On these forums, and r.a.m.t, there seem to be a lot of people called Scott. I've just done a search, and found six:Norwood
Magie
D. Neff
Oakley
Dorsey
Marshall
There was also John Scott.
Another interest of mine is the inland waterways; I know of no less than nine people in this field called either Mike of Michael, far more than any other single name, but there are no Scotts.
Strange how names and interests seem to go together.

What about "John"? 
You really would need to compare the percentage of each name in the general population to the percentage that shows up in the movie-related groups to see if there really is a correlation.

I think this is just a coincidence. I am interested in film, but not in inland waterways. Well, I am very interested in big ocean sailing ships, maybe there is something behind your observation...

A few years ago, I was pre-registered for the SMPTE Technical Conference in Los Angeles. When I went to the registration desk for my badge, they said John Pytlak had already picked it up! Later, another John Pytlak showed up at the Kodak exhibit to give me my original registration badge, which he had received by mistake. Turns out the other John Pytlak was from Detroit, and works for a supplier of television equipment racks. Looked a bit like me too! Poor guy. 
And yes, I am related to Frankie Pytlak, catcher for the Cleveland Indians baseball team 1932-1940 (caught for hall of fame'r Bob Feller):

The bathroom/W.C./Toilette/lavatory etc. is idiomatically called the "John" (especially by females) in the U.S. What's the colloquial
expression for it in Germany?
Jeanne D'Arc, pronounced "Zhahn Dark" sounds like the illumination in
the indoor plumbing salon is less than 16 foot-lamberts.

I was wondering, too, but I assumed it had something to do with arc lamps.Back to the original thread topic: I think that Scott just happens to be a fairly common name, so it's no surprise that there would be more Scotts, Johns, Barrys, and Tims than, say, Quentins or Gertrudes on this forum. The fact that the film industry is still largely run by men is also a factor here. The latter point is especially true for projection; I read recently that something like only 1% of film projectionists are female, which I found interesting, as I know several female projectionists, all of whom are at least as talented (if not more so) as their male counterparts.
I know that there are several other Scott Norwoods as well; the best known is the former football player for the Buffalo Bills. For a while, I was the only Scott Norwood on the net (at least the only one who had posted to Usenet), although I don't believe that this is the case any longer.
I'm starting to wonder if there is more than one Bob Maar. I mean, how can one guy post all those jokes, anyway?

I see quite a lot of female projectionists, I couldn't put a percentage on it, but I would say they are still in a minority. I think women are are probably more common in projection than in management of cinemas.
Earlier this year I was involved in training a possible future female projectionist; she saw one of my B+H 609 16mm carbon arc machines, and wanted to try running it. I agreed to show her how to do it, as long as she learned to do it properly, not just throw a couple of switches. She managed to thread the thing after a couple of attempts, and had no trouble in striking the arc, and running the film. She forgot to start the feed motor, but realised her mistake and put it right before the arc went out.
I later managed to get her the chance to run a pair of 35mm machines, xenon this time, she can lace up 35mm in frame, and do changeovers pretty close to the correct timing. She wasn't too impressed with the xenons, she preferred the carbon arc. She says she likes me, and she brings Tiny Tears for me to play with; Oh, I forgot to mention, she was four at the time, now five, and had to stand on a box to reach the machines. I did try explaining that I'm a bit old to be Tiny Tears' uncle, but she didnt seem to understand. Anybody want to offer her a job in about twelve years time?

Thanks for clearing that up. I am not so familiar with many colloquial US expressions, so I couldn`t figure that out. There are many colloquial expression for toilet in German, but it would probably lead too far from the topic to list them here and also explain what they mean literally translated. There are no personal names used for it however.

I should like to direct your attention to a movie called "The Tao of Steve" where Donal Logue explains why "STEVE" is representative of all things good and cool. Who can quarrel with with such impeccable logic especially when you have two perfect examples here in your midst? The antithesis, BTW, according the movie is the name "STUART" which prompted a good natured objection from a certain very important client of mine with this name after I screened the movie.

Heh, I'm used to my name always standing out as highly unique....and very frequently mispronounced... 
One fall semester I was taking a drawing class, it met twice a week. Throughout the whole semester the professor pronounced my name correctly a total of maybe, maybe seven times. And in no two classes in a row did he pronounce it the same way.
After about five weeks I finally gave up on trying to correct him.

I don't know if this is true and if so if he's still there, but several people have told me that apparently there is a Colin Enticknap who was/is the chief projectionist in a London arthouse. The odds against two people with such an unusual name having been in such an unusual occupation (and at one point, in the same city) must be at least tens of thousands to one, I would have thought.

The first time anyone said "Garcia", thinking that they were saying my name, was my first day in kindergarten.
The teacher was taking attendance, calling out names in alphabetical (by surnames) order. I think I was fourth (there were 'Alexander', 'Allen' and 'Almeida' ahead of me). She called out "Garcia Babbidge".
I did not respond.
After going through the whole list, and I sat there, not making a peep, until she asked me who I was. So I told her my name. Her response was "I already called your name."
To that I said (rather indignantly too) "No. You said 'Garcia', that's not my name."
The year kinda went downhill from there.
I could already read & write, and we were writing letters, and she was walking around, stopped behind me, took my writing implement out of my left hand, and put it in my right, and told me to continue, which I did continue, but only after switching the implement back to my left hand...
It also didn't help that I was the only kid in the class that knew that there were no such things as Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, Leprechauns, the Tooth Fairy, etc... 
Only too appropriate that I have such a quirky name eh?
