Documentary filmmaker Ken Burns will receive the International Documentary Association (IDA) 2002 Career Achievement Award. The presentation will be made during the 18th Annual IDA Awards Gala Benefit in Los Angeles on December 13 at the Directors Guild of America Theatre.

Burns has produced 19 documentaries beginning with Brooklyn Bridge in 1980. He earned an Oscar nomination for that effort and has subsequently received an array of Emmy®, Peabody, People's Choice and other awards and tributes. His eclectic body of work includes The Civil War, Huey Long, The Statue of Liberty, Baseball, The West, Lewis & Clark: The Journey of the Corps of Discovery, Thomas Jefferson, Frank Lloyd Wright, Not For Ourselves Alone: The Story of Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony, Jazz, The Shakers: Hands to Work, Hearts to God, Empire of the Air: The Men Who Made Radio and Mark Twain.

Kodak will be hosting an online chat with Ken Burns on Friday, December 13th from 10:30 - 11:30 Pacific Time. I will post details when available.

Ken Burns just called me and yes, Kodak will be paying Brad's bandwidth for the next 3 months.

That's good to hear. With the upcoming addition of Film-Tech Jr. there's going to be quite a bit of usage, with the movie downloads and all. You know maybe that's what John was talking about when he mentioned Kodak's involvement with Digital Cinema Networks. [Smile]

'Worst case' for a petabyte a month would be about $200k. I'm sure that someone would be willing to charge you more though. Heck, I'll do it for $210k/month, Canadian or US, you pick. [Smile]

For the moderate user, 1PB a year would be about $17k month.

I hope AT&T isn't charging Kodak that much... but I wouldn't doubt it.

Of course even a petabyte a year would work out to about 2.8TB a day... Kodak could only hope the online store was that busy. [Big Grin]

I don't really know, since it is coordinated by our folks in Hollywood. I suspect several hundred participants will try to access it. Since it is a moderated chat with one principle subject, obviously not everyone will get to have their questions answered. Kind of like a popular call-in radio show.

It would almost seem to me like it would make more sense to have a "view only" chat and have viewers email their questions in to a couple of moderators who would then paste the questions one at a time into the room in real time.
