Here in Salt Lake City, UTah, and probably in other cities as well, there is growing concern about a scene in the film "like Mike". The scene involves how the main character, played by "lil bow bow" (i hate rappers), where he gets his "magic shoes" by retrieving them from a live power line.

The community here is upset with this depiction, as the target audience is young enough to believe that this is a good thing to try at home once this crappy movie is over.

Fox has issued a statement saying that this film is a "depiction of magic shoes, and not meant to be taken litteraly. Fox in no way condones the fanciful actions depicted in the movie". If they don't condone it, then maybe they should have thought about this one.

Most parents just drop thier kids off at the theater without supervision.

My thought is this...

...If some kid is dumb enough to climb a power line and retrieve a pair of shoes, let em fry!!! Thats one less person on the government cheese.

Perfect example of natural selection. We'll look forward to that in the next Darwin Awards.

Nothing like tossing a little chlorine into the gene pool every once in a while!

The uproar isn't coming from the "family values" crowd. It's coming from the power companies.

FWIW, Fox thought about opening Like Mike yesterday but found out a Tuesday opening would have given bookers a collective heart attack.

Some theatres are posting disclaimers at their box offices as a public service announcement on behalf of the power utilities reminding guests of the dangers of overhead powerlines and to not retrieve anything from them.

I agree with Dave, take some personal responsibility and let's clean out the gene pool.

Anyone remember "The Program"? I worked at a theater that played it only for its first 2 weeks, so we didn't get to deal with the replacement reel with the scene taken out. We had some drunk frat boys lie down in the street in front of the theater though!

It seems every day I get another "oh geez" example of just how STUPID people can be. Count me in as one more vote for a clearing house of the geen pool.

Dave,
Don't forget WHERE you live....the city full of weenies, geeks, and religous morons. I live here too and its all part of the local scene, game, or what ever you want to call it........Of course someone here is going to bring up something stupid like that. Would you expect anything less? Is there anyone that CAN clean out the genepool in this town??

I wasn't gonna bring this up, but Mark (the Salt Lake "native" ) cleared the way: Do they even allow rap music there? After all, if the New Orleans Jazz wouldn't have moved there, they prolly wouldn't know what basketball or rap music is.

I've always heard that a pair of tennis shoes hanging from the powerlines meant that a drug dealer lived in the house the lines served. The "magic powers" that lil bow wow receives as a result of these shoes is a CLEAR and UNDENIABLE reference to the professional sports teams and their embrace of performance enhancing illegal drugs. I, for one, am going to post notices that, though FOX thinks that this is an acceptable lesson for todays youth, we in no way condone drug use. Flubber, on the other hand, should be legalized.

Phil,
I agree with you to a point, but SLC seems to have more than the normal share of Religeous morons, and from these folk stem more than the normal number of geeks, and weenies that a city normally has. It actually makes living here somewhat amusing at times as the morons and geekness transmit over into the politics of the whole operation. This really becomes fun to watch and is quite different than the stuff that spills over to politics in other cities......anyway you get my drift.
You can play RAP music here but not on a certain section of Main Street as you will get arrested. That certain section of Main Street also has a dress code as well and if you don't meet it you will be escorted out!! Quite rediculous for a public place if you ask me.....
Mark
P.S. I am a Chicago Suburb native, not SLC. That makes all of this all the more amusing.....

Yes Mark, I have a way of clearing out our gene pool here. A good dose of Democrats ought to do the trick. We don't have enough here.

And oh yes, aren't we the only city in America where a private church, who happens to just about run the place, actually own a piece of public land. Our locally owned and operated church here purchased an actual street, cutting off traffic for a whole block, and turned it into a religeous oasis from hell.

But it really is very cute though, I mean the whole thing just makes me laugh. Living here is quite a hoot.

Dave and Mark,

You need to read the FAQ and stop your insulting and insensitive comments. A good friend of mine died as a teenager from electricution. He was trying to clean toilet paper out of a neighbor's tree and there was a live, uninsulated power line running through that tree. He was NOT an idiot who deserved to be removed from the gene pool. Do any of you know someone who died in this type of accident? And even if you don't use the word "Mormon" in this thread, I feel that unbridled and distorted, anti-Mormon statements on this forum are entirely inappropriate. There are bad apples in any church you want to name.

There was a segment on the local news about "Like Mike" yesterday regarding that scene. The Florida Power and Light company was concerned, but the news people interviewed kids as young as 8 who knew not to go near power lines. No notices were posted at any theaters as far as I know. Living in the lightning capital of the world, kids around here know not to play in the rain, either.

Greg,

I am very sorry to hear about your friend. That was unfortunate.

As to the topic at hand, the forum rules state very specifically not to insult another member directly. Mark and Dave have not done this. Neither of them said "every person in this city/state is an idiot". At that point the comment would have included you AND themselves, but that was not the case. If I was to moderate this forum every time someone felt a crack was being insinuated, I would never get any sleep. If all the Mormons of the world register and are a part of this forum, then at that point I would moderate any comment made toward a Mormon. However, my most logical choice in moderation has been to ONLY concern myself with active forum members. (Translated: if a particular person is not an active member or EVERY person in a particular group of people, be that "group" a company, religious organization, the government or just whatever constitutes a "group", then I don't worry about it.) That's the way it has always been and will continue until a better alternative comes along that will not turn this forum into such a politically correct place that it becomes annoying to read.

That being said, I do feel Greg is right that "there are bad apples in any church you want to name", so perhaps the guys could please tone it down a notch. I don't think they made the comments to be intentionally insulting.

Sorry to hear about any death. I take death very seriously, but I also make very sarcastic remarks regarding it as well. I do with just about anything I talk about.

I will point out that while I do make anti-republican remarks, I am in fact republican. Also while I do make anti-mormon comments, I am also very very mormon myself. I was born and raised a mormon. I have served in my ward primary, sunday school, and elders quarum presidencies, as well as ward clerk. It is just like all those black comedians who make sarcastic jokes about black people.

I am most decidedly not Anti-Mormon however. Although Mormon, I am also Agnostic, and very, very sarcastic about my own upbringing. I do apologize if it offends anyone, and in the future, will try to make sure that any posting has the disclaimer "I AM A MORMON" attached to it.

I do love the life here in Utah, although I am a native of California. California isn't nearly as interesting as Utah politically or religeously, but there are more earthquakes there.

As for electrocution, I have known two very close friends who have died by it, so yes I understand. I myself have had enough voltage and amps pass through me to run a projector for a decade. I have had very close friends die from all sorts of things, ranging from cancer to cement trucks. This does not keep me personally from laughing at lifes little quirks and foibles. I do not laugh at death, but I do stare it down in the eye and send it on its merry way.

I make fun of my own brushes with death. The first when I had my brain tumor, the second when my car flew 200 feet off of a cliff, the third when I fell 90 feet rock climbing, the fourth and fifth during bouts of pnuemonia with temeratures exceeding 106, the sixth when I was hit by a jeep and thrown about 60 feet landing on my head, the seventh when I fell down two flights of concrete stairs and cracked my head open, and probably others I cannot remember at this time.

You see I take this death thing very seriously. When I learned of the possibility of people getting killed copying something from this movie, I myself was personally shocked that the studio would not see this coming. I also however recognize that todays child and teen population is grossly uneducated and vastly unsupervised. It would be shameful if anyone died trying this stunt. My comment was meant totally in the interest of sarcasm and comedy. I do not wish for the death of anyone at all, ever. Not even that evil man who raised me from a pup and keeps asking me over for christmas.

So once again Greg, please understand I meant nothing serious by it, and I am sorry than any inferrence was taken that it was serious.

From your kind and humble servant of god (brad miller),

Dave

Uhmmm, you might want to put a winking smiley on that last line there Dave to let people know you're just poking fun.

By the way, have you ever seen "Unbreakable"? Perhaps you are the Bruce Willis character???

Atually when I saw Unbreakable, I did rather wonder, as did everyone else I know that saw it. However I am not totally willing to see if thats the case with me. Just my like, that would be the point where I die.

Brad, I never actually tried to make a little smiley winkey thing. Before I sound like a total idiot for not knowing how to do it, tell me how I do it, becuase I don't want to spend all day figuring it out. FEED ME KNOWLEDGE.

Dave,
When you write of your "sarcasm" and of being "sarcastic", I think you're being too hard on yourself. I take most of your comments to be
"satire" and you, "satirical."

When Jonathan Swift wrote his "Modest Proposal", advocating a solution to the population problem in British-controlled Ireland,
he advocated the fattening of Irish babies for the English dining table, and he included detailed recipes for the chefs. This had the desired effect upon the British public, awakening them to the suffering of the Irish by famine and misrule. Swift is considered a master of satire, whose positive purpose is to improve understanding
or society; sarcasm, on the other hand, seeks to wound in a way that is cruel and offers no rebuttal.

I consider you a satirist!

As for emoticons, sadly many readers seem to need them to recognize
satire. Especially for those newbies who "tuned in late", don't know the writer, or need gesture and winks and nods to convey true meaning.
I printed Brad's emoticon chart twice, and misplaced it both times,
and never seem to realize one can open a second window and work from that, so I usually think "to hell with cutsie-poo--if they don't get my meaning, it's their problem." That's a lazy rationalization, though. I should use them when in doubt.

Gerard

Thank you for your support Gerard. Yes true I am hard on myself when it comes to sarcasm, as I do consider myself rather thereof. As for satire, I thank you for your belief in me as a satirist. Perhaps I will adopt that as my new rational for bieng.

Naw.

Brad, I am dizzlecksik!! I CANNOT READ OR WRITE!!! I am just like about every average american male that throws away the instructions because "I know how to work the dang thing"! However, sadly, as most american males go, I have no clue how to program a vcr, much less read important documents.

I just figured because I am so damn funny and all that I can do whatever the hell I want to.

YA, RIGHT!

Greg,
I made no unbridled and insensitive statements about Mormons any place in my posts. I would not do that here or on any other forum. I am engauged to a Mormon gal, I work with some really nice people that ARE Mormons(some by their own choice are no longer Mormon though). The Main street issue will always cause poking at, and making fun of, the "church" in one place or another. What happened there is appalling to say the least. That land, that block of main street, belongs to me, to you, to Dave, and everyone else that posts here. It is public land plain and simple. Not something that can just be sold off by some corrupt politicians........
While I pretty much stay away from politics I have to chuckle again about Mayor Andersons statement the other day that billions of dollars have been spent on improvements in downtown Salt Lake City and no increase in usage, no increase in shopping sales, etc., has come out of it. Well again you can thank the Mormon Church and their backwards ways for that too. Geez man the sidewalks roll up at 5PM on Saturday for almost all buisnesses here. Few, if any useful stores are open on Sunday except the large chains. So, of course, making use of all this nice new downtown shopping space on days when folk have time to use it is for naught. Apparently, our Mayor, and the previus one, are indeed VERY stupid for ever promoting and building all this billion dollar space in the first place. Da, if ya can't use it how will it ever make money?? Indeed, living here really is a hoot!! The folk that run this place account for alot of that hoot....

I too am very sorry about the death of your friend. Its a horrible way to go I'm sure. I however take death quite differently from many. To me, when its your time, its your time. At that point most likely, someone far more powerful has more important work for one to do than hanging out here on planet earth.
Mark @ GTS

Lil Bow Wow was on Letterman the other night to promote the movie and he was actually entertaining and could speak in real sentences. Mention was also made that he's not "lil" Bow Wow any more, but just simply Bow Wow (Letterman: "You're not exactly 'lil' any more, so now you're just Bow Wow.")

At least the kid is in a PG-rated family film with a positive message, which is more than you can say for most rappers.

I think Eminem is super talented and a savy business person. While I do not agree with his hate spue, I certainly think he is being managed to take advantage of making the most $. It will be interesting to see what he has to personally say in 10 or 15 years from now when his light fades from the public.

Marcus theaters has put a notice at their box office that said something close to, "Retreiving items from an overhead areial is dangerous! Call your local utility." I guess covering all possible angles never hurt anybody. Although most of the power lines in my community are buried.
