No emoticons = no joke. The rules aren't that hard. They are there to keep things fair. I've learned over the years to anticipate what people will do, hence the reason why they are so thorough. Besides, Film-Tech T-shirts are unavailable in stores!

The idea here Scott is to get the members to self-police themselves. Since there cannot be someone monitoring that thread every minute of the day with the correct answer, this helps to make sure members don't just make random guesses.It looks like Dave has our afternoon viewers stumped. I have no idea what movie that is from myself.

Quick question - what if the quote appears in two (or more) movies? For example I was pretty sure Dave's quote also appeared in Annie. I don't remember where exactly, but I think it was near the beginning. Of course I haven't seen Like Mike and I don't have a copy of Annie available (and haven't seen it recently).I decided it would be appropriate to ask this question now, and have an answer, in the event something similar happens later on.

It is possible to have one qoute from different movies. I am sure that the movie it came from is up to the person stating the quote. Brad, would you be moderating that in the case of a tie? My thought is that if the quote comes from two movies, then the movie stated from by the qoute giver should win out. However, no points should be deducted if, and only IF the person giving the wrong movie can prove that the quote does appear in a different picture as well.

I think that it should be OK if either movie is stated. Otherwise, what's to prevent people from intentionally picking quotes which are in 2 movies, and then just saying, "No, it's from the other one," whichever one that may be? Of course, if anyone is going to be that devious and put that much effort into this game, then they've probably earned that t-shirt.By the way, John, I'm impressed.

Here is a good question for ya...The rule is that if you stump the crowd for 24 hours you get to answer your own qoute and place another...
In this last case, no offence to john, we had just about 32 hours from the time he posted to the time he answered. What happens if someone say looses their internet connection for a few days, or someone just forgets about it. We could have total game limbo if no one figures it out.
My question is, should there be a time limit for the original poster after the 24 hours is passed to answer his own qoute? And if so, how long? I know I kept checking every half hour or so to see if there was an answer so I could get to work on the next one.
Remember, some of us are pathetic and have no life.

See, I KNEW there would be things I didn't think of.Let's say this, if the thread sits for 48 hours, the person who stumped us only gets 5 points and the next person after 48 hours has passed may post a new quote. The person and the quote who stumped us can reveal it in this thread.

I think another rule we need to add is that if someone identifies the quote, but fails to post another one within 30 minutes, another member may start things back up with a quote.

No offense to the posters so far in the actual contest thread, but I do have to say that some of the examples so far are rather vague and quite forgettable as far as quality movie quotes go.At least one of Brad's examples "*****, Booby, I'm your white night," is a unique enough film quote that it will jar anyone's memory who has seen it already.
Anyway, if the quotes are too vague, then it may allow a handful of participants or maybe even one or two to monopolize the thread. Meanwhile many others will just tune out. Like I said, I think the quotes have to be good quality quotes and not just a throwaway thing someone might have said in any number of movies.

Well we cant just use only quotes used in the press releases, but I agree there has to be some sort of rule on just how memorable a qoute should be.For instance, maybe it has to be some sort of turning point in the film, or something so memorable that it made the whole world laugh for a minute or two.
Credit to john though, I do remember the night shift qoute, NOW, that he said it was night shift. I just watched that movie not three months ago and I kept thinking it was kevin spacey in big kahuna. BUT I DONT GUESS..... I KNOW....

as for the new one thats there, I can count about thirty movies given the time where a qoute nearly as close was used, but I know I know the movie it came from, and I know it cannot be that obscure.

I myself had no idea what that was from. But I do remember other quotes from movies within the alotted time frame of 1980 onwards.
It's just what you know...you may not, but someone else probably will.
If no-one gets today's, I'll move forward into the years or post something like 'How can I be the One? I work in a pizza parlour!' to give someone else a go.
No offense taken here, but it's not really my fault if others don't know it...is it? They have to be from major release movies (tick) since 1980 (tick).

Well, part of the fun is to TRY and stump the other members, but again it can't just be any old random sentence from a movie. It should be humorous or memorable in some fashion, but preferably not from the trailer or tv ads. That being said, once I actually get my first quote (so far I haven't known ANY of them) I'll start attacking with my own unique quotes. Lookout John, I need a Film-Tech T-shirt too! 
By the way John, that "boobie" quote was from a little known film called "Die Hard". If I had've put the character's name "Hans" instead of a blank, that would have given it away almost immediately.

The scary thing is...while I haven't been following the thread, after looking it over, I knew most, if not all, of John's quotes...not so much the others!I quote many lines out of NIGHT SHIFT...a great Ron Howard movie, in my opinion. It was also a Dolby Stereo film when they weren't more than 20% of all features. It also pretty much launched Michael Keaton's career.
Staying alive is a film that I also know just because I ran it (in 70mm no less).

T'aint nuthin' scary about that Steve. Night Shift is also a favourite of mine. If there was ever a career launched by an entrance into a film, it would be singled out as Keaton's entrance into the morgue 'singing' Jumpin' Jack Flash. I have been hoping now that it is on DVD that Warners would re-release the CD soundtrack but nothing yet. I LOVE Rod Stewart's (original, folks) version of That's What Friends Are For in the credits. I could never understand why they never released it as a single...then years later they did, but with Dionne Warwick and friends and it stayed at number one for what seemed like months. I have a great LPP on 16mm...I should crank that boy up again soon.
BTW, I'm glad my Romancing The Stone quote was picked so fast by Dave. I switched everything off and went to bed then while I was lying there I remembered it wasn't a bus station he was going to take her to, it was a telephone.
What would happen in instances such as those, Brad?

That is a good question. What if the qoute you give you think is perfect, but then later you realize it is off by a word or two?Although, I got the qoute as Romancing the Stone is one of my all time favorite films.

The movie title was "Bushwhacked", not "Bushwhacked!" or "Buchwhacked?" Dave, I hadn't thought of Google when this game first started, but it didn't take me long to put it all together that was your secret to kicking ass in this competition. Hence the reason why I have been working overtime to beat you!
David, I've never even heard of the movie Zombie, but I did recognize the line right off of the bat as Pet Sematary. Google isn't always needed, but kudos in figuring out the secret! Now this game will get even harder. Just remember, you could've had a T-shirt knowing that little tidbit of information you just posted.

Pet Sematary, spelt this way because the spelling on the sign to the cemetary was spelt wrong. Referanced in the book and shown in the movie. If I remember right the ending was changed in the movie from the book but it has been a while since I read the book or have seen the movie.

What is with all the "Tank Girl" and "Bushwacked" quotes? I thought one of the rules about the contest was that the movies had to be something that people actually paid to see at all. Those two are bombs. I didn't bother with "Tank Girl," even if it was in DTS.If it is just going to be obscure cult films and flops, the contest may continue as a Brad and Dave thread. I'm not saying to make the contest easy. But how about having some of the participants pull some quotes from movies that had something resembling an audience?

Dave started playing evil by using a search engine, so it's only fair that I be evil in return by quoting movies that no one has seen. By the way Dave, what do you mean "try and kick your butt"? Who ever said I have to try to do that? By the way, the rules only stated that the movie must have been in wide release in the US for a period of no less than 2 weeks between 1980 to present. Just think of how many BOMBS only played for 2 week engagements. Besides, there is no way to moderate popularity, unless you know of a website that lists how much money a movie made domestically (and for the rules to be changed to say that the movies must have made X number of dollars.) Come on Bobby, join us!

I would join, but no matter how hard I try, I just can't make it through a viewing of "Bushwacked" or "Tank Girl" without running into my backyard screaming, "make it stop!" I try real hard to imagine how Lori Petty looked in "Point Break" just to make it more tolerable. But it just isn't working.I'll stay tuned and maybe be able to jump on a quote from another film, but so far I am scoring a big fat goose egg on the thing.

I've seen some quotes sit idle for a few days at a time. Let's instigate a new rule...If a quote remains unanswered for 48 hours (according to this forum's clock), then anyone may post the next quote. That person will not get credit for "answering" the last quote since they didn't really answer it, but it will at least keep the game rolling.
One exception, it has been 2 1/2 days since David Stambaugh posted. Let's give him this one time a full 72 hours to answer his quote, claim his points and post another. (Hurry up David, you've stumped everyone but you don't get the credit until you post the answer. )

Hey, it was the movie that spawned the most successful blue cartoon characters of the 80's!!! Regal played that year after year (the same print!) for their Free Summer Kids Film Fest doojiggy. Every year it got a few hundred feet shorter, heh.

Apologies if this issue has been covered (I haven't read each and every post in this long thread).If there's a discrepancy between what a published screenplay has a character saying, and what the character actually said in the finished film, I would assume that the actual spoken dialog would prevail. The reason I'm bringing this up is sometimes a film's dialog as published in a screenplay differs somewhat from the dialog as actually spoken in the film.

I don't know about the Gilbert Grape quote. However, I was pretty sure someone would have picked up (rather easily) the quote I put up from "Insomnia". I'm surprised no one did, considering it was pretty much the quote that illustrated the theme of the film. Too bad I was out of town and couldn't add another quote under it. At least I picked a quote from an arguably popular film rather than an old cult movie few people have seen.

At any rate, you would have to acknowledge there is a good amount of quotes coming from cult films few have seen, dreadful big budget bombs and other trashy shows many would have only seen significant bits of only by accident while flipping through cable channels in the wee hours of the morning. However, I do have sympathy for any projectionist who must sit through a really terrible movie to verify the print is okay (but even in that case, there are ways to "ease your pain", hehe).
Some examples I might include as being "obscure" are:
Transformers: The Movie
Bushwacked
Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man
Remo Williams (aka, the Adventure Ended before it began)
Tank Girl
Johnny Mnemonic (shoulda been Johnny Pneumonia)
Band of the Hand
Blood Diner
Smurfs and the Magic Flute (???)
Sure, these movies (and others I didn't list) have played in theaters after 1980. But how many people really watch shows like that and remember the quotes? I could easily pull out some mid 1980's film no one remembers and try to corner the contest. But that wouldn't be very fun. To me, it seems a little more fun to stump someone on a film like "Insomnia" so they think to themselves "I should have known that, damn!"
Aw hell, to be fair, I did post a quote from "Mystery Men!"
