i watch alot of movies and tv shows on my computer, and i have been noticing some problems with the sound, more specifically the volume levels.

right now i am watching terminator 2, and the voices are very low and quiet, so i turn up my volume. then an acton scene hits, and since i'm wearing headphones my ears take quite a beating from all those loud explosions.

is there any program i can use which will let me adjust just the center channel? i dont want to be deaf by the time im 25.

Dolby has a feature called "moonlight mode" which compresses the dynamic range of the Dolby Digital soundtrack playback so that dialogue is intelligible and effects aren`t too loud at lower playback settings. "Moonlight" because you can watch movies late at night without disturbing the neighbours. Check under audio settings of your software player. It does not necessarily have to be called "moonlight", but since the Dolby decoder offers various playback dynamics settings, it should be there somehow. If not, use a different playback program. I have Medion Power DVD. It offers the dynamic settings for Dolby playback and a lot of other nice features.
If you like to watch movies with headphones, check out Dolby Headphone. It is a feature which tries to emulate surround sound with headphones.

does medion powerDVD playback divx files, or does it just do DVDs?

i should have specified, the movies and tv shows i watch are not on DVD, they are just divx movies. the players i use right now suck, windows media player and divx player 2.0. there must be a better one out there with some decent audio options other than the volume knob and equalizer.

WinDVD Platinum has several settings you can adjust and change give it a try. PowerDVD does not play divx's, WinDVD didn't either until the release of Platinum.

Maybe it’s due to the limitations of the DivX sound compression and format, and not the player. Also as far as I know, DivX audio is not Dolby encoded (correct me if I’m wrong), which means you can’t just bump up the centre channel volume.

You can encide divx's with ac3 digital codec. You would have to have one fancy player to be able to set individual channel volumes. I don't know of any but I'm sure there are some out there.
