I was given a tour of Century's Sam's Town theatre in Las Vegas yesterday. What a beautiful theatre! The one thing that intrigued me the most was their Digital Projection set-up. The GM, Mike, fired it up for me to show me what it can do. Needless to say - I was amazed. The focus was dead on (on a curved screen no less!), the picture was crystal clear and extremely bright (a 7000 watt xenon will do that you know!). Other than the short life on the xenon bulb and a slightly bigger electric bill - I think we will see DLP real soon on a mass scale. The future is here folks!-Dennis

To complicate the cost issue, examine what the useable life will be for those $200,000 per screen setups. A $30,000 film projector can last decades. Anything digital gets obsolete very very fast. If theater operators are going to move to digital, not only do they need a product that significantly outdoes the sharpness of image available on the best home systems, they need a product that will last for many years and perhaps be upgradeable for a very reasonable price. None of those standards have been met with any of the digital projection systems designed thus far.

The Barco/Kinotone D-Cine projector at Sams Town is projecting a 52 foot image with Avica ( Dell ) servers suppling the program. this site was used by Barco for dealer training during ShoWest convention.

Actually, Century has two digital screens here--the other one is at the Orleans. I caught The Rookie there in DLP the other night. Didn't look bad at all on their approx. 50' screen IMHO. My roommate (who works on high-res CG images) was initially very impressed--it took him a bit to pick up on the various digital/video artifacts in those images. Both of us think most filmgoers wouldn't notice the difference unless its pointed out to them.BTW the Brenden Palms will be getting some sort of digital projection for one of their screens shortly. With all the festivals and previews they do there, digital capability makes sense. Sounds like some deals are being made to get these machines into the theatres without a lot of up front money. I never expected to see digital projection in this market this soon.

The Palms will be having their Digital in for "Star Wars EP II" - at least that's the word from Lucasfilm.------------------

--- Wouldn't the theatre normally contract directly with the digital projection system vendor to set the schedule? If the word has to come from Lucasfilm, is Lucasfilm helping finance the installation, or selecting the theatres that get priority on getting any equipment?

To me it makes sense that LAS VEGAS has a glut of digital projectors. They have a glut of everything else, digital or otherwise.

Vegas is a good place for digital projection to happen and stay. Cost is still the biggest issue in digital projection. Then there is all the support gear thats needed. Do you have a spare 400K laying around to equip each booth?
