The Gene Siskel Film Center of the Art Institute of Chicago is (via a temporary setup by noted sprocket head James Bond) presenting a weekend of 70mm screenings in December.

Friday Dec 13 & Saturday Dec 14 : Lawrence of Arabia
Saturday Dec 14 & Sunday Dec 15 : 2001: A Space Odyssey
Sunday Dec 15 & Monday Dec 16 : Sholay*

* Sholay, aka Embers, is a 204 minute Indian film from 1975, described as the most popular Indian film ever. IMDb indicates it's a blow-up.

Also, The Music Box Theatre will run "Baraka" in 70mm for at least a week starting January 10.

Where did the 70mm print of Sholay turn up ? Do you have a contact ?

Also is the LOA print mag or DTS?

hehehe...With the accidental double posting I had just edited my post to "please delete" when I saw your reply so I swapped it back around so this is the one that should stay!

Sholay is described as a restored 70mm print and it's part of a larger program called "Contemporary Classics of the Indian Cinema" presented in collaboration with the Indian Consulate General of Chicago.

All three are mag / SR.

SHOLAY is a true hoot of a film (in a very enjoyable way)and truly exemplifies the Bollywood genre (no mistaking it for a Satajit Ray film). The DVD I watched it on was letterboxed (to scope) only for the opening credits and then cut back to around 1.85 for the rest of the film. One source says it was actually 1.33 photography and was cropped to scope and 70mm theatrically, but I'm not sure I believe that source. Anyone know for sure? (I think London's Technicolr lab made the original 70mm print shown in India).

The 70mm screenings at the Gene Siskel Film Center have been cancelled due to the primary sponsor dropping out. The shows will go on as scheduled but in 35mm.

This has no bearing on the Music Box Theatre's upcoming 70mm run of "Baraka."
