
Hey Brad,
You are going to be there all three days right? Since U will be we should split up and do several nights of different dinners for Film-Tech. This would encompass everyones eating desires. This way all your suppliers and vendors will get to meet U (finally) and spend some time with U. Plan on it taking quite some time to get through just one booth at Showest. Its never been easy to get a through meeting with everyone there. Believe me, its never a one day affair for anyone. I'm assuming you will also be spending time in the CPI booth with Dave and Ron promoting Film-Guard at least some of the time each day....and Film-Tech as well.
Mark @ GTS
Posted by Aaron Sisemore (Member # 145) on 02-10-2002, 08:26 PM:
Well if we have to do two or more dinners then so be it. One of the nights at SHoWest I will be dining with my boss at Z-Tejas (Gord, Mark: they have Newcastle on tap there)As far as the seafood part goes, its Rio or nothing for me.
As far as any other buffet we can figure this out before we go.

wed is redmeat night then after film tech

One reason I have to lose a few pounds before the show...with breakfast, lunch, and dinner meetings.....and of course every free hot dog
(the hotter the better) on the tradeshow floor....poor Barry Ferrell of QSC saw me choke on a dog by trying to eat too fast a couple of Showest shows ago.....it pays to have a business partner who knows the "heimlick" procedure.

Let's cut to the Chase and I don't mean Jerry. Seafood is out...not to be seen or eaten. It is absolutly disgusting and it's not edible. It is probably the forerunner to the original pods from the film " Invasion of the Body Snatchers". Anyone who eats seafood at Showest will probably never see their home again. They will spend the rest of their natural life in a nursing home, wearing depends. If you don't believe me ask Paul Thompson.

Posted by Jerry Chase (Member # 660) on 02-10-2002, 10:19 PM:
It looks like Paul needs to organize a weenie roast for youse guys.Seafood is fine if you know which fish are bottom feeding scavengers and likely to be full of worms. (Not bait worms, worms in the flesh.)
Enjoy yourself. I fail to have the desire to get in one of those flying sardine cans lined with reject theatre and bus seats, be searched by minimum wage workers, and be threatened with life in jail if I accidently mention a dessert consisting of two or more layers of variously flavored ice cream frozen in a round or melon-shaped mold. If dubya wants me to get back on a plane he can stop with the hinky terrorizing of passengers for nail files, and make it illegal for planes to sit loaded and sealed on the tarmac for more than 20 minutes.
Many years ago, in the days of DC-3s and DC-6s, I used to love to fly. Today I consider commercial flight as one of the tortures of modern society. (No offense meant to our resident pilots.)

Bob, I'll have you know I turn 62 tomorrow.
No nursing home yet. Therefore, I have only have one answer.....Pbpthbpthbthp!
Jerry, I have to win a Weenie Roller first. Then we will get Brad to fetch the weenies...

I'll put in a small vote for the Mirage buffet. The Mirage is my favorite hotel on the strip. But, in truth, I'll go where the crowd is going for the Film-Tech stuff on Wednesday.Speaking of which, where is the Film-Tech drink?: Do we have a time and room yet? I take it the Bourbon Street Inn is no longer on the itenery.

I'll put my 2 cents in for suggestions for food. Unfortunately, much as I would like to meet many of you, I will be probably be working the floor at ShoWest.
As I am a local now, this is what I hear and know that are good and not so good places to eat...
1. Everybody tells me, hands down, Rio is the place for the buffet.
2. As much as I love Caesars Palace, their buffet is EXTREMELY over priced and bland. My wife hated it. They do however, have some really ritzy places in the Forum. Wolfgang Puck has a place there, Spagos, The Cheesecake Factory (drool).
3. The buffet at Sunset Station off of 93/95 in Henderson and Green Valley Ranch off of 215 in Henderson is pretty damn good and at a reasonable rate. Green Valley is where my new theatre is at. Historical note...that section of I215 is where the chase of Lethal Weapon 4 was shot.
4. Sam's Town buffet is cheap , but not bad. It ain't great, but you should be able to hold it down. The steak place there is pretty damn good however.
5. Stay away from the Stratasphere. That stench that Brad was talking about is very strong there.
6. The Bellagio...one of the best. Period.
7. The Peppermill near the Riviera is awsome. They have that classic Vegas feel to it as well. Feels like the Rat Pack could walk in anytime.
8. Riviera...sux.
9. I know I am going to get flamed for this one. I just love the Denny's on the strip across from the Mirage. Call me a glutton for punishment...
10. Boardwalk Casino buffet made me violently ill. I did not know which end to stick at the toilet.
11. Carroways on the stip is cozy and pretty decent. A classier version of Denny's.
12. Harley Davidson Cafe is so damn expensive but it is so damn good.
13. ESPN Zone just opened up last year during the summer. My brother said it was decent but costly.
14. The buffet at Excalibur is decent.
15. I have not heard anything about the buffet at the Paris, but everytime I pass it, it has that funky fishy stench. Note to Brad...avoid.I could probably go on but I won't. If anybody wants some research done, it won't take much convincing to to get my wife and baby to get out of the house and try something if I have the time. Just let me know.

While we're talking about a Film-Tech gathering, who runs nearby theaters in Vegas? I must come and visit.
Posted by Christopher Duvall (Member # 284) on 02-11-2002, 05:28 AM:
I now run the (drum roll, please) NEW Green Valley Ranch 10 in Green Valley Ranch Station Casino. It is off the i215 in Henderson. The strip is about 5-10 minutes away depending on traffic or film shooting. I think I have seen somebody else from Vegas posting here but not sure who. None of my fellow company cronies in Vegas do post here and I don't think I have seen any of the competitors either. I am hoping someone will prove me wrong ...

Phil, I was sorry to hear about that meal you were eating last time you posted here. Please let us know how you are when you get released from the hospital in a few days. Take some of Gord's advice and it might help with that headache.

Well Bob...and everyone...Speaking of eating fish in Vegas....
My parents went on vacation to Vegas in the mid 1970's when Vegas was still Vegas....and I was still a tyke...
Anyhow, we go to eat breakfeast in a restraunt. Into the restraunt comes this prostitute with some of the nicest ta-ta's you have ever seen...wearing nothing but a totally see through top with no bra....
Anyhow, this woman proceeds to sit next to us. My Dad and I were transfixed...and my Mom was totally embarrassed and kept trying to cover my eyes!
That is my real fish story...and I'm sticking to it!
Posted by Bob Maar (Member # 763) on 02-11-2002, 07:20 PM:
Mark,Are you sure they were sea _ _ _ _roaches and not just plain.
Paul,
I beat you by 10 months.
Everyone else.......Run for your lives do not eat food that swims.
Much better if it Moo's.
If you did by "Chance" ( not you Jerry) gargle twice go to bed for a month. Then get up and call you neighbor. If they answer the phone hang up. Repeat above and try again until no one answers.
Will,
Please send me that ladies number, I need to speak with her tonight.

Bob, are you sure you're not (b)eating a dead horse?
>>> Phil
Posted by Bob Maar (Member # 763) on 02-11-2002, 08:32 PM:
Phil,Even you would have to admit that horse would be preferable to anything from the sea.
Of course a clear, cold Beefeater Gibson Martini is the best of all. Who the heck needs food.
Posted by Jerry Chase (Member # 660) on 02-11-2002, 09:02 PM:
Bob was last seen tossing cookies into a bag after eating seahorse...

Polish potato water is better than Beefeater nowadays. You need to get Tanqued. The 35mm martini: http://www.cinepad.com/martini.html

Posted by Ken Lackner (Member # 1002) on 02-11-2002, 11:41 PM:
After I read that site for manbeef, I think creamofsomeyoungguy is preferable. I think I am going to hurl now.... Seriously, I think I am going to loose it.
I have to agree with what many of you have said...Rio for best buffet. Also for best seafood, but if I recall, the seafood buffet is pretty expensive. Ceasars is also excellent, but expensive.
Another good buffet is Sams Town. But it's kinda far away from everything else.
For Mexican, I recommend Margaritas at Frontier.

Posted by Ian Price (Member # 14) on 02-12-2002, 03:59 PM:
I think this post should be re-titled ShoWest food. We will need another thread to actually discuses the Film-Tech Gathering. The only questions left in the food department are:
At what time should we meet at the Rio on Tuesday and will they take a reservation for us so we don’t have to wait an hour in their fucking line?
Where are we going to eat on Wednesday? And should we make a reservation so that the restaurant isn’t overwhelmed when we get there?
Posted by Brad Miller (Member # 2) on 02-12-2002, 04:42 PM:
Full details on the Film-Tech gathering will be posted on the front page of the website along with an RSVP email address in the very near future. As far as the Tuesday thing, I will be enjoying a nice dinner of good food with Bob Maar. (Bob - you are bringing the hamster, right?)

Joe just finished resizing the pictures from ShoWest. There are over 200 to sort through and decide which ones to post. Patience.

There is a freeware batch resizer for photos used on the web. I think webattack has a copy. Search for Mihov resizer. Joe could have had that job completed in 2.5 minutes.

I'll put in a good word for the "Imagemagick" (sp?) tools, which are a freeware set of command-line programs for image manipulation. I used "mogrify" and a small shell script to resize all of the donkey pictures (that I was using to make fun of Joe last week) in a few seconds. This was originally written for Unix systems, but I'm willing to bet that there is either a native Win32 version available or that it can be compiled under Cygwin.[Insert obligatory comment about how difficult it can be to find good pictures of donkeys on the web.]

You mean you can't just do a Yahoo! search for "ass pictures"??

A Google advanced image search yielded 23 "hits" for a search on "ass pictures"!

I not only resized the pics from 1280 to 625 (width) but also color corrected each pic to get rid of the slight green tint that the Casio likes to include (as well as some film cameras, I've noticed). Sizing all of those and color correcting them in batch mode with Photoshop 6 took less than 15 minutes. Photoshop resizes well and it's one of the few apps I trust to resize without artifacts.

Will there be any photos of Mark, sitting on the Olympic Ice - and still sitting there until the ice melt?

Help! The ice started to melt but now its re-frozen and I'm stuck in it. Actually we did the great GTS move to the new building move while the Olympics were going on. This way all the rental gear that was out could all come to the new building without the need to move it twice.
Then Showest for 3 days and now Dimmer systems galoor........

bah. Seems that my employers send a handful of employees to ShoWest every year, and it always seems that they send people that won't fully appreciate it. Example: the manager of the location I'm at. She's a neat person to have as a boss-lady, but I think that I knew more about film before I worked at a cinema than she knows now...

What? Me, jealous?

.....
And after all the talk of seafood...
Maybe one has to be from someplace right near a large body of water to appreciate food that used to swim in a large body of water.
Then too, I'm quite distrustful of places that serve seafood, and are more than 50 miles away from an ocean!
...and whoever doesn't already know that I'm an odd duck, doens't know me!
