We have:Gosford Park with 7 Oscar nominations
In The Bedroom with 5 Oscar nominations
Amelie with 5 OScar nominations
Mulholland Drive with one nominations
and we are bringing back Training Day with two Oscar nominations.
We have shown two of the five Best Animated Short Films. We showed, as you all have, For The Birds and just last week we showed Fify Percent Grey.
We are "Bringing the Best Films in the World to Sonoma County."

No, you are bringing the most nominated films in the world to Sonoma County! Just 'cause they get nominated or even get the Oscar doesn't make any movie good by any stretch.I really hope Monsters Inc beats out Shrek. It was 10 times better. Well maybe 8 times better. But Shrek will win because it made more money. Just watch.

So from my count...Moulin Rouge has received 8 nominations including...Best Picture, Best Actress and...(wait for it Peter) Best editing! 
Of course, it won't win Best Picture or Best Actress, but perhaps editing...
A disappointment to see Come What May wasn't nominated in the song catagory (What the hell???Pearl Harbor's song???)
And what on earth is Ridley Scott doing being nominated for Best Director? IMHO, the Best Director and Best Picture nominations are inseparable.

Why did Ridley Scott get nominated for Best Director? Because only directors nominate directors, while the whole Academy nominates films. Since directors consider themselves the "author" of a film (and are contractually billed as such with their added possessive credit), my guess is that most, if not all, directors would vote for the same films as the people who directed them. Maybe the Academy needs to revise its rules and have the director pick up the main award along with the producer. Of course, htey sometimes do both.

Speaking of Best Song, did no one notice of "The Origin of Love" from HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH?Both the song and that animation that went with it were great.
How many slots for the best Animated category are there?
Are there only three or were there only three nominated?
Although I didnt care much for WAKING LIFE, it would have been nice to see it get recognized with a nomination.

I can't understand why Robert Altman is so popular. I haven't found his films all that enthralling (Mash was ok). Stacking your film with cameos from lots of major actors is no substitute for good directing.cheers Peter

I may not have been clear. I would assume that all (or most)directors who nominated Ridley Scott would also nominate Black Hawk Down for the Best Picture category. But while only votes from directors could hand a nomination to Scott, the directors votes for Best Picture are diluted by all the other branches of the Academy (and I believe the biggest group by far is the actor's branch).

I hold that the biggest rip-off is that A.I. got jacked, except a couple nobody cares about. I thought it was the best movie of the year, but because everybody was dumb and thought there were aliens at the end, it wasn't understood, and left out. Typical.

I didn't think there were aliens at the end, and I still didn't especially like the movie. First, Haley Joel Osment was too old for the role. A 14-year-old playing a 10-year-old who calls his mother "Mommy!" ??!! He needed a service pack or hot fix or something to adjust his behavior to his age. Also, if the makers of the robot were so smart and the robot was so perfect, why did he have such bad teeth? I was a little indifferent and perplexed by Moulin Rouge, but I'm afraid to post that under the MR thread.

The directing seemed pretty 'alien' to me. (and to those who decide the nomination for the Academy Awards apparently)

Jerry, LOL. Haley Joel Osment is talented and everything, great in 6th Sense, but I thought he was very wrong for AI, or at the very least they needed to adjust the material to fit his actual age group. That "Mommy!!" thing gave me the willies every time.
As far as Moulin Rouge, to be fair, there were presentation problems with where I saw it. Very short-throw auditorium, large screen, keystoning, dim grainy image, with light from the booth washing out part of the screen all the time. I should rent the DVD and give it another try...

I'm told Fox Searchlight is freaking out and wanting to see all our passlists for The Deep End. They paid to have almost all guild members passed in and yet it received zero nominations. And I totally agree with you James. I think the Hedwig soundtrack rocked and I feel that any single song from Hedwig is far better than any of the nominated songs (and I loved Moulin Rouge)!

First of all... AI kicked my royal ass. I loved it.. COuld have done without the part in the middle, you know, between the opening and closing credits...Moulin Rouge was my favorite film of the year. No nomination for song? Pearl Harbor? I think the japanese need to bomb the awards ceremony just when they award pearl harbor for anything.
Where was memento? i didnt see it in the noms.. Did i miss it, I hope I didnt just forget it ws there, or did the voters... cant remember..

No Samurai for Best Picture...that's a bummer. I wonder if LOTR well get the award again for Sound Mix. I still think Master and Commander had the better mix. As for sound editing, I'll still go with Master and Commander. As for the other nominations, glad to see LOTR do exceptional, glad to see Cold Mountain did not do so well (it wasn't THAT good), and very happy for all the nominations that Lost in Translation garnered. Go BIG BAD BILL!

I think this year's collection of nominees seems a bit better on average than previous years. There's only a few obvious omissions.
"American Splendor" should have received a Best Picture nomination along with a nod going to Paul Giamatti for Best Actor. But the academy is too stuffy to give praise to a movie based on a comic book everyman. And Paul Giamatti is not some good looking leading man type like Jude Law. Still, he put forth one of the best performances of 2003.
I haven't seen "Lost in Translation" yet. But it is kind of cool to see Bill Murray get a Best Actor nomination. It is even more amazing to see Sofia Coppola get a Best Director nomination. I guess she found her calling. It certainly wasn't acting in front of the camera; it's tough to get that dull performance in "Godfather III" out of memory.

FINDING NEMO for Screenplay?! Are you kidding me? Good movie, not a great screenplay. Kill Bill was far better. I don't think it will win, but it shouldn't have gotten a nod.
I was happy to see Johnny Depp for Pirates, I thought he'd get passed over due to the type of film it was. Overall it was a decent line up.

Last term Mercyhurst played 9 movies. Two of them weren't current films because we always try to get one or two older movies in the mix. (Hard Day's Night and Metropolis.) Out of the remaining 7 movies, two of them were mominated:
Whale Rider
Capturing the Friedmans
This term we will play 18 movies, out of which, 2 of them are rep titles. (Monty Python and Lawrence of Arabia.) Of the remaining 16 films 9 of them are nominees:
Lost in Translation
In America
21 Grams
Girl with a Pearl Earring
City of God
The Fog of War
The Barbarian Invasions
The Weather Underground
American Splendor
So, overall, 11 out of 27 film we play this year will be Oscar Nominees. If you don't count our rep titles, that's 11/23... An Oscar Ho score of 47%.

I also agree that a new thread should have been opened for this topic. Anyway, how many of these movies do you guys think that we are going to be getting back because of these nominations? It wouldn't suprise me if we got Mistic River and Master and Commander back.
