I had the opportunity to try a red Twizzler for the first time a couple weeks ago. Interesting stuff it is. Almost no taste, lots of color, does not dissolve at all in the mouth, just chew it up and swallow the debris. As an experiment I placed an inch long piece in water. For several days the only change was some minor fading of the brilliant color, no effect on solidness of it. Finally after 8 days, the color had turned to light pink and the material had become slightly mushy. At 10 days it finally broke up when prodded. Is this stuff just flavored plastic or what? This sample came from a newly opened package dated many months out. It must be virtually indigestable. I guess they buy it based on appearance.

My wife LOVES those things. Just happen to have a package handy. Ingredients: Corn Syrup; Flour; Sugar; Cornstarch; Partially Hydrogenated Soybean Oil, Salt, Artificial Flavor, Citric Acid, Potassium Sorbate, a Preservative, and Artificial Coloring (includes Red 40). Yum, Yum.Made by a division of Hershey.

Of course, 3 Twizzlers do have a total of 120 calories, but only 5 of those from fat!

Years of research (by me) as a kid, shows that you CAN dissolve this stuff by biting both ends off and using as a straw for pop. The pop seems to dissolve it and make it mushy (along with your gut). Other than that, I agree, it's like "swallowing the debris".As a fan of licorice, I always scold my wife when she asks for "red licorice". My mother was from Cheshire, and I got my taste for the stuff when Marks & Spencer's still had stores in Canada, loved those little licorice wheels with the gummy candy in them. Also, eating the "raw jello", the gelatin you make by dissolving the concentrated cubes of gelatin, yummy!

With flour listed as the second ingredient, it's likely the gluten protein that makes it so impervious. Gluten is also an ingredient in many glues!:

There still are Marks and Spencer stores in Canada. There's a small mall shop in Coquitlam, B.C. and a large two level mall store in Victoria, B.C., a large ex-pat British community.(Whoops, I guess they have closed their Canadian stores since I last visited. Canada is not listed on their official site)

Twizzlers are DISGUSTING...but I sell TONS of them.I like Red Vines a little better.

At the '95 ShoWest, Tom Hanks said he judges a theatre on whether or not they carry Red Vines or Twizzlers. Can't remember which ones he prefers...I think it's Vines.

Red Vines or Twizzlers, Red Vines or Twizzlers. Well, from my observations, I would say it would depend on what coast you are from. I have never heard of Red Vines until I came for a training visit to Portland OR. back in 97. I, at the time, lived on the East coast. Any of the transplanted East Coasters in Vegas swear by Twizzlers, but don't say that to the natives or anybody else from the West. Personally, I hate both. I just don't like eating plastic...
