Is it just me, or is this by far the worst year of movies Hollywood has ever put out? Just take a look at some of the fabulous offerings from the three month period of August to October.Spy Kids 2
Two bumbling kids save the world again with more CGI than Phantom Menace. Umm yeah whatever. (Robert, you need to stop this stupid kid crap and go back to making the GOOD movies you used to make. Leave the kiddie movies to Disney.)
The Country Bears
Ok so this is the exception to the rule regarding kids movies and Disney. A bear cub joins a bear band to save a bear concert hall in a stupid bear movie. PLEASE!!! (Points go to the person who cut the trailer together for killing off any chance at business whatsoever.)
Master of Disguise
Dana Carvey proves once again how little comedic talent he has. I dare you to watch this. I DARE you!
Blue Crush
Two slutty women who have nothing else to do with their time but surf enter a surf competition. Expect a sex scene, because these kind of bad movies wouldn't be complete without one.
The Adventures of Pluto Nash
A man struggles to keep control of his nightclub from mafia control in space. Oh yeah, THAT's a good idea! What in the hell is wrong with Eddie Murphy? What was he thinking? Why? Why? Why?
They
A student realizes that everything which scared her as a child could be real and it might be coming back to get her. Oooooooooooh, I just can't wait for this one! The title alone tells me they put a lot of thought into this script.

The government recruits a bad actor (Vin Diesel) who is obviously a druggie and is stoned 24/7 for a top secret mission, complete with godawful special effects and bullshit scenarios. If this movie were a porno, then maybe, just MAYBE it MIGHT be tolerable in some fashion. Of course Vin Diesel has got to go either way.
Jonah: A VeggieTales Movie

Pokemon #4
More torture for those who somehow got out of watching the vegetable movie. That yellow Pikachu needs a nice red bloodbath.
The Ring
A videotape makes the phone ring and tells people they have only one week left to live. A reporter and her son decide they don't want the videotape to kill them and of course figure out why before the movie is over so they will not die themselves. (I actually am guessing the part about how they figure it out and do not die...because Hollywood can't make a movie that ends any other way.)
Jackass The Movie
Didn't we have enough of Johnny Knoxville on his low rent Jackass cable show? This one just screams "Freddy Got Fingered" all over it.
Even art houses are not safe any more...
Full Frontal
Stevey Sodaburger gets cheap industry attention by videotaping his movie on a consumer videocamera...and Lucas drools all over it in the press because "it's digital"! I find it funny that the tagline for this movie is "everybody needs a release". Yeah Sodaburger, more than you know!
Why in the world do we still have customers when this is the kind of CRAP we are running? I don't mean to be too negative here, but is there anything at all to look forward to between now and the time that the repeat holiday package from last year of Potter and LOTR opens?

xXx wasn't really that bad. Not my favorite movie ever but definatly entertaining. I see a sequel in the works, it just ended that way. Special effects weren't bad, actually they were pretty good! As for Vin, I'm not a big fan but he fit this role well...

Actually, I think that this looks to be the best year for film since 1999 (which was groundbreaking). Sure, there have been a shitload of bad movies, but what about all of the great movies? STAR WARS: EPISODE II--ATTACK OF THE CLONES, BLADE II, MINORITY REPORT, and FULL FRONTAL have all been worthy of four stars. In addition to these, we have CROSSROADS, PANIC ROOM, INSOMNIA, THE SUM OF ALL FEARS, and new movies that we still haven't seen by P.T. Anderson, Steven Soderbergh, Steven Spielberg, James Cameron, Takeshi Kitano (if we're lucky), Kathryn Bigelow, Jonas Akerlund, Jonathan Demme, Martin Scorsese, and Brett Ratner. Then there's new Star Trek and James Bond pictures, and two movies starring Julianne Moore. That's a pretty good year.

WB/Castle Rock have sat on Pluto Nash for over a year and will dump it next weekend. From what I've heard it's the worst movie of Eddie Murphy's career.The Country Bears is "Corporate Synergy" run amuck -- take something you've created and make millions of products based on it. This movie is based on Country Bear Jamboree, a kid attraction at Disneyland. Why is the movie tanking? The bears in the movie are in a rock band. Country Bear Jamboree has a bluegrass band.
At least The Master of Disguise had a decent 1st weekend -- Dana Carvey does a GWBush impersonation which the newspaper ads are playing up.
Full Frontal? You can tell what a piece of 
it is when a NY-area megaplex opens it day-and-date with Manhattan -- then drops it after the first week.
Rachel, you're really chipper! Revolution Studios has already greenlighted a sequel for xXx even before the original opens! 
Not only that, New Line pays homage this week to America's newest action hero -- NY metro newspapers have ads today for Goldmember showing Mini-Me as xXx.

I am in agreement Brad. Too much crap, even from seasoned pros like Snotterburger, Loocus, Rodreeggesss, Dissnee, etc.Normally you expect better. With Rodreeggesss, he wants to direct a whole massive series of Spy Kids. He needs to stop it. The problem, while he is getting back to his roots with Once Upon A Time In Mexico, it is shot.. geuss what... on video. DAMN HIM.

Roger Ebert gave xXx 31/2 stars. I found the movie entertaining too.

Full Frontal would not have been the same movie if it had been shot on film and with a budget. If my understanding is correct, this was in mind during the writing of the script. As such I feel that is an unfair comparison. The whole thing with Sodaburger shooting with a consumer videocamera is just a lame marketing thing to me. Because he had quality of the "digital" videotape intentionally degraded all for "artistic purposes", the same quality and "artistic effect" could have been made with an analog videocamera, like VHS. Yet he shot with a "digital" videocamera to get the press hype.Rachel, if I ever am working at a theater that is booked for the sequel xXxXx, will you come screen it for me?

I agree with Brad about that Country Bears trailer. I ran the trailer one weekend (with "Ice Age" I believe) and realized it would turn prople off in droves, so we have not played it since. The movie is booked for next week, so we'll see.For the record, the Country Bear Jamboree is at Walt Disney World, not Disneyland, and it's actually a fun attraction. If the movie would have been animated, it might have been more bearable (sorry).
And, I hear that Disney is making movies based on The Haunted Mansion and Pirates of the Carribean, too. (What, no "Tower of Terror"?)

Even though he was intentionally degrading the quality in post- production, I think that it made sense for Soderbergh to shoot on miniDV as opposed to an analog-based format for a number of reasons. First off, why not? VHS (and even Hi8) camcorders are a thing of the past. Almost all of the new consumer cameras are digital. It would make no sense for him to use one of the older formats. Secondly, the XL1s allowed him to shoot in PAL. Thirdly, the footage existing on miniDV made it easy to suck directly into the computer to edit on Final Cut Pro. Finally, the XL1s gave Soderbergh control over certain variables, such as exposure and white balance, that most consumer cameras wouldn't have. If he had decided to use a professional analog camera, It would have probably been more expensive, less practical, and, most importantly, bigger. In addition to all of this, the XL1s allowed Soderbergh to look at the image in the proper aspect ratio.I also don't think that Soderbergh is the type of person who does things for the hype. If that was the case, I don't think we'd see things like FULL FRONTAL. Also, if he was trying to buy into the whole digital buzz word thing, then why didn't he shoot SOLARIS digitally?

I have the poster in a box around here somewhere 
but yes, it was an obvious attempt to try to cash-in on Murphy's success after '48 Hrs' and 'Trading Places'... and it was a gamble that didn't pay off.

Since Pokemon jumped ship from Warner to Miramax. What about this
idea "Pokemon 5: Meet the Spy Kids on Halloween" Miramax would have three movies in one. If I remember right in "Best Defense". Eddie Murphy and Dudley Moore
never meet in the movie.
On Mr. Soderbergh, Everyone is talking about his next film "Solaris".
He is also the Executive Producer on a film called "Naqoyqatsi" for
Miramax. "Naqoyqatsi" is the third film from Director Godfrey Reggio.
(Koyaanisqatsi 1983, Powaqqatsi 1988). We ran the work prints for
him and the director. The work print looked great and the digital
sound mix from the DD8 was great also.

Actually, The Ring is an American remake of an amazing Japanese horror film called Ringu which is, in turn, based on a Japanese novel that was, in turn, based on a Japanese urban legend. The smartest thing for American filmmakers to do would be to pull another Psycho / Vanilla Sky move and just copy the original. It is Japan's highest grossing horror film ever (and if you're familiar with Japanese horror films, you realize that's quite an achievement), and it has spawned 2 other films, plus tons of movie tie-in merch (in Japan). The film itself is very creepy and subtle in spots...quite unnerving and highly recommended. I really hope Hollywood doesn't screw it up and change anything. I am very much looking forward to the remake.As for The Adventures of Pluto Nash being Eddie Murphy's worst ever, my god, that's quite an achievement, too, isn't it? How in the world can he "top" such gems as Vampire In Brooklyn, Beverly Hills Cop II and III, Harlem Nights, Another 48 Hours, Boomerang, Metro, Holy Man...the list goes on and on. I can count the number of good films he's made on one hand...and two of those are animated.

The good news Brad is that in 10 year's you will not remember this years crap as you rail against that year's crap. One day at the end of a Siskal and Ebert show where everything was crap, Siskal asked Ebert why they even bothered. Ebert thought for a split second and said that 'every now and then, not very often, magic happens. And it's worth sitting through tons of crap in order to be there when the magic happens.'
Meanwhile, while we are all waiting for the magic to happen, I will gladly accept your $8.50.

I watched part of xXx today since this was my first day back at work and I agree with Brad. This movie is a huge, high class special effects, DUD.
I think we've seen this all in the prologues to the latest round of James Bond films.
By the way, where did this yo-yo Vin Diesel come from? This guy is more wooden than Chuck Norris and Charlton Heston combined.
You can't really tell me his real name is Vin Diesel.
No wonder our customers stayed away from this bomb. We did not do anything close to what they expected. We had it on two screens.

Diesel's real name still sounds like something from the credits of a porn tape."Episode II" four stars? It was okay, but certainly not great. The superfast way it disappeared from the theaters (this goes for "Spiderman" as well) is testament enough the movie rated more a two and a half star rating rather than four. "Minority Report" is the only new movie I've seen this summer that I really liked and want to see it again. I haven't had a chance to see "Insomnia" yet, but will just have to wait for the DVD since only the crappy theaters in my area carried it.
It has been a long time since I have seen a truly great film. I can't specifically remember the last time I saw a film that left me with that great movie "high". When you've seen a film that really staggers you, you're sorry the film is over and you can't wait to watch it again.

hmph. Can't say that I'm too excited about getting Pluto Nash, Blue Crush, or Full Frontal this week. 
And oh yeah, I got a call from Technicolor, and was informed that the soonest that we could have a print of Full Frontal dropped off would be 11:30AM on Friday ... nevermind that the first scheduled showtime that we have for that print is 12:05PM, Friday. 
ratfink bastards! ...yup, no 12:05 showtime on Friday... Even more joyous - someone gets to have something of a 'crash course' in print assembly... grrr.....

This film cost $100 million dollars to produce. Good payoff.This is about seven people per screening on average. Great turnout. Must be a kickass film.
Blue crush came in at a respectable 15 million, considering it only cost that much to make.
xXx came in at number one again, and all signs point towards a third week as well.
Thank god for trash.

Pluto Nash will go down as the biggest box-office dud of 2002, by far.Luckily, for every Pluto Nash, you can usually name a My Big Fat Greek Wedding. It's been playing here in Eugene for a LONG time, at the Bijou Arts Cinemas. Surprisingly, Cinemark opened it here this week too. There's a co-op display ad in the paper for it that only lists the Cinemark engagement, even though it's still playing at the Bijou. Kind of a slap in the face to the independent Bijou by the distributor, unless of course Cinemark paid the full cost of that ad...
I passed by Regal Cinema World 8 today around 1PM, and there were maybe 25 cars in their parking lot. Can't be a good weekend for the box office in general.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding is now in over 1,000 theaters -- the Loews New Brunswick also picked it up this weekend.The Regal Barn Plaza in Doylestown PA was busy Saturday because we're in the middle of a heat wave in the Northeast. Barn Plaza is playing most of the mainstream titles and just picked up the arthouse picture Tadpole. I was at the 5:25 show of Tadpole -- it drew about 25 in a hall that seats 60.
Some people do care about quality: Possession opened wide in NYC/LA and limited elsewhere with a better per-theater average than Blue Crush. One Hour Photo opens Wednesday in big cities and should be in suburbs/megaplexes before long. The Good Girl expands Friday from its big-city limited release. Mostly Martha opened strong in NYC and should be in suburbs/megaplexes after Labor Day.

Just peeped next weekend's bookings for the Reading Cinemas in Manville NJ. Pluto Nash is down to 1 show only -- on one of the screens otherwise showing xXx.OTOH Reading gets My Big Fat Greek Wedding back after 3 1/2 months. Howzat? Reading opened MBFGW day-and-date with NYC, full round of shows 1st week, double-up 2nd week, out on 5/3. Now that MBFGW is a national hit Reading gets a new print for a 2nd go-round in Manville.

Hmm ... at my theater, the Adventures of Pluto Nash is already getting 'demoted' to sharing a screen (in our smallest auditorium) with Mr. Deeds (which is outperforming the aforementioned :bs ...for its second week!...and Full Frontal doesn't even get a second week at my theater!
why oh why why why don't those who've booked films realize that it is not wise to book too many non-mainstream movies for a theater in a city that has been referred to as 'the Armpit of Maine'???
(We already have My Big Fat Greek Wedding, and its doing just enough business to justify it having its own screen!)
Um, no. I don't like the city in which I work. For lots of reasons. In a nutshell - it just plain sucks. Glad I'm not living there too!

You know what?I'm quite glad that I live in Maine. I am reminded of this any time something causes me to leave the state, then come back.
Sure, it may seem a little economically depressed, and there may be an overall lack of appreciation for some of the more artistic things I find appealing ... but on the whole, residents here are a lot nicer to encounter, and there are a lot fewer 'shady' characters! "Maine, the way life should be." (It's so true!)
When I went to work this past Thursday, I got a little note - our film booker had called, and wanted me to place trailers for 'the Good Girl', 'Possession', and 'One Hour Photo' - since it 'looked almost definite' that we'd be getting those features in the near future. Whee!
I put trailers for all three of those on my print of Serving Sara, as I got print #8, previously played elsewhere, and no trailers arrived with it, at all. As for S1M0NE, I just tossed on the three trailers I got with it.

You know, I just got in from a special setup at a first run theater tonight and watched the previews on a movie that opens tomorrow. There were 5 trailers and I was about to puke. All five of them were the same damn trailer, all for the same damn movie!!! Hollywood...it's hopeless.

Jonah: A VeggieTales Movie opens this week in English-speaking Canada and most of the US. The Northeast gets Jonah on 10/18; most Northeast theaters booked for Jonah are this week getting Spy Kids 2 back. That's like asking if you want to die in the electric chair or the gas chamber.OTOH Brad will be pleased to learn that Pokemon 4Ever is only opening limited via Miramax. Warner Bros. would have sent Pokemon 4Ever direct-to-video.

There's a new champeen for modern-day opening-weekend flop . . . The Real Cancun. First weekend gross $2.108M from 2261 theaters, per-theater average $932. It actually opened worse than Pluto Nash! ![[Wink]](wink.gif)

Pirates of the Caribbean is Disney's major tentpole for this summer.
There will be a 5th Pokemon movie in US theaters. Miramax dumps Pokemon Heroes in a very limited release opposite The Matrix Reloaded.
Scary Movie 3 also comes to you from Miramax, only in wide release in early October.

Our 7:20 show of Cancun on Saturday night had ZERO prople show up for it. I guess movie goers are a little smarter than some people realize. Thankfully we may never see someone attempt a "movie" like this ever again.

"That American Idol movie" is called From Justin to Kelly -- opening 6/13. It was supposed to go to video 6 weeks later but Fox moved the video date back to September. Why? The Hollywood Reporter found out why: Regal/UA/Edwards, Loews Cineplex and National Amusements threatened to not show From Justin to Kelly unless the video was pushed back.
Then again X2 lasted only 4 weeks in the Hamptons.

John Travolta In Talks For Sequel To Get Shorty
Sequel in works...
Variety is reporting that John Travolta is in talks with MGM to reprise his character, Chili Palmer, in a sequel to Get Shorty
The sequel will have Palmer, a former loan shark but now a movie producer, releasing a movie that bombs at the box-office. He then becomes the agent for a struggling singer, but finds themselves in a quandry when she is found to be pursued by the Russian mafia.
The trade reports that Brett Ratner (Rush Hour)is a contender to direct the sequel.
Beverly Hills Cop 4 Draft Done?
No confirmation at this point...
Ain't it Cool News and Dark Horizons both report a similar rumor that screenwriter Jason Richman has turned in a draft for a Beverly Hills Cop 4. Another rumor reports that Martin Brest will also direct the project, if or when it happens.
There is no confirmation on this yet and is still a rumor.

Bill Murray To Voice Garfield In Upcoming Film
Everyone's favorite fat cat has a voice...
Bill Murray has signed on to provide the voice for Garfield in the upcoming film version of the popular comic strip.
Garfield is expected to be done in CGI, while everyone else in the movie (including Odie and Nermal) is expected to be real. Odie and Nermal will have CGI mouths though.
Breckin Meyer will star as Jon Arbuckle, with Jennifer Love Hewitt playing Meyer's love interest. The story has Jon bringing a new pup named Odie home. But when Jon's jealous cat, Garfield, schemes to get rid of Odie, Odie ends up being kidnapped. Feeling guilty, Garfield ensues on a mission to save his new companion.

Our newest champeen of movies that tank is Marci X. Opening weekend estimate $865K from 1200 theaters -- the minimum number of screens for a wide release. Per-theater average: $720.
Wonder if Sony will re-release Gigli?
