Beckham redeemed himself long before the finals , especially when he scored the winning goal against Germany in the qualifiers.
Even better news this morning France have just been knocked out and are on their way home. 
Argentina -- the pre-tournament favorite to hoist the Cup -- drew and crashed out.
USA go through with a win or draw Friday vs. Poland. (Split loyalty here; I'm Polish on my mother's side.)
BUT . . . South Korea 1 - 0 Portugal
Portugal were 2 men down for most of the 2nd half and crashed out.
THUS USA are through to the second round.
Knockout play starts tomorrow (6/15) with Germany vs. Paraguay and Denmark vs. England. USA face Mexico on 6/17.

And while all this is going on, England are on the verge of winning their first serious test series for ages, and no-one is taking any notice 
Don't despair ! Perhaps it's the lack of attention that's not stressing out our gallant cricketers and helping them to win

leo, the england cricket series did make it onto the australian news (tv), more out of disbelief though , have they not been screening it on english tv ?.
BTW, even more disbelief - we won the last game! I thought Sri Lanka were going to play it safe and dig in for a draw, but in the event they piled on the runs quite quickly yesterday, eventually passing our first innings total by 50 before being bowled out with 10 overs remaining in the match. We managed to score that with just six balls to go.

It was a superb end to the game, even managed to get her in doors not to change channels to Coronation Street until we had got the 50 runs required 
BTF Turkey just knocked out Japan so they meet Senegal in the quarter final. the winner of that game plays the winner of the England Brazil game in the semi finals.

Las Vegas isn't getting World Cup coverage in English. So I listened to Mexican Spanish commentary (Univision) as Japan lost to Turkey late last night...

Don't waste your sympathies on the Italians, they are victims of their own arrogance and complacecny.
As has happened many times in the past they have scored relatively early on in the match and then sat back and played a really negative defensive game.They did the same earlier in the tournament against Croatia and were beaten then as well.
The South Koreans played with real spirit and enthusaism , especially when the game reached extra time. Spain, their next opponents, should take note as they are guilty of playing a similar game to Italy.
This World Cup has been really refreshing with some of the emerging football nations eg Senegal making it an interesting few weeks.

Italian club Perugia could release Ahn Jung-hwan after he scored the winner for South Korea against Italy.
Perugia owner Luciano Gaucci has threatened to fire him, according to several Italian papers.
Perugia coach Serse Cosmi doesn't hold a grudge against Ahn, but says there are too many forwards at the club and he'd
prefer to retain an Italian.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Gaucci said: "Enough!
That guy (Ahn) will never again set foot in Perugia!
"I am not going to pay the salary of a guy who has been the ruin
of Italian soccer," it quoted him as saying.
The club's offices were closed and officials could not be
reached for comment.
Ahn has been on loan to the Italian club from K-League club
Busan since the start of the 2000-2001 season, but has rarely
made the starting 11 in two seasons.
His golden-goal winner in the 117th minute against the
three-time champion Italians atoned for a missed penalty in the
fourth minute and two other failed shots on goal.
Ahn said: "When I missed a penalty at the start of the game, I
was crying inside ... it felt like the sky was crumbling down on
me. I thank the coach the most for letting me in the game."
After the goal, "I couldn't hear anything. I was just still for a few
seconds, I couldn't speak."
Ahn said his experience in the Italian domestic league had
prepared him for the big occasion at the World Cup.
"Although we won on my goal, I think I should thank Italy," he
said. "I didn't play much, (but) I've learned a lot and had tough times during my two years in Italy. I think that has helped me play
gtood matches in this World Cup."
As some English papers headlines said his scoring the golden goal was a
"Bad Korea Move!"
Ah well only four years to go until the next time....

At least people might now concentrate on the one-day triangular series which starts next week (England v. Sri Lanka on Thursday), in which the England cricket team should hopefully build on their test series win.
And there's Wimbledon, which Tim Henman will sure lose gallantly...
John P. Commiserations to USA , they were by far the better of the two sides. Now it's down to S. Korea to take out the Germans and give us the chance of a Brazil v Korea final.

Watch out for those South Koreans. They could make it interesting, but I think Germany's height advantage will be the difference. Looks like we're looking at Germany-Brazil in the final.
