Halloween came a day for me this year, as Thursday was buy with buildups.
I went to a friends place and she cut and bleached my hair, did some makeup, and dressed me in an outfit that she had me put together.
Wanna see?
The pictures turned out a little blurry (dont know why because they were taken with a digital camera so they should have been perfect ) and I didnt smile or anything, so I looked depressed and pissed off, which I was not.

The reactions from my friends were priceless.
Most people did not even recognize me.
But they all thought she did a really good job.

Happy Birthday Paul!! Ohh.. yeah its also Halloween...

Instead of celebrating it today I was in a pre Halloween Bash(small concert). "HIV: Ketchup" Halloween show that commemorates the spooky man who cut his veins and poured his HIV positive blood into the ketchup dispensers at McDonald's.

A big Winnie the Poo Bear was there and a guy was in a Best Buy uniform... Wait... he actually works for Best Buy. But yes, some people actually dressed up.

I thought my close friends, Randy and Aundrea, were the only ones with a wedding anniversary on Halloween. Aundrea chose the day specifically. She's a big fan of The Cure and into some alternative religions.

My wife and I don't have kids but we enjoy halloween Trick-or-Treating anyway.

We both sit on the steps, pass out treats, do a few magic tricks.
(Halloween IS "National Magic Day", doncha' know!)

We also keep up an unofficial "Neighborhood Watch".
We live in a house that's on the corner of two streets. We've got a good, strategic view in two different directions. So, we sit on the steps and enjoy watching the kids while we watch OUT FOR the kids.

This year we had a little fun:
Some schmuck took it upon himself to go around scaring the kids. No, I don't mean that it was some teenage punk chasing after the neighbor kids. It wasn't some drunk asshole running around yelling, "Booga-Booga!"

It was a grown man in a "Quasi-Batman" style outfit with a black mask and cape going around the neighborhood acting like he was trying to catch kids! People screaming and running and all that, from what I heard!

So I grabbed the cell phone and headed around to the neighbors' houses to pass the word out. My wife headed inside to make sure the "Smith and Wesson Security System" was "in working order".

Now, that last sentence may cause you some alarm but let me assure you: It would NEVER be used unless it was necessary to prevent harm. Also, you might wonder why I left my wife alone while I went walking around the streets at night... She knows how to handle a weapon. She's at LEAST as good a shot as I am, if not better! She stayed at home where she could lock the doors and call the cops, if necessary while I went out to spread the word and/or gather information.

Anyway, I heard from another neighbor that the cops picked up some guy a couple streets over from us. We assume they collared the bastard. We don't know until later when we have a chance to read the news and check in with other neighbors.

It's good to know that "Mutual Aid and Defense" still works in this country!

Happy B-day Paul. I too, share this lovely day...and worked 12 hours...just got home.

Strange thing about October: I know 5 people who have birthdays in the last half of the month and one is only 5 days older than me.

Kind of spooky...

Nothing like Halloween birthdays.

My sister's birthday is today, and so is my nephew's.

Scary thing about my nephew: Born on Halloween, named Damian, and has a large birthmark on his head. To top that all off, he's a very devout Roman Catholic. Even speaks Latin.

Has McDonalds even had ketchup dispensers in the last 25 years? As far back as I can remember they have used packets. Wendy's still uses dispensers so that would seem more plausible. I don't even go to McDonalds anymore. I went once in October of 2005, but that was only because I had no other options available to me.

It's Nevada Day too. Nevada was admitted to the union on October 31, 1864. We used to celebrate it on the 31st each year - we were probably the only place where Halloween was a school holiday. But since 2000 we celebrate it on the last Friday of the month.

For Trick or Treat I follow Paul Lynde's old comedy routine of heating up pennies in the frying pan and throwing them to the kids as they come to the door.

The singer died Tuesday morning in a Los Angeles hospital while awaiting a lung transplant, said Goulet spokesman Norm Johnson.

He had been awaiting a lung transplant at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles after being found last month to have a rare form of pulmonary fibrosis.

Goulet had remained in good spirits even as he waited for the transplant, said Paul Goulet, his son.

"Just watch my vocal cords," she said he told doctors before they inserted a breathing tube.

The Massachusetts-born Goulet, who spent much of his youth in Canada, gained stardom in 1960 with "Camelot," the Lerner and Loewe musical that starred Richard Burton as King Arthur and Julie Andrews as his Queen Guenevere.

Goulet played Sir Lancelot, the arrogant French knight who falls in love with Guenevere.

He became a hit with American TV viewers with appearances on "The Ed Sullivan Show" and other programs. Sullivan labeled him the "American baritone from Canada," where he had already been a popular star in the 1950s, hosting his own show called "General Electric's Showtime."

Do you have this post on auto repeat?! Happy birthday once again...

Most of SoCal seems to have taken the day off, presumably because of Halloween. Leaving my son's daycare place at 9.15 this morning after dropping him off, the 67-mile commute from Loma Linda to Hollywood took me only 71 minutes. That is close to my all time record (68 minutes, in the other direction, leaving at about 2.30am on a Sunday morning after a triple bill show that ended insanely late), and the traffic density on both the 10 and 101 freeways was what it usually looks like in the middle of the night. Mid-morning on a weekday, it is rare to do the trip in much under two hours, and usually Waze tells me to avoid that route (the shortest of several options in terms of distance, but very rarely in terms of time) altogether, because the East LA Interchange is almost always totally snarled up.

There is still no picture.
I guess I shouldn't complain as it's only been 3 months since I sent mine in.

Speaking of pictures, isn't it time some of the Film-Tech veterans updated their photos? Or do they not age, unlike the rest of us?

I have no comment on Halloween, which was introduced into Australia a few years ago, although the country got along just fine without it until then. (or did it??)

I grew up in England in the '70s and '80s, where Halloween existed, but was nothing like the major event it is here. Channel Four might play a Universal horror, but that was about it. Aisles full of Halloween crap in the supermarkets, trick or treating and large-scale fancy dress parties simply didn't happen. I suspect that part of the reason (beyond Halloween simply being not such a big part of British popular culture) why may have been that Guy Fawkes Night happened only a week later, and was a big national celebration, with almost everyone either holding or going to a bonfire/fireworks party.

Halloween is a huge merchandising holiday in the U.S., although of the non-Christmas holidays it's not the biggest - Mother's Day and Valentine's Day take top honors. But, since in recent years it's become just as much for adults as for kids (maybe even more-so, given the elaborateness of adult costumes and parties) it's a big deal.

I would say that Halloween is my least favorite "holiday." I don't like the music, the costumes, the horror movies, or any of it. I don't like the orange lights. I do like the candy - although even that is pretty awful sometimes.

Having said that...happy birthday, Paul!

As far as major American holidays go, the 4th of July is the best. Good weather, beer, fireworks. What could be better? Also, no food pressure (you don't have to serve up a fancy meal...burgers and dogs are fine).

Thanksgiving is my second favorite because there is no gift shopping, stupid costumes or silly decorating involved....but Mom can be a nervous wreck due to the meal, and the whole thing can be destroyed by snow in this neck of the woods...so the 4th takes top honors in my book.

Man, the mayhem we could cause with a fourpenny bomb!
It was only a matter of time before it was banned and one could not buy crackers any more.
I know it was still going in New Zealand in 1998 when I arrived in Wellington on the 5th November. I thought they were welcoming me to their country!
