There are a lot of times during the day when it is necessary to use the word "fucking" or "fuckin'" to describe something. That's great and all, but "fucking" really isn't hip, is it? So what do I propose to remedy this extremely dire situation, so that we may remain hip and trendy? Simply use the word "phuggin" instead! Works great written down and shows everybody that U R tight bangin' yo. So you can now say things like "Phuggin Technicolor" and be hip instead of vulgar.

One of the first chiefs I ever worked for used to write 'NFG' on the report sheets for worn or damaged prints. If anyone (e.g. a distributor 'phoned up) asked him what it stood for, he'd reply 'no flippin' good'. I don't think anyone was left in any doubt as to the real meaning.

Years ago, when I was a kid, there used to be a laundry detergent named "Duz". Back then the competition for the market was stiff. Along came a new detergent named, "Phug", trying to muscle in on their market share.

Their slogan was:

If Duz don't do it, Phug it!

I think that Benecio del Toro used that 'phug' quite a lot in The Usual Suspects. no?

Richard Pryor has a comedy routine about two competing laundry soaps on one of his early albums...."Fugg" and "Sugg."

"If ya can't Fugg it...Sugg it!"

Why use a word when the original has so much mure balls.

When I drop the big one people have no doubt about my mood.

Simple! Because it is more important to be hip! Being hip is more important than friends, family, disease, war, peace, Snickers bars, you name it! If you can't be hip you might as well just shoot yourself.

Hip, Hip you say

Yesterday my daughter bullied me into buying phuggin flares.

I hoped I had seen the last of those bloody things way back when "keep on trucking" was hip.

Shit I'm now so hip I'm bigger than Oprah.

"Phuggin'" was the substitue swear word used in "Johnny Dangerously" to get around the then-fairly new PG-13 rating.

Norman Mailer used (copiously) the euphemistic word "fug" in his novel "The Naked And The Dead" because publishers would not print the real word in 1948. This was the first printed use I know of, either he invented it or had come across it. Mailer certainly knew of Alfred Jarry's use of "Merdre" (ie "shitr")in his play Ubu Roi and the riot resulting at the Paris premiere in 1896...
In 1964 a folk-rock-ish iconoclastic band formed, named "the Fugs" in a tribute of sorts. They were still together in some form in 2001, and still pretty weird. I have their early song "Wet Dream" on MP3 here if someone wants it (a classic!).

Spelling it "phug" is new to me, but I haven't seen it written or heard it spoken lately. The need for a euphemism is gone... publishers don't give a fuck what they print, and I hear words every night on TV that would have earned me lots of trouble 40 years ago if I'd uttered them in earshot of an adult.

ph instad of F....the new way instead of saying Fat it is Phat...

Posted by Ken Lackner (Member # 1002) on 04-05-2002, 01:24 PM:

But Fat is not synonymous with Phat. Fat means fat, phat means cool, or something like that.

Slangwise, fat means stupid and phat means cool. So I guess to distinguish between an insult and a compliment (besides the tone of voice the line is delivered in), you could say "You are so fucking fat!" for the insult and "You are so phuggin phat!" for the compliment.

Phug the phuggin phuggers!

That's news to me! I had no idea there was a slang definition for "fat." But what the phug do I know? I ain't phidgiddy phat like dat.

Phiggidy! Ken, your constant e-mails to me about how to talk tight-bangin' are beginning to pay off! Here is your final lesson: Use "phiggidy", "phuggin" and "phat" as much as you can at work. Professional types love it. You'll get that tech job by the end of the week!
