Gangs of NY has been out for at least 2 weekends in Atlanta as we speak. Yet AMC still does not allow passes for this movie. In the past, the management would let you use your pass when you pointed out a movie has been out for two weekends already (usually 10 days after release). However, when I pointed out this issue regardning Gangs to the manager last night on the phone, he said that Jan 6 is when passes can be used. I even mentioned that on the discount passes, it clearly says that it is AMC's policy to remove the restriction after 2 weekends. He said that he can't do anything. It does say on the passes that AMC examines special engagements on a case by case basis. Which means they could remove the restriction before two weeks. It also adds that it is their policy to remove it after two weekends.

So what is the deal here?

I suspect it may be the deal they setup with Miramax. With Regal, the standard restriction is 10 days, but some bookings will have restrictions up to 30 days (Spiderman) or longer (Star Wars EpII). I believe the studios are behind that. I see it as a possible way to generate higher grosses in the short term.

If that's the case AMC should have had a sign in the box office window. The AMC Hamilton displayed such a sign for Star Wars Episode 2.

Christopher hinted at what Miramax probably did. Where I live Warner Bros. wrangled an 8-week restriction from Reading Cinemas on Harry Potter 2 -- and Reading put up signs in the box office to explain why.
