Hey, I need to create an anti Valentine's Day card for a friend who calls it The Evilest of All Holidays. Anyone know of some suitable graphics online...dead Cupids, etc? [Mad]

New Yorker's love Valentine's Day. Of course , like most Canadians we have good looking women with great personalities. The ones that don't qualify, we send to Chicago. [Wink]

I'll second that! [beer]

edit: I was referring to Bob's "like most Canadians" part. But I'll try to pry my foot out of my mouth anyway.

Daryl --- for those outside the US, the last link is to a photo of the "Saint Valentine's Day Massacre", a mob-related killing in Chicago on February 14, 1929:

The movie "Some Like It Hot" used the event as a plot device.

When I saw this subject line I thought 'V.D.' referred to a type of optical soundtrack introduced by William Fox in 1928. Proves how sad and unromantic I am. There again, it could refer to something very unromantic indeed (of the sort that requires unpleasant medical treatment), so it could be worse...

<- is the kind of person that bakes blood red cupcakes, decorated with a variety of anti-Valentine's Day odds and ends, to share amongst other who wince at the thought of this "holiday" [evil]

The nearest us staid Brits come to those sorts of extremes is an act of revenge being planned on a much unloved colleague who has called what promises to be a long, unpleasant and boring meeting starting at 1600 that (Friday) afternoon. In the hope (and almost certain expectation) that he does not lurk around these parts, I can reveal that the plan is to send him an anonymous Valentine's card. The problem is that the individual in question is almost completely devoid of any sense of humour and so probably won't have a clue what it refers to. But it'll make us feel better.

Posted by Steve Kraus (Member # 476) on 02-04-2003, 06:41 PM:

No, but she does hold an annual Evilest of All Holidays party. I believe this year's theme is vampire movies. Before you cast any aspersions you should know that she loves silent films and 70mm, particularly if she can fondle it. But then who amongst us doesn't enjoy that? [Cool]

Edited: I didn't catch Gracia's arrow; thought she was asking about my friend. Apparently many don't like this "holiday."

Well, mostly I'm just bitter. ...No-one ever sends me flowers or other random tokens of affection on the 14th of February! [Frown]

Then again, it's also a highly commercialized holiday. [Razz] ...and that's poodoo!

I agree about the hard sell: furthermore all the advertising propaganda and the like is designed to make you feel that there's something wrong with you if you're not married or in a relationship, which annoys me no end.

My theory is that this is the greeting card industry addressing a major problem on its hands: that the only time [normal] people buy the things are for birthdays and Christmas, ergo the industry is trying to manufacture more occasions to boost its sales. Well, that stunt isn't going to work with me.

After all, the firework industry only ever shifts any merchandise in the fortnight before 5 October (Make that 4 July for US readers) and it doesn't seem to go bust.

Does it seem to others as it does to me that they (the card, candy, and flower industries) are no longer pushing Sweetest Day as they once did? (Third Saturday in October. Perhaps USA only?) Surely this must have been an artificially concocted holiday so you wonder why they are letting it slide.

Posted by Leo Enticknap (Member # 534) on 02-05-2003, 11:22 AM:

As artificially concocted as the sweets they were trying to flog, I'd say. They probably abandoned it after discovering that it wasn't helping them to sell any more sweets.

There was a story in the paper last year about market research which revealed that sales of tobacco products rise by about 75% in the 24 hours following 'National No Smoking Day'. Presumably the nation's chain smokers fall in with the political correctness on the day itself, and then get their revenge by puffing their way through double their usual intake of fags immediately afterwards!

I always hated Valentine's Day with a raging passion until I got married. My wife is the same way. (Both of us had bad love-life experiences in the past.)

But now I don't mind it! [Big Grin]

I don't like Valentine's Day. The last fun Valentine's Day I had where any kind of Valentine's related stuff was exchanged was in 1980. I've never had a girlfriend and haven't had a date with a girl since 1989 (except for a lunch date in 1992, but that' doesn't really count). The last time I asked a girl out was April 18, 1998. She seemed interested, and when I followed up, she wasn't anymore. That's what I get every time.

It's somewhat depressing to be in the mall on Valentine's Day, seeing guys carrying balloons and Valentine-related stuff, and seeing so many couples walking around together.

I agree. Valentine's Day is evil! [Smile]

I don't mind Valentine's Day if it is celebrated "properly." Basically what is meant by that is I don't want to see those goo-goo eyed couples publicly displaying their affection past the point of good taste. It doesn't go over well around these parts.

Anyone could guess Nevada leads the nation in the per-capita rate of divorce. Oklahoma is good-ol number two in the rankings (we passed up Hawaii not long ago). Bad past experiences abound. Divorces and bad breakups are happening among a number of my coworkers right now. It is a miracle I have made it to my mid-thirties without having any ex-wives or child support obligations.

Sometimes I wonder if all those divorces are just the same few people jumping in and out of marriages with each other at a very rapid basis. The rest of us lonely bastards just watch the melee from the sidelines. Lawton is especially bad for guys since it is one of the few places in the nation where men outnumber the women by a large margin (thanks in part to Fort Sill).

The last I heard, the US census claimed there were 10 million to 15 million more women in America than men. In a lot of cities, women have to live in gyms and diet insanely to be "attractive." In Lawton, a lady can be huge but still wear clothes to show off her bare midriff and even accentuate the beer belly with a gold chain. And plenty of guys will still line up for it. I'm sorry if that sounded shallow and sexist. It's just my perspective as a frustrated guy living in perhaps the worst place any single adult could live.

What is it that makes for a bad singles environment? There are the mitigating circumstances. Lots of repeatedly divorced adults have kids who grow up to get divorced even more. Many people in this state don't make a lot of money. Then you have the meth culture. Southwest Oklahoma is the meth capital of the world. OK used to be a big place for PCP production. One fellow was delivering fully 1/3 of the world's PCP out of his house: a converted, subterrainian nuclear missile silo. But then some teen age girl overdosed at a party there and he got busted.

Biggest problem that defeats Valentines Day in my town? Women don't have shit for opportunities here. They can wait tables, get minimum wage being a bank teller or doing some other office job or work at the topless bars. It is beyond me how a single mother makes ends meet in this place. Women who grow up in Lawton and manage to escape high school and college without being trapped by drugs and kids usually get the hell out of here.

I've got a good job in a shitty town. And Valentine's Day is typically a non-event. At least we have a good 8-plex movie theater here.

I think one of my larger obstacles is the fact that I don't get out & socialize much, due to the hours I work being a projectionist! [Razz]

...it doesn't help that there are a lot of shallow people in the world. It truly irks me when I rejected for simply not being built like a waify little pixie. No human being is perfect, and there's a lot more in life to appreciate to go and get all obsessed with physique / appearance! And as I like to say "I'm not perfect, but parts of me are excellent!" [Wink] [Big Grin]

[evil] As I suspect I'll be working on this upcoming evil holiday, and strongly suspect that I wouldn't be out on a date anyway, I think that I will make some anti-valentine's cupcakes & share them with my co-workers that night!

For All of us Who Are in Love with our Valentine's

Seal It With a Kiss

I can't promise you forever,
but I can promise this,
I'll offer you the best of me,
and seal it with a kiss.

I can't promise that our travel
will be all glad and free.
But Baby, I will love you
with all the best of me.

When rain is pouring down,
and stormy winds are blowing -
When troubled days surround,
we're cold, and it is snowing.
I can't turn off the weather,
or stop the Hands of Time.
But facing things together,
is a comfort we can find.

You can't promise me the Road ahead
will be all fun and light.
I don't ask a thing of you,
except to treat Love right.
If we are faithful partners,
and keep our loving true.
We can weather every storm,
and still keep loving through.

Two can halve the troubles,
and neither stand alone.
Every pleasure doubles,
and everywhere is 'home'.
If we walk on together,
through both the dark and light.
We can weather the weather,
through every day and night.

I can't promise you forever,
but I can promise this,
I'll offer you the best of me,
and seal it with a kiss.

I can't promise that our Journey
will be all glad and free.
But, Baby, I will love you
with all the best of me.

VD - the evilest of all soundtracks! I've had it up to here with VD. Spent a very unromantic morning trying to telecine a shrunk, buckled and vinegar-stricken 1964 schools film about safety near electrical power lines (quite grisly and satisfying - the most irritating little brat of all gets electrocuted when he climbs over the fence of a substation to retrieve his football). The public park in which it was shot is celebrating its 150th anniversary soon and they want to show clips from the film in an exhibition. Thanks to a liberal coating of Filmguard the shrunken stock wasn't too much of a problem for the picture transfer. But the track is VD and because the emulsion has faded to pink, the contrast has been flattened, reducing the s/n ratio to little more than a frying egg noise. Will probably have to try playing it into Cool Edit Pro and applying some noise reduction, but could have lived without the faffing.

That's right Joe, your astrological sign does not have 'Enticknap' in there anywhere.

However it does have (presuming my calculations are correct):
Sun 0°15' Leo (the Lion), in the fourth house
Moon 1°30' Taurus (the Bull), in the twelfth house
Mercury 25°26' Cancer (the Crab) ((retrograde)), in the fourth house
Venus 27°47' Leo (the Lion), in the fifth house
Mars 19°50' Aries (the Ram), in the twelfth house
Jupiter 8°9' Aquarius (the Waterbearer)((retrograde)), in the tenth house
Saturn 28°54' Gemini (the Twins), in the third house
Uranus 19°14' Libra (the Scales), in the sixth house
Neptune 4°49' Sagittarius (the Archer)((retrograde)), in the eighth house
Pluto 2°8' Libra (the Scales), in the sixth house
Acendant is 3°19' Taurus (the Bull)

Though we may not always admit it, deep down women really want to be treated like goddesses.
You know, pampered, worshipped, praised, etc etc.

Luckily for men, a lot of women are realistic, and know that they shouldn't expect such divine treatment!

Gee, a few people here are a bit sour about Valentine's Day, I guess. Well, at our theater we did a special show for it. We have a 16mm film collector show old movies on the weekends. This past weekend he did a double feature: Dracula (1931) and Nosferatu (1922). This was planned because the original premiere of Dracula was on Valentine's Day. (Maybe I'll scan in some pictures from the show sometime and post them.) Did any other theaters do any special shows or promotions?

For those of you that don't enjoy Valentine's Day, here's a link for you:

Valentine's Day cards as done by The Onion! These are the same ones they show every year. If you are easily offended, don't look at these cards or, in fact, anything else on The Onion's website.

This belongs here with the stories of "Love, Honor and committment".

[Smile]

Surprised Valentine George in Phila.

At the office, where I worked, there was an angel there.
Her hair was long and flowing, and her skin was soft and fair.

I wanted so, to ask her out, but I was way too shy.
I thought she was too beautiful, for me to even try.

A few times I approached her, she just smiled and walked away.
I couldnot get the courage up, and "Hi" was all I'd say.

Then, I had an idea, I would get her home address,
And send a valentine to her, and with it I'd express,

The way I feel about her, and the way she makes me feel,
And the feelings that I have, are very, very real.

I'll tell her, that I dream of her, and how it all would be,
If she would only take the time, to be alone with me.

I poured my heart out in the card, and ask her to be mine,
And then I dropped it in the mail, my special valentine.

In just a few short days, I had a response in my mail,
A card with her return address, I started feeling pale.

I wondered what she said in it, and what she thinks of me,
I guess the only way to know, is open it and see.

With great anticipation, I removed the envelope,
And closed my eyes a moment, as my heart filled up with hope.

I opened up my eyes to see, a card shaped like a heart,
And in the center, someone drew, a bloody piercing dart.

I opened up the card to see, if writing was inside,
And when I started reading it, I damn near almost died.

I'd love to be your valentine, but I think I will pass,
My husband says he'll be at work, to kick your stupid a**.

I'm glad you like my body, and you think it's really fine,
My husband says this card is going, where the sun don't shine.

In your card, you said there's things to me you'd love to do,
I think my husband's going to do, all of those things to you.

So, have a Happy Valentines, I'll see you Monday morn,
My husband says on Tuesday, you'll wish you were never born. [Big Grin]
