Interesting that the article points out that the last TWO installments of STAR WARS were both shot digitally. Only the last one was, while the previous one was shot on film, with a great amount of digital art work added to the final cut.

Also, the article states that film has twice as much information clarity than digital capture. Last I checked, digital was not that close. Seems like it should be much much deeper for film.

All in all, a great read.

IIRC, one or two scenes in Episode I were shot using the then-prototype Sony/Panavision digital camera system. The rest of it was shot on film.

Aaron is quite right, there is in fact an HDCam scene in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. For those who have the DVD, it occures in chapter 17 at 49:53, where Liam Neeson is taking a blood sample of the kid out behind his home. It really sticks out, it's a nighttime scene and the contrast level drops dramatically, with the blacks quite compressed compared to the rest of the film.

FWIW, I have a Kodak DX3700 digital camera. It's very convenient and takes nice pictures. But for really important pictures, I still shoot FILM! [Cool]
