I've received several requests now for setting up a forum to discuss home DVD cinema. Since this is a film based website I haven't put too much thought into it, but the reasoning is that once the movies leave the theaters, the only way people can enjoy them from that point on (with the exception of occasional repertory screenings) is at home on a DVD based system.

Any thoughts, comments, suggestions? Are there enough people here into collecting DVDs to make such a forum worthwhile?

While I am soliciting for comments, what is the general consensus regarding the "Help wanted/seeking employment" forum? Keep it or dump it?

I guess about the only thing I can think of that would get discussed is equipment review(s)? Like "who makes the best progressive scan DVD player" (well...who does?) I never have looked at the help wanted section

As far as the job postings forum; I think it is a great idea, and I am a bit surprised that more people have not taken advantage of it. If the answer to the above question is something along the lines of "a lot of work," then I would say dump it due to a lack of usage. If it doesn't take much to keep it there, keep it up a while longer.

The DVD forum could be interesting. I do buy and/or watch a fair amount of DVDs, and I certainly could appreciate the technical and film-minded opinions that would be posted there. However, other forums exist for those opinions. Just as Film-Tech does not have a forum for film collecting as there are collector's forums, etc., perhaps it should not have a DVD forum as other forums, DVDtalk, etc. already exist.

Obviously, Film-Tech is not a single minded website, especially considering the inclusion of 's joke-a-thon, but I guess my opinion is that I would not be at all disappointed if Film-Tech did not have a DVD forum.

I also think there are plenty of other websites specifically geared toward DVD and home theaters. Go surf those if you want home stuff....leave this for 35/70 and (OH GOD!) "digital".

Actual effort required? Very little. Setting up a new forum is maybe 15 minutes worth of work and then it runs itself, provided there isn't much moderation that needs to be done. I'll leave the job forum open for another few months and see how it goes.

The best argument I've heard on setting up a DVD type of home cinema forum here is because so many home cinema gurus have no idea as to the proper way to set up their systems. How many times has someone come out of a theater to complain "the THX isn't on." How many times has that person said "well in my THX certified home theater, I can hear the dialogue from every speaker". Clearly there are many that haven't a clue and that is why the idea to possibly host a forum here is brought up, to explain how things are supposed to work.

Phil brings up the other occasional request, to separate the DLP type of cinema threads into their own forum and get those discussions out of the Film Handler's Forum. Many people have requested this. Opinions?

I may be wrong, but I think the vast majority of members (and probably lurkers too) are interested in the business of film. I would have no interest in DVD.

If the Help Wanted/Seeking Employment forum isn't too much work, I think you should keep it. I know that if we needed someone for the booth or the floor, we would consider a member of the forum first, because we know they have an interest in the first place.

As the number of members on this excellent website grows, the forum can be of even greater benefit to both those who are looking for work and those who are looking for reliable help.

Brad, I too think that you should leave the help wanted forum, but perhaps you could bump it to the bototm of the list (below joke-a-thon...)

As for the DVD idea, I say just put a few links to credible sites in the links section and be done with it. Anyone with a question from Film-Tech can refrence that.

I say it would be fine to link to a DVD forum but not to host one on Film-Tech. It would attract a lot of users that are only interested in DVD and have no real knowledge of how real cinema works. Plus, DVD can be discussed in Yak!

I say post links to quality DVD-oriented sites, and maybe cross-promote film-tech with some of those sites if you want (you may not want to, I don't know). But I would resist the temptation to host a DVD or home-theater forum here.

If the job postings forum isn't costing you much effort, I would vote for leaving it. Though it seems strange that it isn't getting more action.

For that dreaded but inevitable day when film takes a back-seat to digital, have you reserved an appropriate new domain name? Maybe something like d-cinema-tech.com?

The only time I get into DVD related talk is in terms of offering my review of a film I missed in the theater (such as "Mulholland Drive"). I think Film Handler's Movie Reviews is a good enough place for that.

I think sites like Home Theater Forum do a good enough job on offering a wide variety of discussions on setting up hardware, reviewing DVDs and discussing equipment related to DVD Video, DVD Audio, HDTV and other items like that.

About the only thing lacking there is a good discussion on shooting your own digital movies. Geez, one can do a good job with this for not all that much money. For under $10,000 you can buy a Canon XL-1s 3CCD camera with tripod, a Steadicam Jr., a good light kit, some basic sound gear (a couple lav mics and a DAT recorder) and perhaps a new dual CPU 1GHz MacG4 running Premiere, After Effects and iDVD 2.0 and you are all set for making videos that qualify as professional quality. Damn, maybe I could walk into the bank with a little business plan and get some investment capital......

I think a DVD forum would be a good idea. I take the point that lots of them exist already and that this site is mainly about film, but there have been times when, from the point of view of someone comparing DVD with film, I've wanted to know how good or not a particular release is before buying it, especially with rep titles.

For example, issues like contrast and sharpness of picture, whether a film is complete or not, which one of a number of versions the DVD has been mastered from and other technical factors are things that I'd be interested in reading people's thoughts on, but which non-technical people just buying DVDs for entertainment probably wouldn't want to know about.

Example: I recently bought a recent DVD rerelease of 'The Phantom of the Opera'. It was way too slow (around 16-17fps I'd guess), untinted, the two-strip Technicolor sequence was b/w, the transfer was generally shitty (from an umpteenth generation 16mm reduction print I'd guess) and there were a lot of other faults, all of which would have stopped me from buying the disc had I known about them.

I,m with the rest on this ,even though I collect and have a DVD Home Theatre my main interest is in the Film Aspect of the Industry and it's presentation and while Video Projection is starting to make an impact, Film has been around for over 100 years and in another 100years I hope there will be a flickering Carbon Arc Projector Entertaining a crowd somewhere in the World

I, too, am surprised the Help Wanted/Seeking Employment forum is not more popular than it is. Please keep it! I may need to take advantage of it when I finish school next year!

As far as DVD/home theater, I would be interested in such a forum. I know next to nothing about home theater technology. Although there are dedicated sites for such things, it would be nice to know how home theater compares to cinema, and to get opinions of people who are film-oriented. When a customer says "But on my THX home theater, blah blah blah blah...." I'd like to know why it is they're saying whatever it is they're saying.

I would also be interested in a DVD forum. Not so much for audio component setup but for people's opnions on specific DVDs. For instance, when there are five diffrent editions of a DVD (the director's cousin's best friends Special Edition Cut) which one should I buy? Which has the best special features, commentary, etc? I don't like the idea of wasting my money.
