someone spoke of an akira re-release in the film info forum. When was this film re-released? The only version I can recall was the '88 dolby A release.Josh

Akira was re-mastered and re-translated for its July 2001 DVD release. It got a small theatrical release at the time to promote the DVD. BTW I have the metal box two-disc special edition DVD set. Pioneer did a magnificent job on the feature and all the extras.

Pioneer sure did...the only problem I have with that DVD is that there is TOO MUCH edge enhancement to the point that there is edge halo-ing. Other than that..whatta great disc set.

I hate the metal box. I really like the normal (non-WB) DVD cases. Those are, by far, the nicest DVD cases I have yet seen, and they are used as cases for PS2, GameCube and to some extent X-Box games as well. What's next, a DVD case that has a combo lock on it? Lame.

Those cardboard Warner Bros DVD cases suck. Even New Line has switched over to the plastic " Keep Case " why can't Warner?

As long as WB keeps selling their DVD's at a cheap price I'll live with the case. But they do suck.

For the record, I knew about the 2001 or whatever rerelease, I even have the metal boxed set DVD. But it was my understanding that the only theatrical release they did was digital, according to what I heard.Josh

When "Akira" was first released in Japan its print inventory included 70mm 6-track Dolby A mag prints. I can't recall ever seeing any U.S. bookings of the 70mm prints.The DVD is pretty cool. I wanted the 2-disc metal case version and managed to find a copy in a mall in Aurora, CO last year when I was visiting my parents in Colorado Springs. I happened to see it on the store shelf priced at $29 (instead of $40) so I bought it. The Dolby Digital 5.1 track is fairly good, although I doubt it has much resemblence to the original 4.2 mix.
